HOW TO: Have separate ringer IDs for calls and sms!

I was sure that this had been discovered already, but since I can't seem to find it, perhaps others can't as well.

We all know the curse of Moto's combined ringer ID, but here's the workaround:

Anybody who's seen some n00b questions knows about seem 0032 offset 3E bit 4, which controls whether incoming calls find the best or the exact match for caller ID. Normally, n00bs are instructed to turn off this bit to make their caller ID work.

This offset, as it turns out, also enables the phone to distinguish between calls and sms, if you'd like. All my tests have consistently shown that the exact ID of an incoming call is formatted 1-206-123-4567, but the exact ID of an sms is +12061234567.

The solution: set all your phonebook entries in the 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX format, and turn on 0032_0001:3E:4. Received calls will play the ringer out of the phonebook, and text messages will play your default sms sound. This method has been tested.

I have not yet tested creating duplicate phonebook entries in the +1XXXXXXXXXX format to give messages ID names (instead of just the number). If somebody else does, please share.

This works for me, at least. I'm interested if it does for you. I am:
RAZR V3, BL 7D0, SW 42.10R, T-Mobile.

wow nice find!! sososososopro

That's pretty cool but seems like a lot of work to have separate ringers. I would like to know who's sending me a message without having to duplicate my whole phonebook.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! GREAT post.

Hurumph.

Didn't work for me on my V3x.

Doesn't seem to work on my V635. 93R. Cingular.

What I've noticed in the past (before this mod, ie, the bit is off) is that every so often, an incoming SMS will play the general SMS sound and not the one assigned to the phonebook entry. But it'll play the assigned sound on the next SMS from that party.

I can confirm that this does work but like he said all the text messages will appear with just the number caller ID, not the person's name. And creating duplicate entries to have the name appear instead of the number does NOT work.

given the seem you have to edit, i'm assuming that u guys have GSM phones...is there anyway to get this to work on a CDMA motorola?

This WILL NOT work if you have dobson cellular one. All of their numbers consist of +1330-550-1111 and if you try to alter it, distinct ringers won't work at all...That's what my research and studies have concluded and a cellular one rep validated it. If someone with dobson can prove me wrong, I'd love to have a seperate ring for sms...regardless of who's name is on it when they call.

Edit: this is for customers sending and receiving calls and texts from dobson users, not implying other carriers.

but what about Verizon or Alltel phones?

I have no clue what I'm doing here! Can someone explain how to do the seem, or give me a link to the steps to do the seem? Thanks

Well no luck on my KRZR K1 even though the SEEM edit behaves exactly as described.

Modifying bit 4 caused the matching of incoming numbers to phonebook entries to be either; more strict (b4=1), or less strict (b4=0).
I proved this conclusively by adding or removing the area codes from the contact:
- when strict: no area code = incoming call not matched
- when not strict: no area code = incoming call matched

Unfortunately, it didn't help the ringer ID problem because that relies on the claim that incoming SMS's will be always received in international format (+1xxxyyyzzzz) and so, with strict matching, will not match a phonebook entry without the "+1". That wasn't the case in my tests - at least for messages sent from a Verizon phone. Basically with strict matching and contact #'s of the form "1-xxx-yyy-zzzz", both calls and msgs were matched.

Perhaps the incoming SMS number format is dependant on the originating service provider so only some contacts will be helped by this? Perhaps MY provider (T-Mobile) strips the international code if superfluous?

Damn!!
I've now spent 8 hours reading half a dozen forums and SEEMing and re-SEEMing this phone and ringer ID's are still worthless!

Has anyone had success with a KRZR K1 - especially on an unbranded K1 like mine?

It wont work for them.

The 2742 seem on CDMA phones most closely resembles the 0032 seem on GSM phones... that being say.. while a couple of the offset/bit combos are similar, most don't control the same things.

On the Alltel V3C, seem 2742, offset 3E, bit 4 is already "on"... turning if off, has no impact.

On the KRZR K1 all you have to do is add the ringer ID to the contact info. The contact has to be save to the phone for this to work. You require no seem edits

Hi Ashhabib

I did that first, and my contacts are saved on phone (not SIM), but it just doesn't work for my K1. Hence I got into hours of SEEM nonsense.
IF it works for you, it's probably a S/W or FLEX difference. I'm using an unbranded phone. My wife has a K1m with Verizon FLEX and it does not have this problem.

Would you mind telling me what FLEX and S/W you're getting success with?

My version info:
FLEX: GSTCNRYDST01NA102 - 1.0.1.2.3.2.8.4e.0.0.0.0.1.0.0.0.6.3.18.1b.0.2u.4. 2.e
S/W: R4527_G_08.42.0BR_A

Posted by: ashhabib

My Flex: GSTCNRYRGR01NA10D
SW: R4527_G_08.42.0ER

Also, you have caller ID right? Because that is required for personal ringtunes to work

Yes Caller ID on - ringer ID's work fine, I just don't want them for messages and VM also.

Looks like your S/W is very close to mine, you just have some provider's FLEX. I guess that means something in the FLEX interface that configures the SW for each provider CAN remove this "feature". I Hope that I can find a way to do it with my unbranded FLEX someday!
