Hey guys I'm using bitpim 0.8.08 and once i sent over ringotnes to my cell it no longer restarts it!!...any ideas!!

and I can no longer hear any of my ringtones...even the stock ones!!!

If you used the get/send data tabs in bitpim then it will erase the data for your ringtones on a 9800. the only way i have found to send ringtones is through the filesystem. goto the verizon/lg forum and read the 9800 noob sticky on the top and that will instruct you on how to upload ringtones without losing the data.

you might want to goto the dload folder in the filesystem and delete the 2 ringtone .dat files before you retransfer all the ringtones and reboot. this might recover them in your ringer menu on the phone so you can hear them.

your ringtones hav to be .mp3 .. u probably hav midi ringtones... thats wut happend to mine..

try using the newest bitpim 9.05. it allowed me to put ringers on my mem card and keep using them after rebooting!!!!

jady... what version is your phone firmware?

Posted by: jady

I have v5........

Posted by: seVer916

makes a diff. I have v2 and the bitpim 9.05, but my ringtones no longer play after rebooting the phone. they still show on the list as being available, but I have to reload in bitpim before I can do anything with them..

I have version 1 can I go to verizon and have them flash my phone to V5?

rename your mp3s and make sure the file names are small.

Can you put ringtones on your 9800 WITHOUT a data cable??

Posted by: mkfan49

yes but u need then u need the bluetooth adapter which is a whole lot faster

flomaster DO NOT UPGRADE TO VER 5 because you will lose the ability to do the ringtones hack stay with ver 1

aiite my first 9800 fried this past weekend and i obtained another one. apparently it's the new one called the 9800 M? i believe my phone is a v5 as well. i tried using the current bitpim and towards the end of writing to the phone i get an error. can anyone help? or is it a lost cause till bitpim releases a new version? btw im using a data cable for this.

Posted by: mkfan49

you cannot due the ringtone hack unless you have version 1/1.1/2

Posted by: jady

The 9800M is just a 9800 with v5 software. The ringtone on sd card hack is do-able using bitpim 9.05. follow the instructions in the how to's for the 9800 in the bitpim help file.

hmmm i added a ringtone with the v5 software. took me awhile though.... not sure how i did it either haha!

With the vx9800 and v5 software:

To keep your mp3 ringers after a reboot, just do the "send phone data" step of the 9800 BitPim hack twice in a row each time you add ringers. The (N-1) write to the ringtone.dat file gets pushed into the phone's backup copy and becomes the version that gets restored when you reboot the phone.

You can then restart the phone as much as you want and each time the correct backup version gets used.

I haven't tried that, but I've done another way that seems to work for me... first, I have v2 of the firmware, and I have my mp3 ringers on a SD card. what I do is remove the card, open and close the flip (so it resets all the pics and whatnot), then turn off the phone. put the card back in and then turn the phone on.

it seems to work just fine for me, but I haven't yet tried highqueue's method.

that method works for the v2 firmware THANKS!!! but i just want to know how to delete the ringers if you dont want them anymore? do you just delete from your phone? or do you have to delete the back-up file that it creates too?

Posted by: seVer916

not really sure, actually. I had the same ringtones on my card for I don't know how long. hehe I ended up just deleting them all and putting a few select songs on the phone itself so I didn't have to deal with the workarounds.

ringers on the phone in the phones internal memory can be deleted at the phone, in fact that is the best way to do it

i've never used the ringers on the card hack. so i can't be sure about deleteing them

You can either delete them from your phone's menu, or delete them from the mini SD card itself. Remember that the mp3 ringtones get mapped by their physical memory address on the card itself in the ringtones.dat file; meaning that if you delete a ringer and then re-copy it to the card, you must repeat the BitPim hack again (with the "send phone data" step done twice back to back) in order to tell the ringtone.dat file to associate that memory address with the filename. Also, if you change ringers (i.e. any that you add/delete between hacks) your association in your phone book may be changed to the incorrect ringer (because they are seen as memory addresses and not file names); i.e. if you delete a ringer, and then copy a new one to the card, the new one may replace the old one's empty memory address and your phone book association will pick up whatever is in that address regardless of the file name.
