Dialup internet on 650

Hello,
I've recently purchased a Treo 650, and I've been having difficulty connecting via dialup internet. I have BT reverse DUN working at home, but I'd like a connection while I'm on the road.
I'm in the south, and I am trying to use BellSouth's dialup they hand out as a backup with DSL accounts. Sadly the only information I can ever find is specific to Roadrunner.
The number I'm using is a modem, I've called it directly on the phone, it will connect, and it buzzes in my ear like a modem should.
I am using the "Virtual Modem" Connection, tho I have tried Standard modem and making various custom ones with numerous init strings
Fallback: none, Timeout: 2 min
IP and DNS are auto
I've tried 3 scripts: none,
"CR, UserID, CR, CR, Pass, CR, End",
and the long RR specific one that includes "aolnet/ent." and "PPP" in there.
all to the same effect.
Upon hitting connect the phone will say it's connecting and just cancel the operation. The log says only "Not connected".
Has anyone gotten a bellsouth dialup number to work? Or failing that, does anyone have any ideas?
Right now I'm hunting through my spare parts closet looking for my old USRobotics modem.

further testing:
I was able to finally find my modem, and I can connect to it fine from my computer - leading me to wonder what's going on.
Anyone have cingular and get dialup internet working on a 650?

i don't think you can use regular dial up numbers as what you have been trying to do, but i could be wrong. try these settings:
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Phone Number: *99***1#
i had cingular service with the medianet plan and it worked on my system.

That's the data plan method if I'm not mistaken - the method I'm shooting for is using only my airtime minutes.

Update
I have since had a friend of mine (who is able to make this work on his Verizon phone) input his info into my phone, and it gets the same response - leading me to finally conclude that the functionality is blocked by cingular.
So the new question then is whether it is possible to put an unlocked GSM phone's ROM into a cingular-locked phone to fix this.
