Text Messaging and PDA Connect

Hello All,

I was a former AT&T Wireless subscriber, and just recently migrated to Cingular with an 8125.

On AT&T, I had unlimited text messaging (incoming and outgoing). I had daily alerts for news and weather text'd to me. I also have an text message alert sent to my phone from MSN and Yahoo the minute I receive any new e-mail.

Now that I'm on Cingular, I have the Unlimited PDA Connect Plan. I have a feeling that I'm going to be charged for all these text messages.

Does anyone know of a way to get alerted of new e-mail without using test messaging (or SMS)?

Is there a workaround or alternative to way to send and received text messages without using SMS?

Is there a way to have WM5 automatically check for e-mail every so often...like every hour or so...and then show a notification if one is received?

That's correct. SMS isn't included in PDA Connect.

You can configure the mail application to check for new mail every X minutes. It'll play a short notification whenever it finds new mail.

I have mine set to check every 5 minutes, and it works pretty well.

You can purchase an additional text messaging plan to add to your account. This will help reduce the cost of text messaging. That's my suggestion in addition to trying to switch whatever services you can from text messaging over to using data instead.
I have text messages sent for new Yahoo Mail, but I do so with filters and only for very specific message criteria (like I want to know when a certain person sends me mail.) Otherwise I have my mail check once an hour (or however frequent you find is best.)

Use the web browser to access weather and news and anything you'd normally get sent via SMS
Here are the mobile URLs for Yahoo and MSN to get started:
http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/ (Yahoo Mobile Site)
http://mobile.msn.com/pocketpc (MSN mobile)
http://vzw.msn.com/pocketpc (better version of MSN Mobile)
http://mobile.wunderground.com/ (Weather)
http://www.accuweather.com/pda/ (Weather)
http://www.google.com/xhtml (Google Mobile)

Some people with the 8125 dumped the PDA connect plan and got Media Max 1000 instead. It's unlimited data and 1000 messages for $30.
But while that plan will work fine on the 8125, that plan is not sold for a PDA, so you should be aware of the risks and what you're getting in to before considering it.
I have Media Max 1000 on a Treo 650 (which the same applies, normally takes the PDA plan).
This suggestion and topic is very controversial and sometimes results in heated discussions (just FYI.) Do a little searching, you'll find a lot on the subject. You can PM me as well.

Are you talking about configuring the mail application on the PocketPC?
I know about this setting in MS Outlook, but I can't seem to find this setting on my Cingular 8125.

If you set the Messaging application in your 8125 up as POP3 or IMAP instead of just syncing your mail with Outlook, go to Options and tap the Advanced button.

Then check "Connect and check for messages every: __ minute(s)." and select the number of minutes.
