i just got my license and my dad added me to his insurance plan. i live in california and have mercury insurance, i'm just wondering how long it'll take for the insurance stuff to come in. its been about a week. also do i have to wait for my own card to come in, or can i use my dad's

hmm... usually it takes a few days, but usually less than a week.

Although, when I bought my car recently, the dealer called State Farm, and they added me to my dad's insurance pretty much instantly... we had to give a 3 month payment up front though. They then told us to come in with the car...

well, we took the window sticker (my dad tells me they just want to see that, not really the car), and I got two cards, but my dad's name is on it because its his insurance and I'm just a driver on it. Doesn't matter though, my insurance is still nearly $1,000 every six months

I won't have any money left for stuff.

So much for my dad's nearly 40 years of nearly clean driving and my "good student" and "safe driver program" passee crap

Did he add you on to his policy as a driver - meaning, simply add you on to his existing car's policy? If so.. I don't think you'll get your own card. The papers stay in the car and it would be under your dad's name so no new cards would be necessary.

If you got a new car and you were added under his policy this way, then yes, you would have your own insurance card - most likely with his name on it.

When I got my car, I decided to go with Geico and they fax you a temporary insurance card (which you can also print online from their website) so you can immediately start driving until the "real" papers come in the mail. Ugh..which reminds me..my insurance policy renewal is coming up so I have to send everything in. My policy is completely under my name and because my car is fairly new I have COMP + COLL but the price is still pretty good.
