LG CU500 BUGS and Crippled abilities info ONLY!!!!!
Please no questions about functions un-related to the thread and no questions about locations to buy please....

Anyone with this phone have any luck just simply downloading ANY file that this phone is supposed to support, like images or mp3's or video in 3gp or mp4 format? Everytime I try to from any webpage it says unsupported format. I'm talking about from the phone's internal browser. Even with opera it cannot access the device as a storage drive or even the tflash/sdmicro storage through java. Somebody besides me must be able to confirm or deny this bug... also from a snapserver I have been seeing the browser crash and the phone will directly to white screen with cingular logo like when the phone starts up... randomly the phone will also shut down completely when this happens.... No one else?

Wirelessly posted (whatever the next lines says: LG-CU500 Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

I can download mp3 and 3 gp files no problem

Posted by: mook2420

do you use the internal browser? just select the file and does the browser open them or save them in phone memory or on the card? btw are you using the LG CU500? may be a silly question but that's the phone that these issue is about... seemingly only on my part...

It says above his post he actually used his CU500 to make it.

I don't know if this is a bug or what, but when I connect my wired headset the phone automatically dials the last number, whether it was a recieved call or an outgoing call. This also happens when I try to play MP3s through my trucks stereo. I have to end the call before I can play music.
Anyone else have this happen? I have also had a few failed connections when i try to connect to media net, a reboot seems to fix it though.

You're wired headset isn't the proper type of headset to use with the 2.5mm headphone jack on the CU500. You need headphones that have 3 rings around the plug (that part that actually inserts into the headphone jack).

I don't know if all 2.5mm headphones with 3 rings on the plug will work or not for sure. There may be variation amongst them.

I tried multiple adaptors so I could use my 3.5mm headphones with the 2.5mm headphone jack on the CU500, but all the initial ones I tried had only 2 rings around the plug and none of them would work right with the phone and they did the redialing of the last phone number as you mentioned in your post.

If you look through the thread "LG CU500 (released)" you'll see some discussion about this topic (although that thread is pretty long now).

I found a headphone adaptor at the Verizon booth in a local Circuit City that finally worked with the CU500, FYI.

HTH.

Thanks for the reply. I knew it was the wrong adapter, but I didn't think that it would cause the redial problem. I have not been able to find one of those adapters anywhere. I also have an LG8100, and had the same issue with the 3 ringed adapter. I have a 3 ringed headset, and it works great, but I want to be able to use the phone with my vehicles stereo. Thanks for the Circuit City tip, I called the Verizon kiosk, but they didn't have one. I am seriously running out of options here. I may return this phone. I appreciate your help though.

NP. Sorry your local CC store didn't have one.

If you're interested, here's info on the adapter I got from my CC. Dunno if you'll want this kind or not, as it's got a microphone and answer/end call button on it.

It's just called a "Stereo Adapter" on the box. Box is red, grey and black in color. It cost $14.99. I don't see anything called a "part number" on it, but it has this number on the receipt item description:

SHS25-35MMCAE HFA: UNV2.55MM

Good luck!

Ok so my browser was crashing when trying to download files of an ordinary sort so I figured this was why I was getting the "unsupported content" error message when trying to DL mp3's or 3gp's so I took the phone to the POS and they gave me a new one. So I have a new one but no crashing with browser, just no DL'ing of mp3's or 3gp's. WTH is wrong with me and or my phone, I dare ask? Perhaps it is a bitrate that it doesn't support.... or something. Filesize is seemingly small enough because I'm pretty sure that the internal browser saves to the phones mem and you have to move it to other storage through the file menu. But why oh why, this is a HUGE dealbreaker for me with this phone if I can't even DL with the super fast speed files that the phone is supposed to support... I can transfer the same files thru BT and they play. Just can't use the browser? Crap. Can someone confirm pleeeeeze:

A) They can download videos and music and images with the LG CU500 in either Opera or Internal Browser

B) Where does it save them if so...

C) What is the variable I'm missing be it filesize or bitrate or whatever...

Here is a file if i can get it to show up. I made the ringer, it's funny, used licensed sound effects from work so it's legal to download. Thanks

Is anybody able to use the PIN Code Request (asks for SIM PIN upon startup) without having the phone display "Invalid Smartchip" after power cycling the phone???

Posted by: mook2420

A couple of times I had to adjust my smartchip inside the phone because I'd insert it and the phone wouldn't recognize it if it wasn't exactly seated... perhaps that could be it?

Is anyone else having troubles with their phone not recognizing when a key is pressed? When using T9 in any application my phone constantly misses letters no matter how slow or fast I type it in. it is almost always different keys but the ones it misses most frequently is the 8 key (tuv), 9 (wxyz), 5 (jkl) and 6 (mno). This is getting very aggrivating and I am worndering if I need to try to exchange this or if it is a bug that maybe LG needs to try to fix. I appologize in advance if this is too trivial for this thread.

Thanks.

The phone does not handle AAC files properly. When you transfer an MP3 to the phone, it recognizes it as a music file and you can play it directly from the Music Player. However, for AAC files it doesn't do that. You can only play the file if you go into "My Stuff" and select the file to play it. You also can't close the phone while it's playing.

Is it only me or this phone doesn't support DTMF? I have "Send DTMF tones" enabled in settings->call menu, but it doesn't seem to work... i.e. "p" doesn't pause. Anyone else has this problem?

It works for me, the pause is done with a capital P. In the menu there is a 'insert pause' option, and also you can get there by pressing * multiple times.

Some have complained about the LG 550 on Sprint do that as well. Also, when trying to insert a symbol with the '1' key in T9 mode, the phone will post a bunch of scrambled characters such as "000$%#$%". Weird...

I'm using a MP3 for my ringtone with no problems. I never use a full song though since Cingular phones only ring for 30 seconds max. I cut out a 30 second clip from whatever MP3 I wanna use with Audacity and use that for the ringtone.

Others have posted they're using MP3s as ringtones as well, so not sure why yours isn't working (unless you're somehow still exceeding the 600k file size).

I've tried using a small one that was about 100kb and it didnt work either. What bit rate are yours at?

The only one I've used on this phone so far is at 128k bit rate. File size is aprox 482K and it's in the MP3 format.

Ah, good find, Grue.

I'll hafta swing by the corp store here and see if they have the same thing. The adapter I picked up at C.City has a microphone/answer/end call button built into it and I don't really want that when I'm using my wired earbuds, so for $5 I may pick this up.

Thanks for the info.

I found an adapter at Target last night, but I couldn't justify spending $15 for it. I'll just wait patientely for my HT820's to come.

My call history only shows numbers no names. Is this normal for this phone?

Posted by: calh22a

I have noticed a couple issues with my phone after fiddling with it for 2 days.
1. When I have the phone flipped open and I slightly shake it fowards and backwards, I can feel the top part slightly shifting front and back. It's not visibly moving, but I can feel as if it's moving slightly. Perhaps its the spring/hinge? Anyone else have that?
2. When I'm listening to voicemails, it seems as if the voice gets quieter and then louder. The volume basically fluctuates up and down. I haven't really noticed that for regular phone calls. Anyone else experience this?
Hopefully no more things to complain about as I play with t his phone more.

Yes, to both of your comments, calh22a. The top half of my phone does exactly what u describe. I can deal with it the way it is now, but I hope it doesn't get worse over time.

I was going to post and ask about the fluctuating volume during calls to see if anyone else has experienced this. I've experienced this during phone calls, not with voicemails though.

I just turned of the half-rate AMR and I *think* that has helped with the situation, but I need to use the phone more and see if that's correct or just me imagining things.

Mine doesn't do that. It shows the contact names in the call history. (Unless, of course, it's a phone call from/to a person I don't have stored in my contacts. In that case it just shows the phone number).

The slight movement of the flipped part is not bothering me too much either. The fluctuation of the volume is also not that bad, since its not that noticeable, but I would like to resolve this issue.
I'm not very knowledgeable about phones...could you please explain what AMR is?
I wonder if these issues are common among the Cu500. Anyone having these problems?

Does anyone know how to organize the songs in the music player in alphabetical order. When I hit the music button and select music player and all songs, I get a list of all my songs, but their not in alpabetical order. They're listed by the order they were added. Thanks for any help or info.

The problem is not with your phone, it is with the place you have the file hosted. I copied your ringtone to my own webspace and it downloads just fine with my CU500's browser, whereas it didn't work when I tried directly from your link.

Would you rather go deaf from it blasting at full volume in your ear if you are holding it up there while it rings? Say the call drops and you don't notice and the person calls you back while you are holding the phone still up to your ear. If it rang full blast and you suffered hearing damage, you could sue LG. It's to cover their butts and to protect your hearing.

Just set your line to ring for longer if it's that big of a problem. My phone rings for a full 30 seconds before it goes to voice mail.

How do you do that?

Also, thevoicemail icon wont go away no matter what I do.

I would also like to find a way to make text smaller when browsing the web.

I gotta side with davesz on this particular "feature". I think it's stupid.

If they're gonna implement something like this then they should make it optional/configurable, so the user can choose to enable/disable it.

I'm sure some people like it, but I'm one of the ones who doesn't and I wish I had a way to disable it and make it ring "full blast" right from the start.

Life goes on though...

why would you have it set to full blast? I have to set all my stuff down to 5 cause on 7 it's too lioud and the speaker itself isn't even able to support music on 7 either. Where do I change it to ring 30 seconds?

I shoulda phrased that better. When I said "full blast" I just meant that I'd have the phone ring at whatever level it's currently set to, and not start off ringing at a lower volume.

I don't like the phone ringing softer and then getting louder as time goes on with an incoming call 'cuz I often set my phone on my kitchen counter when I get home and will be elsewhere in the house. With incoming calls starting off at a softer volume level, I may not hear the phone and be able to reach it in time before voicemail kicks in.

As for making your phone ring for 30 seconds, you hafta call Cingular CS and have them set that for you. There's no way to do it yourself.

Incorrect. You can do it yourself, the codes are in the Cingular FAQ section.

I don't care for it myself, but you have to look at things like this from the manufacturers point of view. If they put an option to disable it, someone could do just that and then still be able to sue them if the lound ringer damaged their hearing. It's all about protecting their own assets.

Ah, cool. I never noticed it in there. My bad.

Thanks for the correction, jbzcar.

Edit: Hmmm...Is there a problem with the Cingy FAQ at the moment? I actually just went to look for the ring-for-30-seconds-before-voicemail code and it's currently not showing up in the FAQ.

Only way I could find it was by searching google and pulling up their cached version of the page.

Unless I'm blind, I don't currently see it in the Cingular FAQ at the moment.

I'm not sure that's why they're doing it though. Do you know for a fact that that is their reasoning behind implementing this feature? Have you read something that indicates this?

I don't believe the majority of phone manufacturers (for U.S. models anyway) are doing this, so it seems like if fear of lawsuits were the culprit for this feature that all the others/a majority of them would be doing the same.

The reason most other phones don't do this is because the ringer speaker is not located in the same place as the earpiece.

I have no written proof of this as the reason why, but if you think about it even a little, it makes a LOT of sense. And actually, now that I think about it, on some phones before, I have seen a disclaimer about loud ringing damaging hearing.

This phone had enough weird things going on with the 2 ones i had experience with in the baltimore washington area 3g so i returned both and paid the same day for an unlocked unbranded w810 from the sony style store and even have a 2 year store fix or replace. 3g was not for me with that wacky lg phone. rather have full happy java ability with opera running smooth and the ability to move files.

I tried to download your ringtone with the phone, but got 'unsupported format' I was able to get to the page, click on the link and -boom- unsupported format msg. I downloaded the ringtone on the PC without a problem , and you did a great job - sounds great and is funny!

I have no written proof of this as the reason why, but if you think about it even a little, it makes a LOT of sense. And actually, now that I think about it, on some phones before, I have seen a disclaimer about loud ringing damaging hearing.

I cant find it either

When my CU500 rang for the first time, I thought I set it wong, then I realized that the lower volume was on purpose - and to me it made sense, as on of the most annoying things to hear is someone's cellphone going off in a movie, or in a resturant, or even at work - for whatever reason, people think they need to have the ringer loud, How many times have you seen someone jump as a reaction to the loud ringer? sometmes they are jumping to turn it off, sometimes they jump because of the cheer loudness. Also remember the Ipod lawsuit that forced apple to change its ipod firmware to limit the db's of loudness on the ipod. I think several European countries were threating to have Ipods pulled from sale if Apple didn't place limits on the volume - and isn't LG's base in Europe ? I think this feature is overall a good one.

I think it's an interesting idea, but I still wish it was optional and ultimately left up to the user to activate/de-activate. I'm all about customization/giving the user the choice to choose what they want.

I would be happier if they had offered the ascending volume of ringtones as an option to enable or disable as you see fit instead of making it "mandatory".

But that's just me.

My guess is that LG felt it was such a liability issue they decided to not give the user a choice. - like the women who sued McDonalds because she was burned by hot coffie that was too hot - and won 80+million, or the class action suit against Western Digital becuase they didn't explain how they - hard drive manufactures count memory storage different that OS manufactures like Microsoft - or the countless lawsuits and class action suits against wireless carriers because they failed to do something or disclose something, LG probably modified the volume becuase of prior litagation or because of the outcome of current litigation. Often our limits are defined through the stupidity of others.

Every phone I've seen that employs the ringer speaker as the phone earpiece has a mandatory ascending ringer. They also have a crappy sounding, hollow/tinny voice call quality. All LG phones are made this way, and most Samsungs. That's why their earpiece sound quality is so inferior to the rest.

If you ask someone who has changed from a CDMA to GSM carrier, most will tell you that GSM sounds more bassy and more natural. Well, that's because most CDMA phones sold in the US are made by either LG or Samsung, which make hollow sounding earpieces, so when they switch to a GSM carrier and pick either a Nokia or Motorola phone, they immediately notice the sound quality is richer due to the better earpiece quality.

I have noticed a different in SQ from my Samsung A940 with Sprint and my Nokia's, and now my LG's on Cingular. To me the difference is more in how natural the human voice sounds, GSM has always sounded better at reproducing the human voice, but CDMA has been better at passing the quieter sounds, background sounds, noise, ect. I know that hearing is very subjective, but that's what I have observed after several years of having both CDMA and GSM services.

I was annoyed by this also. I sent my contacts to the phone using Bluetooth from my Nokia. The way I fixed it was that I had to edit each contact to remove the extraneous characters.

Meaning: phone entry was "(xxx) xxx-xxxx" and I edited once on the LG to "xxxxxxxxxx" and saved it. Then my call log started showing the names. I don't know if its strictly necessary to remove the "(", ")" and "-" characters or just to simply edit the contact and re-save it, but that fixed it for me.

The only problem I had with names not showing up was because I had duplicate numbers in my contacts list. When I cleaned up the list, my names showed up. Also I had to make sure the number where entered area-code + number. Some of the numbers were saved with a 1 in front of them, which didn't cause the number not to dial, but did confuse the phone and cause the name not to show up - because the number was being sent to the phone without the one so, the phone didn't find a match and wasn't showing the name.

Bugs I noticed:

* phone crashes/resets trying to stream MP3 audio from somafm.com

* third-party Java apps cause "yes, allow once/no, disallow always" dialog each time a network connection is opened

* call volume sometimes fluctuates up and down

* ringer doesn't obey ringer volume setting

Usability problems:

* the way you turn T9 on/off is different in different apps/contexts, and sometimes not possible at all (e.g. WAP input fields -- really sucks for posting on wap.hofo)

* web browser does a good job of rendering full HTML sites but doesn't reformat pages to fit on screen width -- have to pan back and forth to read

* web browser font is large and not configurable -- a smaller font would allow more text on the screen

* JavaScript support in web browser is weak to nonexistent

* main menu is cluttered with Cingular marketing crap (Cingular Mall, Cingular Video, blah blah blah) and can't be reconfigured

* Cingular Music button can't be reconfigured to something else

* D-pad can't be reconfigured to launch different apps

* three different menus accessible from idle screen -- I had a hard time remembering how I got to different apps

* user-configurable menu doesn't allow direct linking to third-party Java apps, only to applications folder

* phone doesn't understand multi-contact .vcf files, so contacts must be exported/imported one by one

* can't reconfigure browser homepage to something other than MEdia Net

* no manual network selection (I swear I saw this once but never found it again)

* no way to cut/paste text

I haven't noticed any drastic volume changes, I have noticed some change in volume, but it was slight and I was going from a loud outside to a quieter inside enviorment.

When I get a missed call it is displayed on the external screen with the time of the call. The same info is on the internal screen with the choices of view or ignore. If I pick view I'm taken to a missed call list. - this is the same as my Sansung A940 does.

Posted by: nieds

You only see it on the external screen or internal screen once opened or if you hit 1 of the exterior buttons. On the v3 you could set it up whereby it would beep every minute or 2 to let you know you missed those messages

Transfered my MP3 Ringtones from my Razr and one refused to play as a ringtone on the CU500. It played as music but wouldnt allow to be set at ringtone. I then edited the tone by making the quality and bit rate the same as the others that worked and even shorten the length, nothing. I finally got it working by recoding it using MPT melody studio and then it worked. Kinda difficult since I tried recoding it 10 times using Nero and FreeRip to an MP3 and nothing till MPT.

Funny you sould say that - two friends of mine - have razor's and they both told me - within the last week - that they FINALLY figured out how to turn off this annoying beep thier phones have. Being dumb, I said 'what beep' and both people, different times different places, told me simular stories that thier Razor's would just beep, and they couldn't figure out how to turn it off. Both after digging through menus, figured out it was a missed event beep, and since they never had such a feature before on any other phone, tured it off! Actually, I would find that 'feature' extremely annoying, just like the people who don't like the assending volume on the CU500. If I want to know I missed a call, I can open the phone, after all I'm going to open it anyway to make a call or check email.

What did you do, or MPT do, to make the MP3 more acceptable to the CU500? When you re-encoded it what was the origional encoding and what did you change it to ?

I've encountered this with my CU500, but I believe killing AMR and enabling EFR has helped it. I think it still fluctuates a bit, but it's not as bad, nor as often after enabling EFR.

I'd also be curious to know if anyone else with a CU500 has noticed this problem, and those of you that don't; have you enabled EFR on your phones? (Just trying to figure out if the fluctuating earpiece volume is really effected by EFR/AMR or not).

Thanks.

Good news! You can stream from SomaFM just fine if you select 3GPP. And it sounds GREAT.

LOVE the CU500... The only thing that is bothering me at the moment is that you can shut the clamshell while playing mobi radio! i know kinda lame

I agree, you should be able to keep the application running when you close the flip, on my Samsung a940, you can close the flip and watch mobitv or listen to the radio on the external screen. when you open the flip again, whatever you are listening or watching moves to the internal display, very handy feature.

Some of those points you made are only possible on S60 nokia phone.

the ringer volume thing is driving me nuts, I too have the sim pin problem, so I just don't use one anymore and the only other problem I am having is I can't bt files from my phone to my pc but can from pc to my phone

Posted by: wpbear

I tried other MP3 coding where I could pick bit rates etc, and I made all the setting s match another MP3 that had worked, but nothing fixed it until I turned it into a WAV, then edited it in MPT and saved back to MP3 in MPT. Really frustrating since the MP3 played in the music player just wouldnt be a ringtone.

Blumoto, make sure you are NOT using the generic BT software provided by Microsoft as by default MS doesn't install the needed BT profiles on your PC. Several posters with the same problem as you resolved it by installing the BT software that came with the BT device, laptop, ect. You need to have "OBEX file transfer" BT profile installed and enabled in your PC's BT software in order to transfer fiesl suscessfully btwn pc and phone.

Log into Cingular My Account and then click "Contact Us" Send an email through their system for phone support and tell them you travel overseas often and are expecting to leave for Europe in about 30 day. Also explain that you paid full price (or wait 90 days and it doesnt matter). Wait patiently about 10-14 days and you should get the code. The same process has worked for Tmobile and Cingular for me.

I know you had trouble with the CU320, but the guy on Ebay says it is possible and I havent seen his feedback going down, so he must be selling unlocked CU500's

I logged into my Cingular account, I went to the contact us link at the bottom of the page, and the resulting page listed how to contact Cingular, but I could find nohere on any page, support forum, answer, troublshooting, ect where I can send something directly to Cingular from Cingular's webpage. Everything I found points to automated database, 866-CINGULAR, or online support forums. Could you be more specific where you go to send a msg. to Cingular ? Thanks

Hi,

There are only three menus in my Network Connection settings menu.

Could I have done something in the service menus to disable being able to select the Network Setting?

Also, my phone "crashed" when trying to stream somaFM?

Thanks,

Not sure about the network commection setting menu, but with SomaFM, be sure you choose the 3GP streaming choice, all others MP3, AAC, AAC+ will cause the phone to reboot ... or at least mine did

Anyone figure out how to Silent the phone? No ring, no vib?
Also, if you set the alarm and turn the phone off, the alarm will not sound. That's why I'm trying to figure out if I can silent the phone and see if the alarm gives me a sound.
I like to turn the phone off or silent it at nite, in case I get a call, but still want the alarm to wake me up. This is a big deal, someone need to figure this out.

The only way I know to silence the phone is to use the vol. button on the side, push it until the scren shows "all off" . Unlike my Nokia, this phone doesn't use profiles to set its levels

Ok, I did figure that out.
Phone in Silent= No Alarm sound
Phone in Vibrate= Alarm Vibrates only
Phone Volume set to 1-7= Alarm Volume 1-7
Phone is Off= No Alarm
I don' want to get a call in the middle of the nite and like to keep the phone off or in silent, but this LG is not going to work.
I'm going to try this out later.
Put the phone in Flight Mode, and hope the Alarm still works. It turns off the network, and I assume if I got a call.sms.mms, they would go to VM and when I switched back from FM I could get it. I'll be trying this out and report back.

Unfortunately you're going to have to "give it away" for a lot cheaper than that. Firstly, its not new anymore, and secondly, I just got a new one for $79.99. Good luck though.

Just FYI, you can silence the phone quickly by holding the * key for about 3 seconds. Repeat to unsilence. Now if only I could turn off those annoying confirmation tones.

I have no idea if it's a bug or what... but when I'm on a call the internal screen goes black after a few seconds (after the backlight timer elapses).

I'm used to the screen dimming instead of going completely black. My LG VX8100 just dimmed the screen. I spend all day on conference calls going between MUTE and UNMUTE. I used to be able to just look at the screen to double-check I am on mute before doing noisy stuff (opening a beer, watching TV )

So... does anyone know how to have the screen dim instead of turn off when I'm on a call?

I noticed the same thing, I don't think it's technically a bug, I could not find an option for 'always on' or 'dim screen' in the display properties, so my guess is it's simply not an option.

I used to be able to just look at the screen to double-check I am on mute before doing noisy stuff (opening a beer, watching TV )

So... does anyone know how to have the screen dim instead of turn off when I'm on a call?

it's definitely an annoying feature. i was connecting to media net and it took so long the screen went black. i figured it would light up again once the connection was made. after about a minute i finally pushed a button and turns out it connected but the screen had stayed black. it's these little annoyances that's making this phone hard for me to want to keep.

My A940 from Samsung is the same way, it the screen goes dark. My pocket PC does the same thing - unless I set it to always on., so I wasn't suprised about the CU500,

So, the battery time is pretty bad and the click, when you open the phone to the fullest, has disappeared. The screen now has some slack to it making it a bit wobbly.

I posted this in another thread before I saw this thread.

Has anyone had trouble setting up groups to use different ringtones? I work for Cingular and we had a customer who would set up groups with ringtones assigned to them but the phone would always play the default ringtone. We called LG and they said it was a software issue that they werent going to do anything about? Could someone try this and let me know? Thanks.

Posted by: davesz

yeah, that feature is unfortunately crippled, as in doesn't work at ALL. Someone said cingualr is looking into it but who knows. This phone was great for about a day or two, then all the BS started showing up...

Posted by: Faceless Rebel

Can someone please tell me what stupid, random method the phone uses to list MP3's in All Songs display? Even when I purposely name EVERY MP3 with an identical prefix to indicate they are all part of the same album, the listing still insists on scattering them randomly throughout the list. WTF?

This is one of the few things that I really don't like about this phone. I still can't believe LG hasn't released some kind of software interface to let you create and manage playlists via a PC. Yes, you can create and manage playlists on the phone, itself, but that's not good enough when you have as many songs as I tend to in your playlists.

I'm getting down to the last few days of my 30 day return period and am trying to decide if I'm going to keep this phone or not, and this is one thing that's making me consider returning the CU500. *sigh*

Posted by: davesz

me too but, I don't see any phones on cingular.com that come even close to what the cu500 has...

True. The CU500 is a pretty darn feature-rich phone. Gotta give LG props for supplying quite a few nice features in the phone.

If I do return the CU500 I'll prolly get a SE W810i in it's place. I've been reading lots of good things about it and I love the SE UI. It's very nice.

Plus, as you stated, there's nothing else that Cingular is actually offering at this point in time that really tempts me.

Posted by: davesz

the w810 looks good but I'm one of those people who think that even $150 is too much for a phone...

Posted by: nads1824

my problems with the lg CU500 are
1.you can't choose what phonebook to use: the phone memory or THE simcard MEMORY THE PHONE shows both.
2.there is no security option for thE phone to lock itself, MEANING so THAT you have to enter a lock code after a certain amount of minutes.
3.can't turn off voicemail notification or command notification withOUT turning off all ring volume.
4.sim code request when the phone reboots does not work, it says invalid smartchip

Posted by: nads1824

I Have The Unlock Code For MY CU500 BUT I DONT KNOW HOW TO Enter It, Does Anyone Know How TO.

By rings, do you mean the insulating rings between the metal contact areas? Both my 3.5 mm Sony headphone jack and the 3.5/2.5 mm adapter I bought have 2 insulating rings and therefore 3 metal areas.

I can get another adapter, but I'd like to keep my $50 Sony headphones. Is there an adapter that will work for me?

Thanks

Posted by: filmat11

Adding to the above question, CellPhoneMall.net has what it describes as a

Stereo headphone adapter with a 2.5mm 3 pin connection to covert to 3.5mm

and a

Motorola Stereo headphone adapter with a 2.5mm 4 pin connection to covert to 3.5mm

are either of these the right one for the LG CU500?

Posted by: Gtx1

The second one would work .

Yes, that's what I was referring to when I said "rings".

Regarding your follow-up post, it looks like the Motorola adapter would work, given that it has 3 rings. The other one would prolly NOT work.

But, as I stated a loooong time ago in this thread, I don't know for sure that any/all 3 ring adapters will work with this phone. There could be some variation that make some work and others not for all I know. It does seem though that other CU500 owners concur and have successfully used 3 ring adapters.

Good luck.

Cool. Many thanks to you both. Now at least I know what to look for.

I don't have the CU500 yet I might swap for it tomorrow, but the w810i sounds nice.

Does anyone know when the W810i is going to be available?

(Sorry for being OT - PM me if you want.)

TIA!!!

What if you AREN'T going to make a call? If I'm at home and my phone's recharging on my dresser, and a call comes in while I'm taking out the garbage, how in hell am I going to know about it without a persistent audible alert that keeps sounding until I shut it off? This is an essential feature. Make it defeatable, but EVERY phone should have this. Inexplicably, my StarTAC had this but my E815 just beeps ONCE, stupidly, when the message comes in and then never again. Two days later I find out someone left me a voice mail. ASININE. Like hell am I going to be constantly running to my phone and digging into a menu to see if I got voice mail.

And this escalating-ringtone-volume thing sucks. I've edited lots of song snippets specifically to use as ringtones with a particular beginning and particular end, often to make sure they're audible from a pants pocket or jacket. Using the earpiece speaker as the ringer STINKS, but if they insist on doing it, why not have the ringer start muted ONLY IF THE PHONE'S OPEN?

Posted by: davesz

why would you not check your phone for two days? It's a cellphone, you carry it with you. If you don't have it with you, you check it as soon as you get it back. at least I do.

Wow I'm glad that this thread was made. Yes I know that all cell phones have flaws, (and even if they didn't somebody would still find one).

I had every intention of picking up this phone today and swapping it out with my 6682 (since its falling apart), but now I'm starting to become open minded of the V3i since that should be in before the end of the month and I won't be using the video or internet of the CU500 at all.

Correct me if I'm wrong but reading this thread (and others), it seems that most of the problems are more phone general related and the only bright spot is using "Cingular Video" or the 3G for Data (Internet surfing not talking about the 3G during calls).

Your kidding right!!!??! You want to phone to constantly alert you that you missed a call or have VM? Your to fn lazy to walk to your phone to look at it? Hell, home phones don't even have this feature, you actually have to walk over to the answering machine to see if there's a msg.

Damn, people in the world today are getting so damn lazy!

I would hate having a persistent audible alert. Think how many times you purposely do not answer the phone because you dont want to talk. Now you've got that damn alert beepping in the background reminding you that you didn't take that call.

Bear in mind that you're reading a thread specifically about problems with the CU500, thus the comments in here are going to be on the negative side. You shouldn't solely base your decision on what you read out of this one particular thread.

I think the CU500 is quite a good phone. Any phone will have problems, some more than others. Look around and check out some of the other threads about the CU500 if you're interested in the phone. You'll find quite a few here.

Whatever phone you go with, good luck with your decision. Hope you find something you like.

I have the EXACT same problem. I've setup ringtones for groups and individual contacts and it only plays the default ringtone.
Also my volume increases/decreases when listing to VM
And the ascending ringtone I dont like either.

But anyway, has anyone figured out how to fix the ringtone issue(setting ringtones for groups and individual contacts)???
