650 Hotsync issue (complex)

It's my first time trying to sync to this new computer (HP zd8430ca laptop)

1st attempt:

plug it in using the cable. Windows sees the Treo as an unknown devise and gives me a "USB device not recognized" error. Additionally in my device manager, I’m only seeing one port (COM4) which is used by my Bluetooth from HP (I've disabled the BT)

I did see a "com1 is busy" warning during my first attempt, but now I can’t see any COM1 listed anywhere in my computer.

2nd attempt:

Use Palm's USB Reg Clean/ Reinstall Palm desktop and hotsync.

Computer still not seeing Treo. No hotsync.

I have also soft reset the phone.

Does anyone know what is going on? I need a serious step by step on this... Palm site browsing all day hasn't done much for me.

Okay, try uninstalling all of your old Palm desktop software. But before you uninstall, please backup your hotsync folder. (It's located in the PalmOne folder, I presume.) Now reinstall it and see what happens. Sometimes it's just bad USB drivers that's causing all of this...

I am having similar problems. I cannot install from the disc that came with my Cingular 650. It says Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\WINDOWS\Installer\Palm.msi

What does that mean??? It has happened with 2 totally different install discs.

I'm currently having issues Sync with this error 1316. I can not uninstall the whole software. Verizon doesn't know the issue, they transfer me to palm customer service.,but these people are worse than Airport officials, they ask to many questions (eg if its the first time calling and if "I" have a reference #) and what has happened to me to this point (with palm) my communication with them drops even from a land line phone. So I need someone's help here!!

Hi,

This is Kevin from Palm. Regarding the 1316 error, it often occurs after you delete an older version of Palm Desktop but the registry entries were not completely removed, causing installation problems with the new Palm Desktop. The Palm Knowledge Library article "'1316 Error' or '1714 Unable to Remove the older version of the Palm Desktop'" offers a possible solution.

Sincerely
Kevin
