AT&T 3G Rollout - Latest markets launching

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Bpt_Flames

I hear people say that they know when a city will get 3g, i was just wonderin how do you poeple know that. For example i heard that their will be 3g in CT by september but i dont know for sure. The Reason i ask is because my contract expires in in August and i dont want to upgrade and then not be able to get discounts on a 3g phone when its available.

Posted by: f0n3PhRe3k

not sure, i know Testing is going on now in NC though only on a few remote areas.

Posted by: Isriam

because most of us work on the network who know these type things. albq is being tested currently.

So, what's going on in Los Angeles? Coverage with the new 64k chip sucks.

Yes they are really setting up the 3g towers in Charlotte.

I am a UPS delivery driver and there is a company that I deliver to everyday called Trinity Telecom. They are setting up and testing the 3g hardware here in the Charlotte, NC area.

I always have these Trinity Telecom (Cingular boxes) and I just had to ask.

If I were a betting guy I'd say CT will probably be more like October

Posted by: jkb246

Its funny NJ and the rest of NYC one of the richest areas in the Country will barely have 3G minus 2 cities by the end of the year. What are they doing

I got you covered,

Charlotte should launch in the end of August. Greensboro and Columbia should launch in October.

No Raliegh launch, but other makets, after.

Posted by: Googa7753

Does anyone have word on HSDPA service in the Rochester/Buffalo (Western & Upstate New York) markets? We always get shafted up there where I go to school (RIT). All the new tech last.

Posted by: I have a phone

Upstate is some time mid '07

Northern CA outside of SF and SJ? Ie.Santa Rosa, Napa, Petaluma, Sacramento, Williams, Anderson, Redding, Red Bluff, Chico, Marysville, Oroville, Colusa, Woodland, Roseville. How about the Central Valley and the coast?

We'll probably get it after Raleigh. More than likely. Although Charlotte being up and running by the end of August makes me happy.

Isn't the KC metro due for sometime in SEPT??

Not sure, but I would imagine Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport would be the first in line.

That's easy. Cingular has even put up a map of it: http://cingular.com/media/CingularV...York_3G_map.pdf

Note the future coverage area for September 2006.

3g in sacramento went live, now it testing phase

Posted by: Maaz

Any word on Pittsburgh yet? We got GSM before most of these other cities, though that was under AT&T Wireless.

OK.. I know I am most likely not going to have HSDPA coverage for some time, but what about UMTS? Does anyone know where I can find UMTS coverage maps?

There will be no difference in the date. Cingular's rollout of 3G is UMTS/HSDPA. The second your market gets UMTS from Cingular, it will have HSDPA. So, there is no seperate timetable for UMTS or seperate coverage maps for UMTS.

Yes.. I understand that the future rollout of HSDPA will include UMTS but from what I understand, since the rollout of UMTS began first, there are currently UMTS markets that do not include HSDPA (Philly).. so I am looking for the coverage maps of current UMTS that had been put up prior to the HSDPA rollout. Am I wrong about this?

Posted by: Justin5117

Philly isnt a UMTS market currently.

Check your coverage maps dudes! Greenwich CT is live 3G, the I95 corridor will go live in October,Stamford,Norwalk,Bridgeport,New Haven as well as Hartford-----3 gizzels

Any idea when the Bay Area's 3G network is going to get some love? I found lots of holes in areas supposedly covered by 3G a few weeks ago. Is there any work going on there?

Posted by: ilvla2

The Bay Area coverage for 3G is TINY, no east bay, no north bay. I'm 115 miles north of SF myself, up here in Mendocino County, served by Cingular's Affiliate Edge Wireless, and they are working on deploying UMTS/HSDPA in their areas as well.

Quote:

**** yes! I was right Fall '06, hopefully it will be like VZ's EVDO rollout, Covered Sacramento, Roseville and Auburn, so as its done being tested here I come 3G!!!

Posted by: ilvla2

Now they need to get it to the rest of the Sacramento and Northern Sacramento Valley's! Oh, push it further north across the Bay into Marin and Sonoma Counties too. At the rate they're going, I'll probably have it here from Edge (who is deplying UMTS/HSDPA in their areas, though I don't have a time schedule on it) before any of that happens though lol The closest 3G we have right now is Verizon Wireless's EVDO, which ends 50 miles south of us in Healdsburg in Sonoma County, we're still 1x and EDGE up here.

That is good to hear about Sacramento though, how far north does it go, Woodland? I know Verizon's EVDO goes as far north as Lincoln.

Posted by: co678

Quote:

IIRC, Oakland is east bay

Posted by: ilvla2

Yeah, that's true, I was thinking more like Martinez, Brentwood, Pittsburg, Antioch, Hercules, Concord, etc. though.

Lincoln, eh, I've had EVDO all the way up to Auburn on 193 when there was service

Heres what Sacramento 3G on Cingular should look like (this map is a little dated, i added known coverage on Hwy 49 where I know theres EV coverage there where this map showed none)

Posted by: ilvla2

If it's like that, it should be good, though I will be very happy when 3G gets to Yuba City, Marysville, Gridley, Chico, Oroville, Red Bluff, Redding, Anderson, Williams, Colusa, Corning and Willows too My dad and I do a lot of work in those areas (he does background checks for the federal government, I do the driving and administrative stuff).

I am coming to school in Sacramento in January, to the Modoc Railroad Academy, http://www.modocrailroadacademy.com, to get my Conductors License and get on with the railroads here in CA. I'll be staying over there for about a week before Jan 1st (when classes start) and for the 8 weeks it lasts, plust I'm sure a bit too after until I get hired on. It'll be nice to have EVDO and HSDPA, I hopefully will have broadband where I will be living, but it'll be nice to have this when out and about, and as a backup in my place.

Edit-The Academy's yards and equipment are actually in Pleasant Grove, they do in-class and outdoor work on actual railroad equipment and cars. The railroads are booming, and will need 100,000+ new workers in the next few years to meet the demand, I will be one of those

Well, Welcome to the area, which you already know pretty well, nice to have fellow hofo'ers close. I get spoiled by living near a "metro city" EVDO, EDGE(which im on right now BTW damn good) I get all the goodies pretty quick

Posted by: ilvla2

Thanks! Yeah, we go down there somewhat often, and I lived in Sac for a year (on Marconi Ave, between Watt and Fulton). I really like the area a lot, it'll be nice to be back for a while, and I may be staying there, depending on where in CA I get hired on. I am hoping to get on with Amtrak or Amtrak California, but somebody like Metrolink (SoCal), Coasters, Metrorail, SacLightRail, Caltrain etc. would be great too. I'll be very happy with a freight railroad too, though passenger trains offer better hours (well, except for the long distance trains that is, they run all day and all night)

We've got EDGE (via Edge Wireless) and 1X (via Verizon and US Cellular) here, and Edge Wireless is working on deploying UMTS/HSDPA soon too. Verizon said they plan to have it in all of their areas by the end of next year, we'll see I guess I have an EVDO phone, the V3m, now I need a HSDPA phone, that LGCU500 looks nice, what do you think? I would love to have a 3G enabled PDA phone, I LOVE my MDA (using it on Cingular with the custom 2.24 firmware for the 8125), and I spent a good chunk on it, so I will probably have to wait on that. Besides, it does do 802.11G WiFi, and that beats any EVDO or HSDPA in speed. Most hotels we stay in have it for free, and it's in a lot of cities now, I wonder if Sac has plans for a citywide WiFi network? I've got in our house too, very nice to be able to go outside or around the house and use it on my laptop or MDA!

Yeah this area is'nt too bad I really like it also, The Light Rail System is really nice BTW same for Amtrak. For a 3G device wait till the 3G version of the 8125 comes out (i forget the name) and for me an EVDO I use Sprint's Network better built out IMO. That would be pretty cool if Sacramento got a WLAN Network it'd be nice for me (I work in Sac sometimes commuite to SF now and then)

Posted by: ilvla2

Yeah, the light rail and Amtrak (Long Distance and Amtrak California) rock there, with all the thruway busses and trains, you can just about go anywhere in CA or the US from there! I know they are planning on upgrading the depot too, and adding a light rail stop. The city and UP are still getting it worked out though, hopefully they can get it going soon.

I think I found the 8125's replacement-

Actually I spoke with a rep who said HSDPA is live in Orlando, half-way live in Tampa, and the Boca Raton area has been half-way up for a while now. Miami-Dade area is also in the progress he said. He said Orlando and Tampa should be formally announced and put on maps by the latest the end of August. Boca and Miami probably September.

Just wondering.

Does anyone know when Minneapolis/St. Paul/Twin Cities is scheduled to be rolled out?

I just got a nice new CU500 from Chicago and would liek to use the data features. I mean it wont even let me use the regular data network for just download ringtones and such it says Error: Connection Failed

I mean Minneapolis the 2nd largest city in the midwest right after Chicago so i would guess we would get it before Milwaukee or anywhere in Wisconsin.

Several notes regarding Cingular's 3G rollout:

1. Don't worry...it's coming. As long as you live in a decent sized city you will see it inside of a year (most likely). I used to recruit for Cingular, and I placed UMTS network guys all over the United States. They are out there. Have you hugged a Network Engineer or Field Tech today?

2. The size of your city does not prioritize it. I live in Atlanta, which has almost 5 million people, and is Cingular's hometown. We were the 16th market to have our UMTS turned on. You would think that Atlanta would be priorotized, but this is simply not the case.

3. Some of the determining factors in where UMTS is deployed: First of all, Cingular went with Ericsson for their UMTS cabinets and equipment. The only people with that experience are found in Europe and they charge one hell of a lot to come out to America. Cingular only wants to pay their Field Engineers around $30 per hour, whereas these guys get upwards of $50 per hour in Europe for the same job. Pay is also disgusting for Network Engineers, as well. Another determining factor is Stan's goof up for having decided to go with 1900 only then backtracking to include 850, as well. This delayed rollout in Atlanta at least one year, and other markets as well, I'm sure. Another determining factor is the local network backbone that connects to the PSTN. UMTS and HSDPA/HSUPA require a lot of bandwidth, and therefore a lot of t-1, t-3, ds0, etc.

4. One final issue has to do with the phone manufacturers. European UMTS runs on the 2100 mhz spectrum. American UMTS runs on the 850 and 1900 spectrum. This will change when the FCC auctions off the 2100 mhz spectrum this month (August), but Cingular will likely not try to purchase it. T-Mobile will definately purchase it. The point being, that manufacturers will have to come out with phones that are aimed at Cingular users due to the spectrum issue. Simply put, they won't be usable on any other UMTS networks (unless they make a UMTS tri band that operates on all three spectrums). You can thank Motorola's Ron Garriques for the fact that we will not likely see a UMTS phone for Cingular from Motorola for some time. Phone availability is a huge issue, and currently only LG and Nokia have UMTS models for sale at your local Cingular store.

5. Last but not least, lest we forget: AT&T and BellSouth (the co-owners of Cingular Wireless) are merging at the end of the year. This will undoubtedly screw rollout up. Former AT&T Wireless customers remember that UMTS was supposed to come out in 2004, but was shelved due to the merger with Cingular.

I hope that this answers some questions...

--Porphyry.

Wow.. That was depressing.. You really had me excited there and then to drop the ball on me at the end with that merger stuff..

Posted by: kevink1

I guess one question is what, for Cingular, is a decent sized city. Does 100K count? 200K?

I wouldn't think that the Bellsouth/ATT merger should affect things like this, since it is a merger of parent companies. Doesn't affect cell phone, unless they go off on a 6 month tangent upgrading stores again with a new name, and have to get rid of all the unsold phones with Cingular branding.

Posted by: ilvla2

In this part of the state, 30,000 is considerd a decent sized city

Posted by: porphyry

Jackaroe....

Of course it is depressing. My best friend lives in South Dakota. I have no GSM coverage on a 900 1800 1900 phone from Kansas City to Rapid City, South Dakota. UMTS will be worse. I just bring the facts as they are presented to me. Best of luck, and don't forget to cheers your bartenders.

Posted by: hitechy

Nokia doesn't have any UMTS phones for Cingy. They all got canceled . It will suck if T-Mobile starts to get all the good phones because it is easier for manufacturers to make. You know, ATT has to be the most screwy company of all time. Every baby bell or joint venture gets messed up. What I mean is baby bells seem to always stir up trouble. This merger will be a very interesting thing. Very interesting. You can bet that the new at&t will be rolling out some new services that incorporate the three screens as they say, cell phone, TV, and computer. I'm hoping for a revival of at&t wireless. I know DoCoMo is what pushed ATT to innovate before, but I'm hoping we'll get that same innovation from the new at&t, making cingular like how ATT wireless was before the merger.

Just got home from vacation to find that 3G is alive here in Columbus (Ohio). It seems to be a little flakey, so I'm guessing it's still in testing...

Posted by: Jakaroe808

I know a lot of the people in this thread may not yet have a HSDPA device yet but are in an HSDPA market.. Have any of you been noticing EDGE becoming flaky? I have never had a problem loosing EDGE at home (I average 120-140kbps) but as of late I'll be streaming music and the connection will drop. I'll go to relaunch the feed but my 8125 can not reconnect. It kicks back on after anywhere from a minute to 5 minutes (5 being rare).. Could this be signs of tower upgrades?

I was told Fairfeild County CT had 3G already. My area of CT doesn't have it yet, but the Cingular store in my town that I stopped in, was carrying the LG CU500. I was almost tempted to pick it up. But I am gonna wait about month and see what other 3G phones come out.

I suspect SLO won't be a huge rush... it shouldn't be too hard though. Cingular has only PCS (1900MHz) there. No AMPS to worry about. Cell One SLO has the cellular license there, and there isn't a whole lot of area to deploy.

Nothing in TPA as of last week, at least not near the Riverwalk/north side of town. Edge only. I locked the U860 into 3G only mode and nada. ZX10 never sniffed any 3G either.

That's excellent news. As I am also in the Sacramento area, I'm curious what specific area you are talking about. I'm out near Roseville, and work near Rancho Cordova, neither of which seems to be showing 3G service on my new shiney TyTN.

I figure these things are probably done tower by tower, but don't really know what to expect.

Thanks!

You should clarify what you mean by "all". Do you mean "all the built up areas"? I mean, there are parts of CT where Cingular doesn't have any coverage (some very rural parts of the north west). Do you mean "when will Cingular have coverage equal to their GSM coverage"? That will take a LONG time. Even look at Verizon and Sprint. Neither of them are within a year of matching their voice build-out with 3G. Also, for all three carriers, rural areas will be a very low priority since there aren't likely to be a lot of customers there (unless they're going to be in a DSL/Cable-less area where there would be a lot of customers that the carriers probably don't want because of high-bandwidth primary connection issues) and 3G rollout won't change voice coverage. Cingular and everyone else will get to them, but they definitely aren't a priority and they're going to do built-up areas around the country before wiring rural areas.

What I think you mean is when will all the cities (Hartford, New Haven, etc.) have 3G rather than just the part that is NY Metro. Is that correct?

I went into a Cingular store in Cromwell, and saw the LG CU500 phone to my surprize. I asked the agent if there was 3G here, and he told me it was in Fairfeild county only as of right now. Althougth my area must be getting close to flipping the switch, since their already selling the phone here.

Haven't really gone too far yet... but if you're familiar with Columbus, on the north side it at least extends well past I-270 all around, up into the Polaris area. I'm sure it's the same south of the city, I just don't go down there much.

Are you kidding me? That post doesn't tell me anything. 3G is "live" but flakey and still in testing? They're not selling any 3G phones in this market, so I was looking for a more definitive roll-out date.

I'm in zip code 60110. As of a week ago we now have 3g. I saw a map with 3g coverage about 3 weeks ago that showed I was in a 3g area, when in fact I had to drive 8 miles in any direction to get 3g. One morning I just woke up and 3g was here. Still using my old 32k sim and no way in hell am I getting a 3g sim...

No need to be a jerk. You asked when Columbus is going to have UMTS/HSPDA and I'm telling you that Columbus has HSDPA live now. If you wanted to know about the phones in stores, you should have stated that. On that note, I don't work for Cingular so I couldn't tell you when the stores will start selling the phones... my guess would be fairly soon since the network now exists here.

Posted by: Gator5000e

Dumb question but how can you tell when 3G goes live in your area? I bought a new Dell notebook that has a Cingular UMTS/HSDPA internal card but I don't want to activate it until it is live in Orlando. I went into my local company store and asked and they said yes Orlando is live 3G with the EDGE network. So I'm not sure how to tell. Thanks for any advice or thoughts.

I dont understand cingular either.

and yet we have no 3g and I have seen nothing about the rollout here....

They are all probably big cities or highly populated areas

Well, I guess that's one good thing being serviced by a regional carrier, a Cingular Affiliate and network member to boot, Edge Wireless. I know they are working on getting 3G out to their market areas (CA,OR,ID,WY), but it would be nice to have 3G on native Cingular in the rest of rural and small/mid sized town California (everything from Sonoma County north to the OR border, and everything from Woodland north to the OR border) that I travel to

My market is currently in testing and I'm generally always on the 3G network. I haven't noticed 3G go down. If I happen to leave 3G coverage, the hand-off to GSM works like a champ.

Hopefully Charlotte,NC will have all the equipment to go live and a cingular sales rep said the techs were testing 3g in the area last week.

Greensboro-October

These Dates are comfirmed and as of right now a set launch date.

However, they may get delayed

I wish somebody knew when they'd launch north of SF and Sacramento!

Sacramento is in testing phase, no ETA

Posted by: ilvla2

How about north of of SF, into Marin, Napa and Sonoma Counties? Or north of Sacramento, into Colusa, Glenn, Tehama, Shasta, Butte, Sutter and Yuba Counties? I'm in Redwood Valley in Mendocino County, about 115 miles north of SF, and we're served by Cingular's Affiliate, Edge Wireless, and Edge is working on deploying UMTS/HSDPA in their markets (N.CA, S.OR, SE ID, W.WY). I am pretty sure they are testing it here, though I have no UMTS phone to find out

Edit-Cities in those Cingular areas I mentioned are San Rafael, Novato, Larkspur, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Windsor, Healdsburg, Cloverdale, Williams, Williows, Corning, Cottonwood, Anderson, Red Bluff, Redding, Chico, Oroville, Gridley, Live Oak, Marysville, Yuba City and Colusa.

Lol true! I guess with WiFi it's not as big of a deal as it used to be though, I have free WiFi at all of the hotels (Best Western, Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn, etc) I stay it, and that's even in small towns like Yreka and Weaverville. We travel all over rural NorCal, in fact, we just got back from 3 day/2 night business trip to Yreka and Redding this evening, and we had 802.11G WiFi in both places, very cool! I expect Edge Wireless (who is working on deploying UMTS in their areas) to get 3G out before Cingular, Verizon or T-Mobile ever do outside of Sac or SF.

It isn't turned on yet, and I am 100% positive on that. I passed through Bridgeport last week, and no 3G icon to be seen. There still working on the sites in CT, and the switch should be flipped on in October.

Anybody know Cingy's plan for expanding coverage in Jersey?

Posted by: stevOh

In Case anyone cares about Detroit. We are scheduled to launch 3G on the 29th. They loaded the UMTS coverage overlay on our mapping tool and it looks MUCH more robust than the legacy 3G that former ATTWS had deployed. Back in Jan we had a working fully functional (albeit small foot print) for 3G - speed and sound qulity was supurb. It worked for about 2 weeks and they decided to change vendors and replaced all the equipment. Well its looking like they are almost done but the 3G maps I pulled up look fantastic! We are all pretty excited about it.
