LG CU500, no email client solution.......

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: bkw13

Just to inform those who don't know. A lot of people were disappointed, as was I, in the fact that the LG CU500 is missing an email client. The good news is that there is "Flurry Mail". It is a free email client that can be set up on a cpu, and then downloaded quickly to your phone, and it's absolutely free! www.flurrymail.com I've been using it for a couple of days now, and it works great. There is another email client service on the internet, that I do not have a lot of info about yet, and it may not be available yet, but its called OZ Mobile Email Client. http://www.oz.com/emailpsclient.html

For now, FlurryMail has been great.

yeh, flurry mail was mentioned like a 100 times in the official cu500 thread, thanks.

Yeah, since u already know about it, this post wasn't for you. I made this because I saw that people still wanted to know about it. Thanks for your useless reply to me though.

Most of Cingular's new phones come with the OZ Mobile Email Client. I'm surprised the LG phone does not. Perhaps it can be downloaded from MediaNet?

OP: Yeah I think I actually did the first post about Flurry Mail for the CU500 thread.

Also who is the one wanting referrals for flurrymail to get a free SLVR. Why would we give one person a referral point, what's so special about that guy.

No, it won't let you. And I tried loading the .jad and .jar for the RAZR version, and it installs and runs, but causes the screen on my CU500 to flash really quickly and then it stays dim after I exit untill I turn the phone off and back on.

On phone:

1. Media Net homepage.
2. Go down to the "Check your Email" link

After that,

3.Go all the way down to "Add Email Account" from there click "Add Email Provider"

I was able to download Mobile Email to my cu500. So far it's working just fine. Only problem is it will only work with certain emails. Like msn, yahoo, etc.

I iwsh here was an e-mail client that worked with attachents.

I also wish this, but haven't found one yet.

Posted by: ScruffyGuy

I'm not to impressed by this program. It seems to take a bit longer to actually check to see if you have mail vs when the mail is actually in your account and you can't do attachments or click on links to take you to a web page or even copy them.

I haven't been able to check this out yet, but a gentleman who used to work for Cingular and who has a LG CU500 told me that by going to Cingular's MediaNet on your CU500 you can download the email client which will work on CU500 or Razr(s).

Yes that is true, but it only works for Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, AIM, and AT&T Yahoo.

It doesn't give you the chance to set up your own POP3 email on it. So unless you have one of the above emails, you are out of luck.

What they should have done is put an "Other" option in there so you can program in your own. But then again Cingular is not known for doing things that make sense.

flurry mail works with attachments. at least pics

Posted by: damba98

Don't the following instructions permit POP3 configuration?
https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB39425.html

I am curious if it works on that phone. One would think if you knew the Earthlink, Roadrunner (etc. server settings you could get it to work via medianet. Or is the real issue lack of full functionality (e.g. no attachments)?

best,
P

I am not sure. The link you gave doesn't show a place to enter the SMTP setting. I did determine that it will work with the old "sbcglobal" settings in place of ATT which is on their list, but not sure about others.

I decided - for other reasons - to go with RAZR vs CU500, although I live in a "hotspot" for the new high speed service that CU500 does so well with. I don't plan to use the internet access very much other than email.

Just try entering that new info where it says 'Server'. Odds are it will be the same for incoming and outgoing mail w/ your ISP. Or perhaps the tutorial screens are incomplete and there's an additional screen grab missing which mentions it(?)

Let me know if it works.

If you're asking if anyone has used flurry to get gmail, then the answer is yes. I have flurry on my phone and it gets gmail just fine.

I access my Gmail account via the Opera mini browser on the CU500. This works very well for me. What are the advantages of Flurry? Does it push e-mail to the phone real-time.

Best real-time/push (quasi)solution I've been able to come up with is to forward my e-mails to the phone as text messages, so that I know I have gotten an e-mail, and I can read the From: field and the first few characters of the e-mail.

Then I can fire-up the opera/gmail combo if I need to read the whole message. I've had the "poor mans blackberry" setup this way for several years... even with older phones and yahoo's wap client.

Thanks in advance...

Great solution. I've never thought of that. On the lighter side. I could have sworn that I read something about Cingular coming out with an app that lets you read gmail. I can't seem to find it, but I am sure I read about it.

I believe you might be talking about the new app from google. It lets you read gmail from your phone. It really works well.

If you log into the Media net site from a computer, you can set up pop3 and imap accounts.

Thanks Scruffyguy, and Stepchild!

I downloaded the Gmail Java app yesterday. Very cool. Attachments, pictures, everything. The install recognizes the CU500. I couldn't be happier. Download it at

http://gmail.com/app

I still forward my e-mail to SMS for immediate notification, then go to the java app to read the entire message or to reply...

Short of an HSDPA, flip style crackberry, this is the perfect e-mail setup for me.

How do you do this?

Posted by: only1chip

in gmail setup, create a rule to forward e-mail. I have several spam filters first, then the forward rule. With cingular, your e-mail address for sms should be 1234567890@mobile.mycingular.net - where 123... is your phone number.

piece 'o cake

Does it cost any more then a text msg to use this service?

Posted by: only1chip

No, standard text message charges apply.

Thanks for your response.

The reason I was asking is when I starting using it, OLAM, said I had changed my rate plan. OLAM wouldn't show me my data/msg usage. It said I had changed my rate plan and it wouldn't show data/msg until next billing start. I called CS and they said everything look fine and couldn't answer why it wouldn't show usage. Forgot to ask them if there was an additional charge.
