Cingular and PUSH technology

Has anyone used Cingular's PUSH technology with Exchange and Active Sync for e-mails and such?

Basically our BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) licenses are running out and since we have had more problems with the BB7100 than I would think about right now, we (IT at the company I work for) are thinking of going to Windows Mobile platform. No need for BES licenses and its a Windows platform so it will allow us to use tools from MS and such.

Some time ago we demo'ed a unit from Cingular, but it used txt msgs to deliver e-mail to the unit, which sucks b/c its slow and you have to pay for txt msgs. Has Cingular released its PUSH technology yet and how does it work in a corp setting?

The biggest factor is the speed at which the e-mails are delivered to the unit. Using BES with Exchange the e-mails arrive almost instantly, having that on a Windows unit would be great.

Anyone implement or use Cingular's PUSH with Exchange?

Cingular 8125 supports PUSH WITHOUT the charge for text messages and IMO, it's the best thing since slice of bread.
I'm system administrator and we have near 100 employees, about half of the mobile email devices are windows based
and they are so easy to setup and don't cost any extra licences if you've already paid for Exchange licence.
All we do is go to ActiveSync on phone, select Add Source, put in OWA address, user name, password, and we are done, couldn't be easier!

Not trying to be a pest, but do you know how long it takes for an e-mail to arrive on the handheld?

Thats good to hear. I guess we have to get Cingular out here again, b/c as I said before e-mails only worked with txt msging.

Thanks for your replies.

I know this is an old thread but I'm considering getting the Blackjack to take advantage of the discount my company has with Cingular. Is this some Cingular technology of is the Microsofts MSFP? I ask because my office runs Exchange 2000 and MSFP requires 2003 SP2.

I'm currently using a Treo 700W and it is "push" via SMS.

Thanks

No...MSFP is what allows push email. If your treo doesn't have this update then you need a ROM update of some sort. You can find info about this on Palms site I believe. Also the exchange server that you are using must have Service Pack 2 installed and Push Email activated to used Push Based email.

I use it on my 8525. Its great. Arrives on my phone before it does on my desktop at work.

My company doesn't have Exchange 2003 w/ SP2. My Treo has MSFP but I still need "push" via SMS because of the Exchange server. Does Cingular offer unlimited text for this purpose?

No not for that purpose but you can get a unlimited TXT message plan which will solve your problem of getting charges PPU for txt messages.

I you don't XPress mail, you can use this.
XPress Mail Personal Edition is free with any unlimited data plan. It uses an SMS trigger to tell it to sync mail. These SMS triggers are silent (Xpress mail intercepts then before they get to the SMS app) and you are NOT billed for them as SMS.
You'll have to run an email "redirector" on your PC at work and leave it running 24/7 to get mail. This is, of course, the major problem that most people have with it.

I have a Blackberry from work, and I have a Treo 650 as my personal phone. I actually prefer XPress Mail on my Treo 650 than to use the Blackberry for email, if you can believe that.

Just register to create an account. Download the software.
You won't be billed for this, it's not tied in to any billing system.

Anyway, it's just a suggestion for people who don't have MS Direct Push available to them.
The PUSH isn't as instant, but it does deliver mail to you within about 90 seconds under normal conditions.

Historically it hasn't been totally reliable. But it has improved over time and I rarely have delays or outages.

Does XPressmail Network edition still exist? I read up on it a year ago, i think cingular maintains the server and what not. Its for businesses, you may want to see about that.
