Cingular: text or data choice

Hello forum citizens.
I've read some of the threads on the subject, and am wondering if anyone else has heard of such an experience.
About a week ago, I mysteriously stopped getting (and apparently sending) text messages. Some others here had the same problem, but mine has a bit of a twist.
Eventually I called in to tech and, after about an hour, was given a new media center number to put in the text messaging options.
I believe my previous number was +13123149870, and now I have been given +12099042030. Text messages were working again... however now my medianet logins are flatly rejected as opposed to the lame timeout that I would usually get about half the time when I attempt to use it.
So, here is what I'm thinking and have come here for your input: Apparently data usage is approved by the media center number that I have entered as text messages work and now my data settings produce a fast failure. Do I have to try the other media center numbers until I find a combination that does both of the things that I pay cingular plenty of cash to do that they have broken for me sometime last week?
I've found three other numbers besides the new one, but I feel that I have been deliberately mislead as I believe my assumptions to be correct.
Is Cingular crippling their customers in order not to provide the service we are paying for?

Oh. Perhaps this is related to the upgrade thread and they just don't tell anyone about it.
I noticed this specifically as I am currently traveling on business.
