PPC-6700 Contacts Issue

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a client that is using a Sprint PPC-6700. He is also using Outlook with the Outlook Connector to connect to his MSN email address and share his contacts. He has had some strange issues with duplicate contacts and calendar appointments in the past but now for some reason ActiveSync is only seeing 450 of his 650 contacts. If I create a new contact ActiveSync picks it up and Sync's it.

I have upgraded to the newest firmware available from the UT Starcom site but it doesn't seem to do any good. Does anyone else have any issues like this? I think it is related to using the Outlook Connector with his MSN address.

Would moving to Exchange fix these issues?

Check to see if some categories are being excluded. Is there a commonality in the unlisted contacts?

He didn't set up any categories. I couldn't find anything in common with the contacts.

Although I am not aware of any hard limit, I do know that having 300+ contacts will noticeably increase the ring time on the 6700 as it has to look for number matches before it plays the ring tone.

I believe ActiveSync tags contacts when they are synced, maybe there is a conflict between the ActiveSync flags and Outlook Connector.

Are the "missing" contacts on the PPC or the PC?

Some things to try;

The missing contacts are on the PPC. I have done a hard reset, reset teh AS Profile and reinstalled but none of tese options worked.

Well I got him setup with Exchange but when I try and copy the contacts from a PST file it doesn't work properly. The display names on most of the contacts get lost and they don't sync properly to the PPC-6700.

I also tried moving the contacts and calendar to a PST and syncing without the connector. He still seemed to miss about 110 contacts (same contacts as before).

At this point i am lost. I have never seen issues like this.

If i re create the contacts that are not syncing they show up. I don't understand why.

This is a problem with the 'conversion' that Activesync does to the Contacts when it 'copies' them to the Pocket Outlook. Somewhere in one of the Contacts is an illegal character causing the contacts on his pst that follow that one contact to be ignored. I think the conversion program is seeing it as a EOF (end of file) tag. Sorry but I can't tell you how to find it other than to keep recreating the missing Contacts.
Possibly you could:
1. 'export' all of his Contacts form Outlook on his PC
2. Delete all the Contacts in Outlook and resync
3. Then re-import them one at Alpha letter at a time until they stop sync'ing this will 'tell' you which letter group of the Contact list has the bad character.

Another way might be to Export them to a CSV, Access, or Excel file and examine the entire list to see if you can find the 'bad' character.

Are the contacts store in a sub-folder of the contact list in Outlook? I've seen cases where those contacts were ignored by Active-Synch.
