3g/umts question

I was looking at purchasing the w850 when it comes out. If I live in an area where 3g/umts is supported for cingular will the phone recognize 3g/umts since the w850 supports 2100 umts and cingular is 1900 umts? Also if I bought 2 of them would I be able to use videophone when talking to the wife or does it have to be operator/carrier supported?

No wont work. At the moment it has to be 1900 utms then later 850. 2100 is a euro band. Try one of the lg or samsungs they are pretty good

the 2100Mhz band in the US is currently assigned to Government-Military. Therefore you would need a phone that is either 'tri band' umts or one that is specifcly designed for the US market with 1900 / 850 UMTS / HSDPA. You would still be able to use other features of the phone, EDGE,GPRS, ect as long as the phone has the US freq's. 850 / 1900fMhz.

Actually, the 2100 band will never work in the US for the foreseeable (sp?) future. In Europe, they use the 2100 for both upstream and downstream data, but in America I believe (when/if 2100 is auctioned) 2100 will be used for downstream and 1900 for upstream.

I bet companies like cingular do this to prevent people from buying phones from over seas that are more advanced and cost less. This allows them to control their market.

no they don't do anything... it's the fact that the military already uses that band here in the US while abroad they use different frequencies. So their phones wouldn't work here because the frequency can't be deployed because as i said, the miliary is already on it.

Hey, I took it from a LONGER list! It's too bad the US has always done its own thing when it comes to freq's. OUr cellplhone, digital TV, digital AM and FM, even Sat. radio are all on different freg's. and in some cases different formats and different standards than the rest of the world. I think wifi, bluetooth, and wimx, are about the only things we share with the rest of the world.
