I just got mine in the mail today... I'm not in a 3G area, but the 3G SIM card they included works just fine, no reason to move my old SIM over. I pretty much followed instructions, charged up the phone, activated it online, waited 15 minutes, then turned it on and I was all set.

Are you trying a new SIM? Old SIM? Did you do the activation procedure?

i used my 64k sim card, i bought the phone from ebay

Ah, I don't know... Give Cingular a call?

You may well not be able to use the CU500 without a 64k 3G SIM card. You should call up Cingular or go to a local Cingular store and talk to them about getting one.

Posted by: theGrue

Yeah that's a possibility... I don't have a plain 64k SIM on hand, but my old 32k SIM does not seem to work. There aren't any error messages like you have, just no service.

Posted by: tom1234

do you mean there is a64k,3gsim card, or 3g card by itself, i am current using 64k sim card and it works with all the phones that i have owne

Posted by: theGrue

I'm pretty sure there are 3 different kinds out there, yeah. The old 32k sim from before the AT&T merger, the vanilla 64k SIM (white on the side with the gold contacts), and the 3G 64k SIM (blue on the side with the gold contacts). And even though it's the "3G" SIM, it still works on the GSM networks, if you don't live in a 3G area.

I ran into the same problem... it happened after I added "ask for PIN at startup" to my SIM card. After I put my SIM into my other phone and removed the PIN number for the SIM card, it worked perfectly.

Anybody else having issues using PIN check on the CU500???

Posted by: ranphi

^TheGrue has got it right.

I have the CU500 and live in an area where 3G service isn't available yet, but I'm using the 64k 3G SIM card and it works just fine.

hey Offrdrider21, how you remove the pin number

Stuck the SIM card into my backup phone (SLVR) and disabled the "ask for pin at startup" via the seurity menu. After doing that, I no longer would get the "Invalid Smartchip" message on the CU500.

I belive that you just need the th 3G enabled one so the phone understands that when you come in to a 3G area to switch over to the 3G experience

I had the same issue with the pin code removed the sim pin and it works fine, the only other issue I am really having is when I try to send files from the phone to my pc via bluetooth it keeps saying "sending cancelled" but from my pc to my phone no problems, it is a pain in the A$$, called cing. and they have no clue about anything, I have done some searching but came up with nothing maybe cing. restricted the bt i have no clue, any help? I really hope that sofware upgrade feature will eventually work some time soon.

I just got a CU500 it was shipped by the corporae office to a store near me that is in a non 3G area, thery gave me a 3G SIM Card but no one at the sotre had any training on how to activate for 3G, so my question is, how can you tell you are activated for 3G?

I have tge following two features on my account according to Cingular online

/NATION GAIT/GSM

UMTS AUTO ATTACH FEATURE

Does that mena I am 3G Activated?

Just in case you misunderstood what I wrote, I wasn't saying that he has to have a 64k 3G SIM card to use the phone. It was just a troubleshooting suggestion to help him try and figure out a way to solve his problem.

Earlier, someone had posted that they didn't have a 3G SIM and couldn't use 3G service, but their brother did have a 3G card and could use 3G service and they both lived in Chicago. So, at that time, it seemed like a possibility that one might have to have a 3G SIM to utilize Cingular's 3G service.

He later retracted his statement when he found that he could use 3G service without having a 3G SIM.

Info has been unknown/changing/conflicting (in some cases) since this phone is so new and people are still learning how to use it.

Just wanted to clarify what I meant.

I got my phone from Fedex and it came with a new SIM even though I had a 3G SIM in my old phone. I put the old SIM in and it worked fine, but I am on the edge of a 3G area and even drove well into the areaand I couldn't get 3G to work. I went to a copr store and the guy said the 3G area is mapped wrong on the street level guides, but he checked my account and said that just to be sure he scalled the barcode on my phone and that added UMTS to my feature list automatically. I then drove 5 miles further into the 3 G zone and it worked, so who knows if having UTMS on your feature list actually matters.
