Should I get a PPC?

Hello.
I'm looking to get a new phone to replace my sister's old Nokia 3100
. Anyhow, I'm not much of a phone power user as you guessed, I usually just make phone calls / txt messages, mainly because I've never owned a phone that supports anything else. I'm going to be a junior in college, and this summer I finally have a job that pays well, so I'm looking to get a nice phone.
I am going to be studying abroad in London starting in January through next June, so I'm looking to get a phone that I will be using abroad as well as here. Originally I was looking at just getting one of the new Cingular phones such as the V3i, 6126, or CU500. However, now that I've discovered that many of the new PPCs that are coming out, such as the TyTN, support Wifi, I'm wondering if I might be better off getting one of these. That way, I could call home from London for cheap / free using services such as Skype. Also my gf is studying abroad in Madrid at the sametime, so if I get skype setup for her, I'll be able to talk easily with her as well.
Moreover, I'm a .Net programmer, so I'd like the oppurtunity to mess around writing apps for Windows Mobile!
Anyways, has anyone had any experiece using their PPCs with Skype? Should I consider this route, or would more people recommend I just stick to a regular phone and try to get a decent rate in London?
I'm currently stuck with this 3100, which sucks, but I'm willing to wait to upgrade until something such as the TyTN is released.
If anyone has opinions or suggestions, I'd appreciate them.
Thanks.
