Help V635 + Phone Tools

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi, I am having soo much trouble using mobile phone tools it's crazy! My main concern is that it is NOT recognizing my phone. When I plug it in, it searches for it, and this hardware update came up and now when I look under "Device Manager" is Control Panel (talking about my PC here) it says my V635 is a "Motorola Modem". Why can't phone tools/my comouter recognize my V635! Any suggestions? I have phone tools 4.0 too so I don't understand what could be causing this.

Have you tried updating the drivers?

First I'd ininstall the MPT software, reboot the PC, then re-install the Moto Phone Tools.

Don't plug in the phone to the USB cable until the software asks you to though. Once it establishes the modem/cable connection you should be OK.

what version of phone-tools are you running?

something to try would be to open up device manager (click start, right click on 'my computer', select properties, select the hardware tab, click device manager) check to see if there is a entry for "Motorola USB Modem" if there is right click it and select "update drivers" when it asks you to specify a location navigate to

C:\Program Files\Motorola Phone Tools\Inf\W2K_XP_USB_Drivers

If its showing as a motorola usb modem, then its set up correctly. The next step is to query the modem and see if you get a response. If you do, then manually set up MPT and choose the v635 as your phone type.

Also, tried what you suggested Elbobino and it didn't find any updates...man this is soo frustrating

WAIT! I just realized something. In "device manager", when I go to Motorla Modem - under "location" it says Location 0 (Motorola Phone (V635)) Does this help my situation?

Didn't work...oh well, I guess I'm screwed. Thanks for your help everybody.

Im having the same issue. It recognized it once, but I couldnt transfer ringtones over, so I screwed around a little bit, and now it doesnt work.

Try getting the latest version of MPT if you don't already. I believe Version 4.0 is the latest.

I have MPT. 4.0.

My phone is a V325.

Try some of the downloads in this link:

http://www.motomodders.net/Default.aspx?tabid=77

and

http://www.motox.info/showthread.php?t=92

The first link has drivers to the "Win2K/WinXP Motorola DriverPack, Version 2.9"

Installing that may help to get your phone modem working.

If all else fails try loading one of the versions of P2K Tools from either link. It's a little more technical, but if you can get it to work, you will be able to get into the system directories and access, change and/or delete locked files you can't normally acccess even with MPT, including wallpapers, screensavers, ringtones, etc.

I got mine to work.

First I had to download a file called DriverTools.zip. I installed those. Then MPT recognised my phone no problem. I then proceeded to Seem edit my phone, went into MPT and switched my phone to V323 and it now works fine.

I have no idea what happened to me. I switched USB ports and all of a sudden it had recognized it. Thing is this - MPT doesn't show what my phone looks like - says I only have 60 percent battery life when I JUST charged it, and I'm lost to as how the hell I transfer music (mp3's) to it. BLAST MPT!

Did you ever tell us what version you have? If you have an old enough version, it wouldn't have a picture of a V635. Surely one wouldn't expect it to display a phone that didn't exist at the time... That or you need to redetect the phone - open MPT, then select Setup->Connect a different phone, then disconnect your phone before you click Next. Plug your phone in when prompted to do so.

I don't know why everyone has such problems with this software. It has worked just fine for me with our V220, V400, V551, V557 and V635.

A big part of USB problems is NOT following the directions as far as connecting the device in question. Most software will tell you when it's ready for you to plug the device in, MPT is no exception. If you plug it in before the software is ready, you're going to have problems. Same thing with many scanners, cameras, etc.

I have 4.0 - which is weird because it SHOULD show a picture, shouldn't it?

Also.. you dont need mpt to transfer music on the v635. Set the usb settings to mass storage and just send the files you want straight to the memory card.. There really is no need for mpt's unless you want to back-up your contacts..

What I wanted to accomplish out of MPT is create your own ringtones, set up a wallpaper of whatever I want from an existing image on my computer, and I heard, even though you don't REALLY need MPT to transfer music, it's good to use it because it condences, doesn't it?

MPT 4.04b (I think??) has a bug - they neglected to update the V635 skin to the new format. MPT 4.21 has the correct skins, but breaks something else. I'll zip up the skins and PM you.

As far as transferring MP3's to the transflash, if I'm doing a mass move, I'll remove the card and put it in an SD reader before I'd consider putting the phone into memory card mode. Memory card mode is WAY too slow. Remember, on a V635 the transflash shares the bus with the camera, which is SLOWWWWW...

MPT also saves wear and tear on one's thumbs - I send SMS all day using my PC keyboard

It also takes care of ringtones for you. Yes, you can use other tools to copy ringtones, but then you have to reset the database, blah blah blah. PITA, if you have lots of ASSIGNED ringtones cuz you have to reassign them all...

A Couple more things. Does your phone have to be connected to "data/fax" or can it be on trans when you use MPT?

Posted by: Alpha43

yes, I actually just updated to 4.21a and now it has a different picture for my A1200.
To edit ringtones i used Cool edit pro 2. But now i dont use it anyone. since its not needed anymore for the a1200.

From what I've gathered from various posts, it seems that MPT can work in either data/fax or memory card. However, since p2k programs need the phone in data/fax mode, it's best to just leave it in data/fax mode.
