Tips for reducing reboots in Treo 650

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: johndoe2k4

OK, so I was experiencing a lot of reboots on my Treo 650. Sometimes they were random, sometimes they were caused by certain programs (like Versamail and Opera in my experience).

I have done a few things to put my Treo through a "cleaning process" and now reboots are a rare experience. So for the benefit of others with a Treo (and other Palm devices) here are my tips:

1. Move all 3rd party apps to an SD card. You can always remove the SD if a program on it is crashing your Palm/Treo.

Some 3rd party programs won't run from an SD card (like VolumeCare and Verichat). If you have more than 1 program like this, remove them all, install one and use it for a day or two and once you are sure it is stable, install the next program and so on.

2. Customize your ROM and remove any programs that you don't need. ( I will post links for newbies on how to do this later). In my case I removed a lot of apps that I never use (Quick Tour, Welcome, Sim Services, Bluetooth) and programs that I have found better alternatives for (Real Player -> Pocket Tunes, Versamail -> Snappermail). Also, I removed a lot of foreign language files. You can add certain programs into the ROM but I didn't do that. Lastly, I replaced a special file on the ROM relating to the FAT file system (fatfs.prc) with an updated version (fat32.prc). This doesn't make your Treo more stable but it allows you to use SD cards that are larger than 2 GB which means more space to hold programs. I will add a step by step tutorial on ROM customizing.

3. Always install new programs to your SD instead of the internal memory.

OK, I have been working for many hours and have finished the tutorial on making your own custom ROM that I promised in the first post in this thread. I am trying to find a web host to upload the document and the related files.

Posted by: Kabuk1

You just described exactly what I did to make reboots a rare occurrence for my treo. The only problems I'm having now are Zlauncher crapping out whenever my alarm goes off & butler reminds me to register. I nearly always get a reboot from that >

You could try using http://rapidshare.de , though don't think files are permanent on there. I can't read the terms because the site is blocked from work. Might be good until you can find a more permanent host though.

As promised, I created a site to hold my tutorial that I created for customizing the ROM on your Treo 650. The tutorial is a PDF and is just over 1 MB because I included screenshots.

I am setting up a new site soon which will not go down.

I will let you guys know when its back up

hey guys,

I have created a site to hold the tutorial and the other related files. This site *should* be stable and not go down.

It is: http://hovav.org/treo650/

Thanks for the awesome tutorial. I understand how to get rid of the crap now, but the main reason I am wanting to instal a custom rom is so I can upgrade my BT. I get I need to delete the BT files, and then replace them, but I don't know how to get the replacement/upgraded files.

From a post on tcentral:
BlueTooth files removed to get 1.13 version BT (Assuming lang strip)
BluetoothExt_Device.prc
BtCommVdrvLib_Device.bprc
BtCommVdrvLib_Device_enUS.oprc
BtDeviceLib_Device.prc
BtExgLib_Device.bprc
BtExgLib_Device_enUS.oprc
BtHandsfreePnl_Device.bprc
BtHandsfreePnl_Device_enUS.oprc
BtHsmLib_Device.prc
BtLibLib_Device.bprc
BtLibLib_Device_enUS.oprc
BtManagerApp.bprc
BtManagerApp_enUS.oprc
BtManPnl.prc
BtStackLib_Device.prc
BtTransportLib_Device.bprc
BtTransportLib_Device_enUS.oprc

1.13 files put in ROM (Assuming lang strip)
BtHandsfreePnl_Device_enUS.oprc
BtHsmLib_Device.prc
BtLibLib_Device.bprc
BtLibLib_Device_enUS.oprc
BtManagerApp.bprc
BtManagerApp_enUS.oprc
BtManPnl.prc
BtStackLib_Device.prc
BtTransportLib_Device.bprc
BtTransportLib_Device_enUS.oprc
BluetoothExt_Device.prc
BtCommVdrvLib_Device.bprc
BtCommVdrvLib_Device_enUS.oprc
BtDeviceLib_Device.prc
BtExgLib_Device.bprc
BtExgLib_Device_enUS.oprc
BtHandsfreePnl_Device.bprc

I'm at a loss on how to get these files. Someone asks about it, but there was no response. I figured I'd post on here in case someone else needs help with this problem.

Also, there is a post about "Different RomUpdaterApp.prc's", which I do not understand. Will this help update things such as BT? If not, what purpose does it serve?

Thanks for the help as always! <-- looks like 'rock on' not thumbs up, therefore he shall serve as 'rock on' from now on :P

Posted by: johndoe2k4

Rad Adam,

I'm not sure if I understand what you want to do exactly. Do you want to remove the bluetooth files that come with the Treo 650 and replace them with the bluetooth files that are on the Treo 700 ?

If so, what advantage would you get out of doing that ?

Posted by: Rad Adam

Honestly now after re-reading all of Laker4Life's posts and after reading through anything to do with BT on treocentral, I have no idea what I want to do exaclty.

Laker4Life had sent me links on how to customize my rom, and has also said several times that people sould try customizing their roms to help with their crappy BT connection, as well as saying himself "I instaled a custom rom and now my BT is a lot better."

Basically I want to upgrade my BT to something better/different. I have read though in a couple places on Tcentral that the firmware of the 650s can't handle BT 1.2 (it's at 1.1). Then in other posts I see that people have changed the BT out (as in my post above) to help with car kits having crappy connection.

So basically I'm at a loss on what files to put in to help with this. I don't necessarily want to put the files from the 700, but if that's what their post means, maybe it is. Pretty much anything anyone knows that would upgrade, or slightly change the BT from the current ROM is what I want to try to see if it helps. Hopefully this n00bish post helps you know what I'm trying to do. I'm much more clueless than your specific question shows.

Posted by: Laker4Life

hey guys, unfortunately my home computer is dead... I will try to find the files I used and send them to you... I might have to just download my ROM at work, but either way I'll get them...

Posted by: Rad Adam

Thanks man.

Posted by: johndoe2k4

Hi all,

I have updated my tutorial and made it into a web page instead of Adobe PDF

I recommend that anyone who has downloaded my tutorial in Adobe PDF form
erase it and check out the updated version with some new info on it.

Sweetness.

You should consider moving your link to your first post with an edit, as to give easy access for people coming to the sticky for the first time. Thanks for all your hard work!

Posted by: johndoe2k4

rad adam

what do you mean move my links to the first post ?

I dont think i can edit my older posts. it seems when i post after 1 or 2 days i cant edit my post anymore.

if there is a way to do it then please let me know

Posted by: Rad Adam

Yeah, I see that too, I can't edit my old ones.

I would PM an admin. I'm sure they'll help you out and put that link in there so new kids don't have to scroll down and search for it.

I have to say johndoe2k4, I really appreciate individuals like yourself who have spent some of their valuable time figuring this out and sharing "it".

I recently purchased the 700p. Do you know if your "tutorial" will work with this model as well?

Thanks,

GTB

gaakbecker

in sort the answer is yes and no.

I asked someone who is a lot more familiar with rom customizing than me.

He explained that although the process should probably be the same, the rom tool that i mentioned in my tutorial will not work with the 700p because of all kinds of changes to the 700p. He said that someone was working on a rom tool that will work with the 700p. I'll let you know if I hear anything else in the future.

What's the difference between removing apps through the ROM and just uninstalling it with my Uninistall Manager?

Posted by: johndoe2k4

well

When you uninstall an application with palms uninstall manager, you cannot delete an application that is on the rom. You can only uninstall applications that you have previously installed. when you remove apps from the ROM you are basically removing a "built-in" application that comes with the palm.

Think of all the built in programs that the palm comes with when you buy a brand new palm and turn it on for the first time. Those apps are on the rom. thats why we customize it.

Great tutorial. Thank you for all the good work. I do have a question, does this void the warranty?

Posted by: mbranscum

I've tried hitting the reset button and quick sync button at the same time, but the device just reboots. I can't get the rainbow screen...

any suggestions???

EDIT: Well, I got the rainbow screen but never could get the software to connect. I gave up.

Posted by: johndoe2k4

Torontonian,

I am not 100% sure but I don't think it actually voids the warranty. you arent opening up the device. if you ever have to have the phone serviced and they ask about why app xyz is missing then just play dumb....

Posted by: johndoe2k4

mbranscum,

I've occasionaly had problems getting romtool to connect to my phone. heres my suggestion

1. Exit romtool

2. Reset your phone by holding the hotsync button and pressing the reset button at the same time. If you don't see the rainbow screen do this step again. make sure to press hotsync button and reset at the EXACT same time.

3. start romtool.

Thank you so much for this! This is awesome! I'm gonna try this as soon as I get home.

I do have a question though... I want to start completely from a hard reset to get rid of everything. However, I want to keep my calendar, memos, contacts, and to do list. How can I get rid of everything else and except these?

Thanks!

Posted by: johndoe2k4

Just so you know, a hard reset will not affect your ROM. it will only remove anything you installed on the RAM. I don't understand why you want to do a hard reset but heres how you do it.

ok before you customize your ROM do this:

1. Perform a a hotsync

2. Make a copy of your profile folder (Usually in C:\Program Files\palmOne\Yourhotsyncname) to some other safe location as a back. Optional but highly recommended.

3. Perform a hard reset as listen on http://mytreo.net/treofaq/Treo650Resetting

4. Customize your ROM as per my instructions

5. Before you do hotsync again right click on the hotsync icon in the system tray and choose custom

6. Do this for calendar, memos, contacts, and to do list:
Double click on the name in the list (ex. calendar)
click on the radio button "Desktop overwrites handheld"

7. Perform a hotsync

Posted by: TL_1981

I just did the whole customizing ROM thing and wow is it much faster. It still rebooted on me once in the last 24 but much better than 8 in the previous 24.

thanks alot for the tip

Hi johndoe2k4,

Just wondering if your friend found an "answer" to the rom tool for the 700p. I've searched endlessly, but haven't found a solution yet. Thanks in advance.

Check out the 700p forums at TreoCentral forums. I'm sure that there will be a lot of people who may know more there. A lot of of them have done the custom ROM there.

I spent hours there earlier today, but couldn't find "it". There is a lot of talk about one, but in the end, the threads I found ultimately ended up saying the 650 ROM may work regarding some issues and there isn't one yet for the 700p.

Again...thanks to all for the help.

Okay, so I think I'm stupid or something. I can't seem to get past step 7 of downloading the ROM. I get the multicolored screen in step 6, and then it loads and everything (it found the driver).

Now w/ step 7, when i click on RomTool.exe an application error occurs saying:
"the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate application."

My Treo won't go to that white screen...

Any help would be appreciated!

It's my home PC, and I'm pretty sure I'm the administrator on it, but I'll double check. Did anyone else have a problem w/ that step?

Also, johndoe2k4, is there anything else I can possibly use for the ROM or anything else to do in order to cut back on the resets. My phone resets almost everytime I'm two minutes into any call!?! I called palmone and they said since I'm out of the 1 year period, I'd have to spend $200 to get it fixed! I wanted to tell them to kiss my @$$!

Thanks a lot for all your help, I greatly appreciate it!

Posted by: johndoe2k4

well the best advice id have then is to

1. Remove all 3rd party apps from the ROM if there are any.

2. Reflash your firmware with the standard firmware from http://www.palm.com/us/support/down...treo650updater/ and see if that helps.

i did a hard reset, and tried it before syncing... still issues. i wonder if a zero out reset might help. oh yeah, does a zero out reset return the phone to locked mode? currently it's a cingular branded unlocked phone...

thanks...

no it wont lock your phone

I actually removed all of my third party apps and put on only the ones that I needed one by one to make sure it would not mess up on me but still my phone reboots after every phone call. It stopped the random reboots but I can't stop the reboots every time my phone calls end. any ideas?

Just as a follow up, when I was getting set to update my ROM in August and I was in my local Sprint store getting a new Treo as usual (2.5 jack breaks all the time ). I asked one of their techs if he knew what updating the ROM was and asked him if I did it would they notice and be pissed and think it was my fault that the phone broke later on, on something unrelated.

He assured me that they know when you do stuff to your phone that's going to hurt it, and updating the ROM certainly was okay. In fact he said that he couldn't see how he could complain about it since it will most likely reduce trips there for Treos.

So, at least Sprint has given the go for the most part on updating the ROM and removing apps that are unnecessary. Hopefully this will apply generally to all carriers and their techs.

Posted by: Giobatta

Does anyone knows how to get rid of the "welcome" icon/program on the TREO?
johndoe2k4 mentioned in his message that he erased "Welcome" but in the tutorial file list it is not mentioned. Browsing the ROM files I am not able to identify the possible files.

Posted by: johndoe2k4

Giobatta

which welcome do you mean ?

I didn't mention that in the tutorial.

if you can tell me what you are referring to maybe I can help you

Johndoe2k4

Posted by: Giobatta

Hi johndoe2k4

My meaning is the WELCOME (icon is a door opening) program on the PALM OS, the one that let you calibrate and follow tutorials.
You mentioned it in you original thread (... my case I removed a lot of apps that I never use (Quick Tour, Welcome, Sim Services, Bluetooth) and .... ) not in the tutorial.
The file program is visible in the device rom (RESCO Explorer) not in the downloadable files.
I continued my search and I believe it is not possible to cancel it because generated by the SETUP application.

Posted by: johndoe2k4

which file(s) are you referring to exactly that you can see in the rom ?

please tell me the exact name so i can look into it

Posted by: Giobatta

These the files in ROM device:

Welcome.appl
Welcome_CROW.cCLib
Welcome_enUS.ovly

Posted by: johndoe2k4

ok heres what my advice is to get rid of the welcome app

Follow my tutorial (link is on the 1st post of this thread) and when you get to the point where you remove files from the rom, remove those 3 files from the rom. make sure to keep them somewhere on your computer just in case. After you've customized your rom let me know if that fixed the problem. in fact, id recommend you make sure theres no other files in the rom that begin with the name welcome.

let me know if this helps.

Will this method work on my good old Treo 600? I need to be able to use the larger SD cards more than anything else, but getting rid of some of the "junk" in ROM sure sounds tempting.

Try following my tutorial and see if it can read your phone. if it does, chances are that it will work.

Not only does the phone preferences allow a 3 minute delay setting for automatic dimming, but also RealPlayer preferences has a separate control. I made both of mine 3 minutes and it did make quite an improvement

Posted by: GQBalla

oh wow - i just tried to do this custom rom on my treo. and damn was i scared. i must have done something wrong because when i uploaded back my edited rom the phone would non stop reset itself........

i uploaded back the original and now all is fine... definatly scary especially when you have only had the phone only 24 hours.

Posted by: GQBalla

does anyone have a custom rom i could use?

Posted by: thesheqq

Ok I am at the same the rainbow screen but cannot get my screen to go white, nor do I get any ROM tool console to open when clicking on the exe fil just an error message help!

Posted by: johndoe2k4

what is the error message ?

Posted by: KingCody

I have a similar issue...

I can get to the "rainbow screen" with no problem, and I can run RomTool.exe with no problem (I don't recieve any error messages). I:

1. installed the bootloader drivers.
2. pressed the reset button and the hotsync button to enter the bootloader ("rainbow") screen
2a. a popup window on the PC says 'found new hardware', then says "installed and ready to use'
3. clicked on RomTool.exe (it launches fine, does not ask for any drivers)

...but that's as far as I can get. the treo never goes to the white screen and RomTool says "waiting for phone". I have tried this multiple times but I can't seem to get past the rainbow screen. what am I doing wrong?

Posted by: digitard

Worked perfect for me. Ran it from WinXP MCE 2005 and it connected/downloaded/uploaded just fine.

Thanks again!

Posted by: bricker

My Rom tool does not come up, it just spikes the processor to max usage and does nothing. When I get the rainbow screen it reads "Boot load v. 0.24" instead of "v. 0.22" in your (johndoe2k4) tutorial. Is there an updated Rom tool to be had anywhere? Any suggestions from anyone?

Posted by: rrroszko

whenever i play/view pictures or videos my treo700p, it takes forever to load between images and my camera isn't as fast as it once was? i was told to get some sort of TCCMP file! does anyone know where i can find that?

man I wish there was a mobile browser that didn't suck for non-wap pages and didn't crash every 3 minutes. I'm posting wodering if moving apps to an SD card

Posted by: johndoe2k4

clauretano,

I actually did write the entire post in one shot in Blazer without restarting it once. Blazer isn't the best browser in the world but it works ok if you don't have any flash animations or too many graphics on a non wap web page.

If your Treo is crashing a lot, follow my tutorial for customizing it. That helped a lot for me. It didn't prevent crashes entirely but they became a lot less frequent.

Just wanna remind everyone that a guy named mmastrac over at treocentral.com developed this program for all the treo650 users out there. He and quite a few forum members over there really helped make this something pretty easy to do, and it really can extend the life of your treo. I've kept mine for much longer than I ever thought because of them. If you have a chance, go to treocentral and give them a thanks if you like the program. mmastrac is also the owner of the grack site. you can thank him there too. No connections to him, just want to make sure his hard work is recognized as well...

No connections to him, just want to make sure his hard work is recognized as well...

I would thank him -- has anyone found a way to clean up the rom on the 700p???

All those who have problems in ROMTool recognizing your 650, make sure that the SD card is OUT of the slot and in SECURITY, your PASSWORD is set to UNASSIGNED.

ROMTool will not connect if the SD card is inserted or if you have a password assigned to your phone.

Moreover, search TreoCentral.com , and there you will find drivers for the SDHC cards. Also put them in your Custom ROM and then your Treo 650 will also be able to use SDHC cards.
