MPT + V3i without SIM card?

I updated my MPT software so that it can work with a new unbranded V3i I purchased here. It doesn't have a SIM card yet as I will be installing my wife's card into it when I get home.

I was trying to access the V3i's internal settings... out of curiosity more than anything else. Unfortunately, MPT doesn't recognize the phone (it finds the USB MODEM though).

Question 1: Should I be able to use MPT to access the V3i even f it doesn't have a SIM card inserted? (I can't now)

Question 2: I am using a stock USB cable with the proper connectors to connect my V3i to my laptop. Does the V3i require a "special" USB cable? (Using my T-Mobile MDA USB cable).

i think the v3 needs a Motorola_Software_Update_01.03.00_Production a drivertool and a mtpfix to work properly with MPT.
