Tethering with LG CU500 and a Widcomm Bluetooth stack

If you want to use all the bluetooth features that this phone provides you'll have to end using the Widcomm bluetooth stack. Microsoft Windows XP sp2 bt stack is very lacking and will only let you use the dialup networking.

On my first try with MS stack tethering worked just fine, I'm getting around 500kbps downloads/ 128kbps uploads. However it didnt work right off when I switched to the Widcomm BT stack.

To make it work make sure you disable the following. The Widcomm software will install a dialup connection in your computer on pairing with your phone if you select it. Go to the properties of the connection and click on 'Networking'. Click on Settings if PPP is selected, and then make sure all software compression and LCP extensions are turned off. For some reason the LG CU500 doesnt like these. Once you do that, type the regular username and password in the dialup connection ( WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM / CINGULAR1 ) with phone number *99# and you should be set to go.

This phone works great and flawlessly tethering. Tried Skype over it and works fantastically well. I even try to call my cellphone with Skype using the same cellphone as the modem.. the result? My phone rang, I picked up the call, and everything worked simultaneously. Beautiful!

Good Luck with your tethering.

Hi, could you help a humble salesman out? Would greatly appreciate it.

What's the functional difference between the widcomm bluetooth and the microsoft bluetooth. You seem to clearly prefer the widcomm and, from your opening post above, I really can't figure out specifically why you seem to prefer the widcomm over the microsoft bluetooth.

Could you please enlighten me? Thank you.

PS I guess, in re-reading your post, I figured out that apparently only DUN works on the microsoft bluetooth? Is that true? only that one limited type of bluetooth works on microsoft, *only* DUN? Apparently, on the widcom, "everything" else works, everything being other things like headset bluetooth and "other" bluetooth functions. What are the other available bluetooth type of functions, above and beyond headsets and DUN? tia

MS BT stack works fine with my CU500 and I much prefer it over the Widcomm stack.

I am able to use all my CU500's BT functions with the MS stack as well. It is not limited to DUN.

When you've tethered your cu500 to your laptop, I've heard that the DUN internet connection disconnects every few minutes. Is this true, and is there any way to overcome this? tia

Can you use file transfers with the MS BT stack too?

I don't have that problem. I've been connected for hours with the CU500 and never dropped a single time. Speeds are really good too, feels slightly slower than regular DSL while browsing but everything comes up pretty fast.

I haven't had anything like that happen.

I'm sorry, as I am new to this high tech thingy. Were I live, high speed internet is not available (DSL or cable) and I have given up on dial up (too slow). Now with the CU500, I am able to get service in my house. Does thethering mean I can use my phone as a source of high speed connectivity? If so, what would I need to accomplish this? If this is something that should be done over PM or email, I understand but would still like some help. Thanks,

Kyle

bartolo5/All,
I have read through many posts here but am still having a tethering problem. Using widcomm (1.4.2), I cannot find dial-up as an available service. All I have as available are Audio Gateway, LG sync SPP, OBEX file transfer, and OBEX object Push. This list is generated by the phone upon pairing correct? In the stack when I "view my BT services", I get 9 available. But when I "discover services" for the device, I only get those 4. I have tried everything I can think of. I am using a older ambicom usb fob, but drivers are new. Running XP pro w/SP2.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sorry, I got it working! After thinking through it, it just had to be a phone setting. Sure enough, had to change connection setting in phone from USB to bluetooth. It appears though that I have to do this every time I toggle on BT. Should I just leave BT on all the time? How much extra battery drain is there? I don't use my BT headset at all, so tethering is all I'll use BT for.

I use a Kensington BT 2.0 USB adapter and it worked first time go today. It stays connected and I only use windows DUN, now that it is paired.

I bought the lg cu500 hoping to use it to connect by palm tx to the net as well as run my hp notebook in the car and get on the net.... for some reason the tx does not sign on it just hangs and now Iam wondering what I will run into with the notebook.... any thoughts?

Guys.. If you use the Cingular Communications Manager with the Tethering Process it works beautifully. I was unable to connect to the service using the DUN settings manually. But tethering worked great.

I continually get an error 619 when I try to connect. I have searched here and the internet and have not been able to resolve this error. If anyone has overcome this please help me out. Much appreciated

Does this phone support multiple BT connections at the same time, i.e. BT headset and BT connection to computer at the same time?

Thanks,
Z
