So I took the plunge and moved from my pc notebook to a new macbook. This of course creates complications for using my windows mobile smartphone (cingular 2125) with the device, so I've been doing some research and found the following resources that I would like to share with people. I'm also interested in hearing about the experiences of others who use a windows mobile smartphone with a mac.

To sync I'm going to use the missing sync, who's newest 2.5 version support windows mobile 5:
http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_windowsmobile.php

I found this page which explains how to use your windows mobile device as a bluetooth modem with a mac:
http://justinblanton.com/2006/01/ma...bluetooth-modem

Some things that I have not been able to find are:

1) I can't find any software that is the equivelent of rubber stamped data and will allow me to sync files between my mac and the phone
2) I can't find a usb driver for the mac that will allow me to use my phone as a modem when it is connected via usb

Anyhow, my macbook will be here next week and I will be writing a review about using it with a windows mobile smartphone, so keep an eye out for that.

This is good stuff.

I've been considering making the switch over to Mac as well, and was concerned about how this would affect my ability to sync my smartphone.

If you go to this link www.pocketmac.net they have a sync program to allow you to sync with a mac. I used it at the office where I have a macbook and I used activesync at home on my window box. It works fine in both places. As far as your other question I do not know.

Pocketmac does not support Windows Mobile 5 devices.

Go with MissingSync. I've used their product for years with different devices and the software and support is top notch. I just started using the new version for WM5 devices and it is great. Plus, it's the only option at present.

Read the email text below from PocketMac and it give you the correct information about PocketMac.

From The Desk Of:
PocketMac's Lauren Samuels
Hello,

Lauren from PocketMac® here. I'm writing to you today about Windows Mobile 5 and Intel Duo updates. First and foremost, I very much want to apologize for the delay in writing to you on this. We've been pretty heads-down working on this software and today, I'm finally able to give you a meaningful update.

But just to let you know, we've spent the last 7 months working on adding Windows Mobile 5 and Intel Duo support. The problem we encountered is that Microsoft radically changed Activesync (the protocol used to connect to Windows Mobile devices) and we've been engineering solutions around these changes. As you can imagine, it's been a challenge to solve the problems this created.

And because we've been so singularly focused on this, regular emails about our progress got away from us. Basically, it's very difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel until you're almost at the end. Again I want to apologize for that and I've tried to make up for it with a little "thank you"...

What is your "thank you"?

Well as a "thank you" for your extraordinary patience and loyalty to PocketMac, we've created an update of the Macintosh theme that everyone loves. When you download the PocketMac for Windows Mobile™ update, you'll automatically get a brand-new theme to make your Pocket PC or Smartphone look like a miniature Macintosh. I've included screenshots below...

The New PocketMac Theme™
(to be included free with the free PocketMac for Windows Mobile update)

Now, for the answers to the questions you have...

Will the Windows Mobile 5/Intel Duo update be free?

Yes, the update will be completely free. There will be no charge whatsoever to update your application with the latest build.

What is your timeline for a release?

We are currently beta-testing our solution in-house. If all goes well and we expect it to, we will have a beta for registered customers in 1-2 weeks. After thorough customer testing, we expect to have a commercial solution in the next 2-4 weeks after that.

I have an older Pocket PC or Smartphone; it's running Windows Mobile 2002 or 2003. Will this update cover me?

Yes, this update will allow you to sync all Windows Mobile 2002, 2003 and WM5 devices on an Intel or any Mac running 10.3.9 or above. All you need to do is select your device during installation and the rest is easy. And again, this will be completely free.

I have PocketMac Phone but I also have PocketMac Pro. Will you be combining these two products?

Yes! The update will not only add the ability to sync Windows Mobile 5 devices and Intel Duo support but it will allow our customers to sync both Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile Smartphones on the same Macintosh computer with only one software package. What's more, the product will be changing its name to "PocketMac for Windows Mobile™" and will be sold on our website with this new name.

I have PocketMac Lite. Any chance of getting full features like Entourage synching?

Yup!! The update will automatically upgrade your version of PocketMac Lite to the full features of our PocketMac for Windows Mobile. This means you'll get to sync Entourage data to your Windows Mobile device, synching Daylite and much more.

Thank you for your patience and loyalty,

Lauren

If the "correct" reference is aimed at me, I should have said that Pocketmac does not currently support WM5.

This is good news that the light at the end of the tunnel is finally coming. More options is always a good thing. I'd be curious to see a comparison between the two programs when the final version is realeased.

Missing Sync is the best prodect for a mac. I have two versions currently on my MAC book Pro; Palm and WM5.

I've tried the Missing Sync v.2.5. it seems to work OK BUT:

it doesn't sync contact photos with Entourage.

The iTunes sync function will only store files in main memory, not on the storage card which renders the function pretty useless.

I submitted an email about the contact photos not syncing, but I've been ignored (no reply for 1 week).

Yeah, after using the new missing sync for WM5 for a couple weeks now, I realize it has some things that could use improvement.

However, my experience with Markspace is that they are very good at getting updates out in a timely manner.
