mp3 splitter problem!! help!!

i'm trying to use those softwares to cut my mp3 songs to make them into ringtones. i have tried 2 programs and thy both give me the same error when i try to open my song in the program so i can cut it. they both said the file has the wrong format or something. but my songs are all mp3! and the program i used specifically said its for cutting mp3 songs! has anyone had thjis problem before or am i just doing something wrong??
