I went ahead and caved and ordered the Qtek 8500. The form of this with the smartphone OS is just something I have always wanted. I have said in months past that i would love a RAZR with a smartphone os. Well I could not wait any longer.

So my question is this... Are there any of you Qtek 8500 owners who DO NOT have the missed call problem and are completly satisfied with the phone? I am just trying to figure out how widespread the problem really is. is it 100%, 90% or lower? is there a good chance that my phone, when I get it, may work fine?

Happy and satisfied 8500 owners speak up! Tell me what you love about this phone. Please help me feel good about going ahead and ordering one!.

Hell, I have the missed call problem (patched of course) and I'm still happy with the phone. I think its much better than my MPx220. Better sound quality, better picture quality...

I'm satisfied with my purchase!

I am very happy with my qtek 8500( no missed calls )

In one week I have been able to completely replace my treo with a phone the size of a razor:QTEK 8500

I was a heavy treo user, using the treo for a phone, for work( as physician): I used epocrates as drug data-base and I kept track of hospital patients and surgery which I would code on the treo and e-mail( though pop3) account to my office manager for billing, and lastly I used audible to listen to books on tape.

I am happy to say that in a mere few days( and a 1gig transflash card) my QTEK has been able to surpass the treo
I am running Tweaks2k2 on the phone: I have over 5,000k free
On the card I am running clearvue suite, Epocrates, Audible, PhatNotes, and TCPMP
PhatNotes allows me to keep track of patients and e-mail them to the office(as well a syncing with outlook)

In fact the QTEK 8500 surpasses the treo on its ability to read PDF on the fly( a constant treo problem), and I can listen to books on tape or music with audible,TCPMP, and wmp through my Motorola HT-820 bluetooth headset ( A feat which requires third party software on the treo which usually caused my treo to sputter, freeze and require a reset)

I was sceptical moving to a smartphone, but I loved to razorish form factor.

No missed calls, absolutely a wonderful phone and i have tried then all. :-)

The missed calls issue was BIG. But after 24 hours with the i-mate ROM, the problem seems solved and the phone is definitely living up to the hype. WM5 at RAZR size...what's not to love?

Missed call issue patched with the "band aid". Other than that -- a $9 fix -- it's a great phone. Completely pocketable, and I'm addicted to having my Outlook info with me ...

Posted by: madgalaxy

What is this "fix" or "bandaid" everyone is talking about?

Posted by: chawks2

Use "Stay Connected" from Slipstream. For all you bozo's who paid for it, there is a crack out there. Just do some research.

..or alternatively support the development of Smartphone software by actually paying for the product. If these guys at Slipstream had never bothered to make their software, you'd still be having missed calls. I mean, it's $9...

I pay for things when they are in my own interest to pay for them. In this case, it seems silly for me to pay for something I am going to remove in approx. 2 months. However, I do agree with your philosophy.

I agree completely. That is why I steal my food from grocery stores. It seems silly to pay for something my body is going to remove in a few hours.

Now, THAT is funny!

I have no issues paying for software, but I would rather CID unock it and install the i-Mate ROM.

Posted by: jomo25

I have the Dopod. And I've been extremely happy with it.

I love my Qtek 8500, aside from the missing call problem. I had the tmobile SDA before and the qtek 8500 is better in every aspect except for battery life.

back from the realm of Crack-berries. Loving this phone. the screen and customizability of this phone is awesome.

just need to know where to find good accessories for this bad boy...

actually, my friends who have the RAZR are a little jealous of this phone.

Very happy with mine. So far, Stay-Connected is doing the trick for me. I will probably purchase that once my trial is up, and wait for the HTC ROM-fix that should be out some day . . maybe a few months?

Here's the link. Note that there are PPC and SmartPhone versions.

Posted by: hope4jsl

Well I'm starting to feel better about my purchase. In fact I'm getting excited now. it is shceduled to arrive tommorow.

Is it true that I can use almost any case made for the RAZR?

Posted by: hope4jsl

Well I got mine today. it is great. i think it is a keeper!

I did have the missed call issue almost an hour after I had it. I did not waste any time...I paid the $40 and CID unlocked it and flashed over the the imate ROM. Works great now.

Oh ****,(no pun intended) I nearly busted a gut!!!

Anyway, back to the topic. I'm loving it, NO missed calls, no RAZR withdrawals!(Something that happened, when carrying the 8125 all the time)

Hey. I just recieved this phone and i am very happy, especially happy that it does not have the "dropping calls" bug. I have the latest Dopod OS and seems to work fine. No need for the "band aid" on this ROM!!!
Very satisfied with everything, although it doesnt have the features that my pocket pc has to offer, I am happy with it's size.

Posted by: WeatherB

Is a data plan required for the "band-aid" fix?

Posted by: lokkje

Some sort of data connection is required. There was a discussion earlier by people that do not have an unlimited data plan, but I did not follow it (I have an unlimited plan).

You can try it to see if it works. That would be awesome for those that do not have a plan to begin with...

How is this band-aid affecting the battery time on the phone. Does it have to be charged more then once a day?

Posted by: Barnstormer64

I don't have to charge mine more than once a day . . but then I'm not a power user, either.

Posted by: Slider76

I have found that setting up my "pull-email" to check my POP account every 15 minutes seems to do the trick. I suppose if you were worried about data usage, you could set up a new POP account with your ISP and not actually use it for anything. This way until the "junk mail hounds" found you there wouldn't be any data transferred (used).

By the way, this method doesn not appear to seriously affect battery life either. I always charge overnight, start the day about 6:30 am and generally have between 30-40% left when I plug it in again at 11:00 pm.

Posted by: Barnstormer64

Thanks for that idea. I have mine set up with my work email (which is "pushed"), and I also have my own personal gmail account set up. But, I retrieve that manually.

Once my "Stay Connected" free trial expires in a few days, I will try what you suggest: having the gmail account queried every 15 minutes.

Eventually I will get the phone CID unlocked and switch to a different ROM, but I'd prefer to wait for a new HTC ROM, or preferably the Cingular ROM once its available.

Posted by: chawks2

Having the pull email appeared to work for me, but wait until your account does not get an email after about 15 minutes. The missing calls will eventually return.

Originally, I thought the email was working perfectly, until I checked my voicemail and had 4 messages.

Posted by: Slider76

Well, I have not had a missed call now in over 3 weeks. Theoretically, every time your phone polls the server (15 minutes) it is "working". If you manually poll the server by going into Messaging, selecting your account, then clicking Menu -> Send/Receive, you can see the progress at the top of the screen.

Connecting...Logging On...Sending and Receiving...Disconnecting...Finished.

Even if there are no messages and hence, no actual data transfer, the phone is still going through the steps every 15 minutes and this should keep it from going into the "deep sleep" mode.

Perhaps you had these calls come in while the phone was polling the server or actually downloading messages. I am not sure why your device would get a different result than mine.

I would HOPE that the phone is a "phone first", and the phone would ring, and stop connecting to the network.

Posted by: Ya Bo7med

Let me get this straight. Currently there are only 2 fixes to the missed call bug:
1. StayConnected Software
2. i-mate ROM

Is this correct?

Good point Barnstormer64. That is my understanding of how they are supposed to work but I am grabbing at straws. Will it actually suspend data if you are in the middle of a transfer when the phone call comes in? I have read posts and blogs supporting both theories.

I have no other explanation as to why my device's behavior has changed (for the better) post push email. Perhaps I should mention that I only had my 8500 for about a week before I set up push email and during that time I only missed one call.

If I had to guess, I would say that the problems we are experiencing are centered around the device's ability (or inability) to efficiently switch between the 850 and 1900 bands.

Posted by: Barnstormer64

I just tested it out . . my phone was logging into Gmail and starting to download messages. I called the phone, and it immediately quit the Gmail query and the phone rang.

Posted by: Barnstormer64

I agree that it's either a problem when switching between 850/1900, or possibly switching between Cell Towers.

Mine will occasionally refuse to send an MMS message, for example. If I then turn the phone off and back on, it will switch from what it said was an EDGE connection to a GRPS connection.

I really think it's an issue of switching from one kind of connection to another. Possibly excacerbated by the fact that I'm in the US, but the current ROM has a prefernce for European bands.

Hopefully a Cingular ROM will cure this, once its available.

Posted by: Slider76

Yes, I will agree with the connection issue. I am not so sure it has anything to do with the tower though unless it is combined with the connection (850/1900-EDGE/GPRS) issue.

My office is in my basement (concrete walls, minimal windows) and during the course of the day I can have full bars on EDGE down to 1 or 2 bars on GPRS, without really moving. So I can assume that I am still getting my signal from the same tower, which is about 500 meters from my house. Right now I have full bars on EDGE.

The funny thing is, many times when my signal changes over to GPRS from EDGE, the only way to get it back to EDGE is to turn the phone off and back on. Again, this would indicate a problem with the phone's ability to switch frequencies.

Posted by: Barnstormer64

I have seen my phone go from GPRS to Edge on its own. And vice versa. It seems to "hang up" when it goes from Edge down to GPRS, though.

Posted by: Ya Bo7med

I realized i have the missing call issue when i checked my voicemail and found 12 unheard voicemails. Can someone please tell me where i can find the i-mate ROM?
