Hello All,
I have just purchased a GD87 on Orange Your Plan 200. I wouldnt mind a little advice.
One of the selling points of the phone was that it contains a POP3 email facility which means that I can access my emails on the move - a great plus for someone who runs their own business!!!
However, the 0845 number that you would use to dial up most Internet companies isnt included in my talk plan and costs an astonishing 10 per min!!! If I check my emails a few times a day, it will all add up. Also, if I want to connect my laptop to the net via IR, it's gonna cost me an absolute bomb!!!
However, Orange offer a deal - £4 a month gets you unlimited WAP access or GPRS access up to 1MB (which they say is a lot - I wouldnt know because I have never been a GPRS user!!!)
I wouldnt mind a little advice as to what people think would be my best option. If I opt for the GPRS deal, can I access my POP3 email through that? Also, if I am using this to connect a laptop to the internet, how many average pages would I get to view before I had eaten up 1MB of information?
If I go for the unlimited WAP offer, can I use it to connect to the normal internet via IR on my laptop therefore getting free internet access? Also, can I read POP3 emails through a wap dial up by just putting in the POP3 email server settings??
Any advice for a technophobe like me would be greatly appreciated!!!
Cheers

One megabyte =
1200 WAP pages or
20 web pages or
100 emails without attachments or
10 emails with a one page attachment or
1 email with a PowerPoint presentation attachment
from Orange website.
You can't connect your latop to the internet with the £4 Access pack as it uses a different 'access point'. You can set up an Orange e-mail account and access that by WAP. You could also try pointing your wap browser to www.mail2web.com/wap as this also allows checking of POP3 accounts via WAP. Try also contacting your ISP as sometimes they can provide a 'normal' number for dialup as then it can come out of your included minutes.

You can not use the WAP £4 per month offer you have taken to dial up internet through your laptop. It is solely for Wap services, not Internet. However if you dial up through your laptop you can use your 200 mins for Internet usage.
The other thing is do what i do, set up outlook to download all your emails, then you can read them and reply offline. You get more moneys worth out of your 300 minutes talkplan that way!
JiggyJaggy

You cant do that - bizarrely,. the local rate numbers that most internet users dial up from arent included in your mins and are charged at 10p per min!

Yer, it is to do with the numbers being "Lo Call" ie local rate from anywhere in the country as opposed to being "Local" numbers.
Because it is a BT thing, they sell "Lo Call" access to ISP's etc then this feature cannot be carried over to the mobile operators.
It is a shame as that was always my plan too, use my ISP dial-up number to collect e-mail and not have to subscripe to any GPRS service.

Just for reference I went over my 1 MB plan with just pictures/ringtones and some misc WAP brosing. If you intend to use the email facility as well as WAP browsing you will most certainly require > 1MB. Just food for thought.
Cheers!

And dont forget if you dont use your full quota of GPRS then your unused allocation rolls over to the following month for three months in total.

Hi all - new here !
Just for your info - Orange GPRS 1mb is now only 2 pound, so if you are on the 0.5mb @ 4 pound - phone Orange up and change the GPRS plan.
Also i have an orange.net e-mail addy and i send and receive directly from my GD87, without going thru WAP. Very handy !!!!
