Just got my 6700.....and its driving me nuts.....

Helllo!!


I just got my 6700....and i must say....its quite complicated...I have a few questions and I was just wondering if someone could help me answer a few questions....

1.Is it normal that when I connect on my msn or the internet that its on its EVDO function??? and when I am done, is it ok If i leave it on (will I get charged if nothing is loading etc?) or is it best taht I maually turn it off ???

2.On an average how much could I surf & Check mail and etc with a 30 MB plan??? (imma comp-noob can someone tell me how many KB in a MB pls?)

3. Yesterday I was testing on my video cam, I recorded 2 video clips and I saved teh video just to see if the replay works easily ....for some reason I could delete the second video but the first one...when i try to delete it some screen popped up says "Cannot Delete "video_000001" There has been a sharing violation.
Tge source or destination file maybe in used". I dont knwo what to do...its not playiong on anything else....the window media is closed....

4.Is there anyway I can change the back ground??

5.Is there anyway I can add a password on specific files instead of the whole system when not used for certain amount of time (i find it very dangerous trying to press the little letter while drving)?? or is there anyway to modify it so that I can dial out without having to press in a password...???

5. What is the difference between the Wi-Fi,EVDO and active sync???


6. Can I download games for free???

7.Also is there any way yo put a password on my email account and msn...just so when prople are doodling with my account that they can't log onto my email....

Probably could answer lots of this by going to ppc6700users.com/forums.

However here are my quick answers.
1. You are only charged for what you transfer over your limit.. leaving the connection open is not a problem, however if you are in a 1X area you may miss incoming calls, where as EVDO should automatically suspend and allow incoming calls.

2. Not much, it depends on where you surf. If have an unlimited 3 month data trial, check your use regularly on your providers website.. You didn't state who your provider was..

3. Not sure why that happened.. Try soft resetting (rebooting) the phone by sticking the stylus in the little hole in the bottom left of the phone.

4. Start->Settings->Today

5a. Not with the included software.

5b. 1X/EVDO is the high speed internet connection over the cell phone network. You will be charged for its use.

WiFi is used by hotspots and wireless routers in offices and homes. If you use it with your office or home network you will not be charged for data use. Some hotspots are free, but others you need a password and a subscription. Leaving the WiFi enabled will drain the battery, so only turn it one when you are using it.

Active Sync is used when you have your phone connected to a PC with Active Sync installed, it will sync your contact data with Outlook and Exchange.. If your company has an exchange server, the 6700 can sync directly with Exchange via 1x/EVDO if properly configured.


6. Yes, the 6700 is a Windows Mobile PDA it can run almost all WIndows Mobile software.. Try http://www.freewareppc.com/ , I suggest only trying programs that are Windows Mobile 5 compatible.

7. ... I don't use mobile MSN.

The Q also runs windows mobile 5 but the smart phone edition (no touch screen support).. Far less software is available for it.

I already provided a link to http://www.freewareppc.com/ , you generaly do not need to find software that directly saies it works with the 6700. The 6700 should run ANY Windows Mobile 5 compatible software. Most sites and software list what version of Windows Mobile the programs support.

1. My EVDO autmatically logs on........even when i try to logg it off...it still connects on...is this normal??
how do i stop it??


2. MY backlight turns all the wya down on its own.....(no i dont mean when I dont touch it for whatever time I input it in for before it automaticcaly turns off..) i litterally have to go to setup and pull the bar back up....is this normal??? is not I still have 4 days to reuturn the phone for a new one...should I exchange it??

3. Also its started lagging...with program loading....is this normal ( i do not have ANY files saved on it)


4. is there anyway I can put a password on my hotmail account so that it is not open to public viewing for those who are using my phone???

5.WHY DOES MY DELETED EMAIL KEEP COMING BACK IN MY EMAIL BOX....no matter how many time I deleted it....clean out the deleted box.....IT COMES BACK............how do i fix this???

The device will turn it back on and keep it on when it checks your email. You are only charged for what you transfer, so there isn't a problem with it simply being on and ready to go

The power button on the 6700 is confusing... clicking it quickly turns the device on or puts it into standby. Holding the power button for more than 5 seconds toggles the backlight on and off. Most often people find the backlight gets toggled when they carry the 6700 loose in a pocket or purse. Just hold the power button for 5seconds and the backlight should go back to normal.

Windows mobile 5 does not close applications... Don't ask me what microsoft was thinking.

Start-->Settings--System Tab->memory-->Running programs tab.. Just hit stop all and it should improve things.. I recommend getting a 3rd party program that forces programs to close. spb Pocket Plus would be my choice as it also includes a nice tabbed today plugin.

You are probably checking a pop3 email account.. I haven't tried this but I know it causes some people trouble. try doing a search a ppc6700users.com/forums for more info.

You can take that one step further and assign "running programs" to a button. I assigned mine to the voice recorder button since I'll never use that feature and I get instant access to all of the running programs. I can selectively shut down whatever I want or everything. Cost? -0-, zip, nada, zilch - much cheaper than any program you can buy and it takes no room...

I got a couple of questions too.

My phone has began to lag which is probably largely due to the amount of MP3 ringtones I have on my phone. I have bought a 2GB MiniSD card for my phone and am puzzled. Is there a way to make my phone run the mp3 ringers off of my Storage card or do they have to be in the Sounds folder under Application Data?

I do not know how to properly "Shut my phone down". I know that gently tapping the power button will place the phone in standby mode but I want to know how to actually shut it off so that I can reboot it when errors occur.

What programs are available for the phone? And are they possible to run directly from the storage card? Or is this little 2GB P.O.S. only used as a decoy folder for Picture files?

That's pretty much it for me right now. Please hit me back w/ an answer.

Putting your rings on the SD card will make them slower AND possibly cause the phone to hang when a call comes in.

There is no way to completely turn off the phone other than taking the battery out.. You can go into the connection manager and put it in flight mode which will disable the phone receiver, this will prevent in coming calls and save alot of power.

You can run most stand alone apps and games from the an SD card. YOU SHOULD NEVER install today screen plugins or utility apps that run all the time anywhere but main memory.

You can store the following on the SD card without issue.
1. Stand alone applications or games
2. Maps for GPS navigation software.
3. MP3s to listen to via media player
4. Videos to watch via media player
5. Office documents
6. Pictures taken with the camera
7. Videos take with the built in camera
8. Audio recorded with the built in audio memo app.

You could put a mp3 on the SD card, navigate to it with explorer then click hold on it and select "Set as Ringtone" however you risk the following common problems from doing so.
1. The device freezes when a call comes in
2. The device turns on but does not ring for several seconds when a call comes in.

The SD card does not wake up as fast as the rest of the system, this is what causes some problems when putting programs or data like ringtones on it that need to be accessed as soon as the device wakes up.

Also, why does the phone reset my background every time the battery is pulled or it is rebooted or whatever? Memory issues?

well like others said, check how much you use on your monthly invoice, and adjust plan as neccesary...also there are 1000kb in a mb, so 30000kb in your plan.

this is becuase even though you clicked the ok button in the top left corner when in windows media player, that doesn't close it down..its an ok button not a close button, and even some exit buttons in windows mobile 5 don't shut the program down...so the problem you were experiencing is becuase the player had that video loaded, and as such you are not able to delete it...a soft reset does solve this but is not required, simply go into your start > settings > system (tab) > memory...then running programs tab, and highlight and stop windows player

that or you can load a different song or video then that that you are trying to erase.

well some sites like the sprint software store or handango can download and install the program from pocket pc when accessing those sites from the pocket pc...otherwise you can use active sync to install the program...refer to the help file in active sync for specific instructions.

someone already sortof answerd this question...but basicaly what you have to do is stop whatever is automaticaly trying to access the internet from doing so...for example go in your msn mobile options and under hotmail uncheck the box that says download emails automaticaly...because everytime it downloads an email you turn evdo on...however once you do this you won't get alerts to new emails...only when you open up hotmail and send and recieve...

as far as putting a password on hotmail or msn, without other software...i don't know...becuase even when i tell msn to erase my saved passwords, i can still log into messenger and hotmail without inputting a password, so i can't answer this one...however if you go to your msn mobile options, (either launch msn mobile and click option or go to start > settings...under personal tab click msn options)...from there if you click on switch users...it will sign you out completly, and will ask you for a user name and password, however if you log in, even if you don't check save password box...your still logged in...and must switch user again in order for it to ask you for a password again.

yea it is normal for it to sometimes lag, expecialy when its doing something and you open the keyboard...its only a 400mhz processor, and has 94mb or rom memory so it can...like others said, keep the ammount of running programs to as few as possible...and aviod checking for emails more then every 15 minutes...

the deleted email problem doesn't happen to me with pop3, but it maybe how hotmail accesses its email bank, since its not pop3 it may just download your inbox instead of keep tabs on what you delete from your inbox...even for me, if i erase all hotmail emails...and then send recieve...they all come back...i stoped useing my hotmail email on my pocket pc becuase of it...and i havn't found a way to fix it yet...also when you delete something on a pocket pc, you don't delete it off even the pop3 server because you only downloaded the email header, not the whole email...and so deleting is just erasing the header from your inbox on only the pocket pc....also if you active sync with outlook...based on your settings, it will take your outlook inbox and match your pocket pc to it.

the site the one user posted does have some games http://www.freewareppc.com/games/games.shtml and i'm sure there are other free game sites out there...as others have said...do a google search or check this and other forums for answers...

emm it sounds like your today screen is going back to its default theme setup every time...go to start > settings > today, and make sure there is a check box in the use this picture as background option...then browse and select the picture you want...ok out...then try a soft reset and see if that fixed the problem.

is your card formatted, you may have a bad card, it could be your phone is bad...but check if your card is formatted with a computer...i don't know if it should be fat or ntfs, but whatever a normal card is...now you dont' want to format, cause that will erase all your data on that card, but you do want your card to be formatted, which gives the space a file structure. if under

Ok for those that are having issues with there phone here are a few things that will make life a little easier, this stuff is for the Verizon Version for those that have sprint let me know and i will get you the link for your phones as well as this one will prolly mess it up a little bit...

first off install the WM 5.0 update, it makes the unit run faster, when you slide it open it flips the screen instantly no lag, allows connection to Wireless networks better ( still debating that one, let me know your thoughts on this) as well as you cant run ringers off your memory card with no problems what so ever, make sure that you copy the files on your phone that you want to move over because this program does wipe the phone out completly it is like starting over fresh...

other thoughts.....
1. has anyone been having issues with the wireless networks not connecting propperly... i can get my phone to see them but i cannot get it to connect to the network, i have tried changing everything on the phone and the router but still have no luck with that...

2. for those that were having issues deleting files off the phone, you have to close any program that might be using that file, I.E. if you are trying to delete a video that you shot, you need to end the program either using magic button or the internal task manager

3.if you are tying to get your phone to stop dialing up to the network....just hold down the end key and it will hang up the connection for you, you may not be being charged for the connection but it is still using your battery life because it is a dormant call and that is hell for your battery

ill add more later....just got sick of Typing....feel free to shoot me a PM or something if you have questions on the phone, i have no job so all i do is play with the damn thing all day....
