ORB on CU500 issues

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Greetings,
After reading that people were able to get the CU500 to stream ORB to their phone I was sold. I went to the cingy dealer today to go try it out. Using the 3g service, i was able to get to the login screen and attempt to login. After logging in it asked me if I wanted to "Redirect" which I did, then it displayed "Unsupported content" for about half a second, disappeared, then went beck to the login page. I am in Houston, i was using the CU500 at the cingy store with 3g connected. For those that use ORB with this phone, what procedures did you use to make it work? Thanks guys, I am looking forward to getting this phone, only if i can make this work.

yea i wouldnt mind knowing either, i may get this phone... is it very easy to stream music??

Posted by: cjmedina

its pretty easy with orb.
first the browser has a weak java script so it wont get passed the speed test. you have to the enter url manualy. (this can be found it the tools sections on your desk top orb) go to cingulars send text page then copy and paste the url send it your phone, open the message and it will go to the link bookmark that page and thats about it. the next time you go back it should by pass the test. (if you clear your cookies you have to do it again)

with streaming music its easy just click the link and it opens up the media player. some mp3 links work and some rma links work(cingular used real player )

Thanks for the quick reply CJ, I will go up and try it again tomorrow.

Do you have a tv tuner working with ORB? I also checked out Cingular Video, is there a way to make it full screen? (landscape), as well as make ORB video fullscreen?

Thanks,
B-Rock

any thing thats streaming cant be seen in full screen, but you can full screen off the memory card no i dont have a turner just a bunch of 3gp movies

I stream tv and change channels through my home pc using Orb and my CU500.
Did't have to do it the cut and paste url way either. Just used browser to go to my.orb and it did the speed test.

Main thing is make sure 3gp is checked in your home pc setup.

Posted by: aaadock

also using orb and the cu500 .. works fine and i do use the tuner to change channels...

Posted by: asianinvasion8

Also, I never got it working with Opera Mini. I had to use the browser on the phone.

i have 3gp set as my favorite on my pc, but im still getting the unsupported content error message. how can i fix this?

Here is what I did. I logged into orb.com on my computer and set 3gp. Then I logged into orb.com on my phone, and then had to select 3gp on that as well. Try that and let me know. For some reason when I logged into it on my phone it still had windows media selected.

my phone wont even get that far. its giving me the error right after i login

Posted by: Tin Star

Here is a work around that will get you in. Login to your my.orb on a pc. Go to tools set speed to 300 and check remember speed. Log out. Login on LG it should by pass speed test. Once loged on. Do the same go to tools make sure 3gp is checked and set speed and check remember it.

Let me know if that works for you.

The service from orb is absolutely free. The phone can use it, but make sure you have the unlimited media net plan through cingular though... I saw some package that is $30 for 1000 text msgs, unlimited data and unlimited cingy video. all mp3's, wma's, dixv, xvid, .vob (dvd files), .ts (HD transport stream files), the list of compatibility goes on and on. Your home computer rescales and compresses the files into a stream in real time to your mobile device. Its not just for yourcell phone, but for your work computer (if you can get away with that), your PDA, laptop and so forth. I hooked up my tv tuner card last night, and once i get past my firewall issues, I should be able to watch ANY cable channel on the phone, live. Not those crummy little clips that you get from cingy video. Cant wait.

Posted by: crusader33x

how are the overall quality of the files? do mp3's sound good still? and how about movies? i was also browsing the website but am still a bit confused as how i get it to start working on the phone, if you could dumb it down for me please, thanks!!

These are the steps to get orb to work if you are having that problem. I have a CU320 and i had to do this... after you log in, you can run a speed test in the tools area to get it back to normal speed. This logs you in at 30kbps which should most likely work for you.

1) You can by-pass the speed detection all together by hard-coding a speed when you login to your Orb account:

- either use a speed parameter in the URL, like this for 30 Kbps for instance:
http://my.orb.com/orb/index.jsp?speed=30

Unsupported content has a variety of different meanings. Yesterday when i had it, Nortons worm detector and firewall saw ORB as an intrusion and blocked it. You can tell, because it will always display "connecting" and will never begin buffering.

On a related note, if you are using the CU500 on a 3g network... change the 30 to something like 200 or 300 as the bandwidth is much larger and allows for higher quality.

On a completely different note, I can see the TV now, but the audio will not come through? get this, the audio plays on my desktop without the video, and the video on the phone without the audio. did i miss something in the setup?

Go to the site, d/l the software to your home computer. At some point in time it will ask you to create a login and password. At another point in time, it will ask you to point it toward the directories or folders you would like to access your media from. Make sure your firewall allows all instances of orb.exe and orb.com.

Now on your phone browse to "my.orb.com", enter you login and password. If it says "unsupported content" that means it did not pass the "speed test" and your new url with bypassing the speed test should be something like "http://my.orb.com/orb/index.jsp?speed=30" subsituting 30 with whatever bandwidth you phone can handle. I believe orb will detect that the CU500 can only play mp3's and .3gp video files, and format all video and audio on your computer in real time to stream to your phone.

Run your line out to your line in on your home computer and it should fix it. This particular issue has been discussed on the ORB support forums.

www.orb.com/codecs

d/l FFDShow

This program allows you to reincode most divx, xvid, avi's and so forth into a streamable format. Orb uses it when necessary, all you have to do is install it.

like my speaker out to my line-in? cause the line out of my "MYHD" card is internal, and goes to an internal connector on the motherboard.

is it slow streaming on the edge network? cause i finally got it to work and when i try to stream an mp3 it goes to music screen and says buffering but then times out after like 2 min of staying at 0%.

How did you get it to get past the "unsupported content" error? I tried typing in the URL with the speed=300 and still got the error. This was while attempting to play an mp3.

Posted by: austen0316

i typed in the url with the speed of 300 and it got past the unsupported content error, now i can't play anything. anyone know the problem

My video's and mp3's are now streaming fine after I checked off 3gp under Tools. However, when I attempt to play AAC (m4a or m4p) files the player stays at 0% buffering screen for a minute until it craps out. I guess I need to download a codec to get those to work.

Posted by: Bob Bob

The link says to:

Note: 3GP phones should also have High Quality selected in order to support AAC streams (very good audio quality)

Did you try that?

Posted by: composmentis

Has anybody noticed that this service stopped working on their CU500? I was able to stream for a while and it has since stopped working. It now sits at Buffering(0%). I'm curious if Cingular somehow stopped video streaming outside of CV.

Posted by: Tin Star

Sadly, I'm seeing the same thing. I haven't had time to see if I can find a work around.

Posted by: Bob Bob

Still works for me, in the Seattle area

Posted by: Tin Star

Mine worked great in the DFW area but now I am outside the 3g area and only have edge. I will not be back in Dallas for two more weeks to see if it still is working there. That is the only thing that has changed on my end.

Posted by: skidpalace

I am also timing out at 0% when attempting to view internet TV.
I read in another hofo thread that it is a violation of the unlimited Media Net plans' Terms of Service to stream video.
Perhaps they are blocking the streams.

Well if that's the case I'll be cancelling my MediaNet Max once I get my rebate card. What a load of crap to limit how we use the unlimited mnet to only CV. Most of the CV content is abrubtly cut-off clips so I use Orb to actually watch full episodes of shows. Will media providers ever "get it" when it comes to this kind of thing?!

if thats the case why does cingular sell/promote mobitv. there has to be a way around it if it is just being blocked

Posted by: LEDfoot

I don't use orb, but I can still stream contents from my own server with no problems.
(I use Apple's Darwing Streaming Server to stream 3gp video clips works awesome, I love open source).

Posted by: JDyn84

If its any consolation, I had issues with all the Cingular 3G phones that I tried to stream with Orb. The CU320 that I tested instore, the ZX-10, and my own CU500. Orb is just cranky trying to work with these phones I guess. I live in an Edge only area (UMTS is 30 miles north), but streaming from zoovision and from somafm works fine. *shrug*

Posted by: kastonie

do any of you guys ever try to use the special url when trying to get orb to work? I have cingular and 3g services. I live in houston and i've gotten it to work on a cu500 and a cu320. It works great. You have to use
http://my.orb.com/orb/index.jsp?speed=300
(300 meaning the kbps. If you are on edge try a smaller number. I have noticed some problems when i am using orb on edge.)
And don't forget to go into tools and changed the media type to 3g high and only that. If you dont change that setting it will try to stream real player or windows media to your phone and of course the cu320 and cu500 does not support that.

Posted by: kastonie

I have noticed if I'm on edge i cant get any video streaming to work. But when im on 3g everything works perfectly.

That is probably my problem then. It was working fine while I was in Dallas and I didn't try it again until recently on edge and it wasn't working. I'll have to wait until I get back to DFW to see if that is the case.

Posted by: rock99rock

thank GOODNESS. I hope that is the case. I was gonna sign up for unlimited tomorrow but i guess I will see how this turns out.

Wirelessly posted (LG-CU500 Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

I am in Phoenix airport and getting a 3G signal. Orb is working great. Cingular must be blocking streaming over Edge.

Posted by: shortyd999

So all i have to do is go into tool on orb.com and set it to 3gp and everything should work??

Posted by: shortyd999

Wirelessly posted (LG-CU500 Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

Ok, so i changed the settings and it still doesnt get pass the buffering. What am I doing wrong?

Posted by: composmentis

Are you in a 3G area? I'm assuming you are if you're still trying to stream Orb. Have you done the Orb stream test? test.orb.com

If that test doesn't work then streaming isn't working on your phone for some reason.

Posted by: shortyd999

Im not in a 3G area. Maybe thats the problem?

I am thinking of getting a CU500, so I asked my colleague who has one if I could check his out. My Motorola HT820 Bluetooth headphones paired just fine. The music player and the headphones both sounded great......however

I launched the Cingular Video service and played a news clip. Even though I was still using the Bluetooth headphones, the sound began to play through the phone’s speakers. I spent about 5 minutes trying to find a setting that would make Cingular Video and other streaming video play through Bluetooth, but never found anything.

Does anyone know if this is possible? I switch from music stored on my memory card to video streams via the internet frequently throughout the day. Aside from the impracticality of having to carry around both a pair of wired and wireless headphones, I just refuse to go back to a wired headset of any kind period. If someone has figured this out, I would very much like to know.

Thanks

Posted by: rock99rock

yea, i read that it is not possible to receive a stream, then pass it through the stereo bluetooth headphones... I believe there is a restriction in the hardware somewhere.
