i580 GPS (NMEA out) and laptop nav software

I understand that I can hook up my i580 to my laptop with a serial cable, then use the NMEA-out feature from the phone and use the (phones) GPS antenna with my (laptop) GPS software.
Has anyone done this yet? I read that it updates every second, can't imagine the mapping would be very smooth. How many satelites will it pick up?
Is this possible using BT instead of the cable?
