BES installed on Windows SBS 2003??

Has anyone installed BES on a Windows Small Biz Server 2003 without any problems?

I'm trying to find the most economical way to run BES express without having to buy another copy of server 2003 and the cals to get this running.

Thanks, and I did search with no results....

Searching the BlackBerry.com knowledge center for "sbs" brings up the following:

http://www.blackberry.com/knowledge...786115&vernum=0

Not exactly SBS 2003, but it is SBS 2000 and maybe a good starting point.

Thanks Zro, here's what I found...

welll.....here's the story....

RIM says they support it, but when you get down to it you're installing a MAPI client on an Exchange server and that is a BIG no no.

Also, BES will run on XP Pro although RIM won't support that...

There you have it...

FWIW, I just ordered a Dell Power Edge 850 with Server 03 R2 and 5 cals for $$980. Not a refeurb but a cancelled order.

My reason for not going ahead and installing it on anything was the cost of a static ip address.(Verizon business dsl $80 a month plus tax) Then when I add the cost of powering a server 24/7(electric bill),for me it's much cheaper to just outsource to Mailstreet or somebody .
I have sbs 2003 (premium)on a dell 2400. It has Exchange,SQL etc. I bought all this stuff when I had "disposable income".But, I havn't installed express although I did download it.

Nice unit, great price.
Add ram and your good to go.The fact that your unit has an O.S. on it is awesome, consider the 5 cal windows Server cost about $900 (or more) alone.
yeah, I also bought from Dell Outlet, I bought a laptop that was "previously ordered", saved me a couple of bucks(about $300).

I just priced out your unit new on dell:
PowerEdge 850

$2,744
From $2,744
Now from
$2,564

Wow! and you got it for $900!

I figure I'll pop another 512 in that and call it good.

Your thoughts on the OS pricing alone is what made me pull the trigger!
Well, that and the fact that I went to the regular Dell site and got similar pricing to what you recieved. I'm actually a Dell reseller, but I know my sales rep couldn't touch this price.

I comb the Outlet for deals all the time! It's a great savings tool for my clients and you can get the non-refurb that still has the warranty.

You can also get Monitors there and if you've purchased a laptop or desktop in the last month or so you can link the refurbed monitor to your computer and get the standard warranty.

I just did that with a 20" wide screen and a Laptop I ordered.

Adding in a bit more here....You shouldn't need an extra static IP for the BES. Nothing external connects to it. All you need is an outbound initiated rule for port 3101. That'll allow your BES to connect to the BB network. Only IP you need is for incoming mail.

As for installing on XP pro....I'm not sure if I'd trust that myself, but I guess if it's possible...

Your other option (if your server hardware is beefy enough) is to install BES in a VM. Not fully supported by BB tech support, but does save on actual hardware costs and you may be able to get them to help you with basics.

This part I had down already.

Well, we tried it, but we had an issue. It was that BES says that it supports SQL express, but that needs .net 2.X, and BES does not currently support .net 2.X, so it broke. No biggie...

A few people have suggested this in other forums, but I really like to separate services on servers. I should get the new server today so it's all good.

Thanks!

Well, I did it, against the recommendations of most resources I've consulted online.

It works well in our environment, even with Exchange running on the SBS 2003 server.

Now I will be googling MAPI client on exchange server to find out why I shouldn't have done this...

You have alot of courage, I'll give you that.
Do you have SBS 2003 Premium or SBS2003 Standard? I think the difference is Premium has more services,SQL,ISA Firewall.

Also what kind of hardware did you put this on?

Every thing that I have read says DON'T....good luck

Aack, I just installed onto SBS2003 Standard and I even had to call RIM for help with one item. I was never told it was a bad idea from them, but I realize that is not their job to do so.

Hopefully, someone can point out the problems and maybe suggest a solution here as I am a rank amateur and it would require lots of learning to get up to speed.
