hey all
im new to this forum
and i know practically nothing about phones.. haha

i live in canada (vancouver) and i want to purchase toshiba's 904T in hongkong
i was wondering if i could use take it to canada and use it there

please provide as much detail as possible
thanks in advance

Posted by: Junglizt1210

Yes, providing it's unlocked. (just put any SIM or USIM (not RUIM cards though) into the phone that isn't a Japanese Vodafone one and it should load up fine)

Check you have adequate 1900MHz coverage in your area in Canada. - As far as I know, there are several guys in Vancouver on this forum using 1900MHz-only phones so you should in theory be fine.

See my thread here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=942106 for more information on the phone, also, there are some other useful threads in this subforum (Other Manufacturers) regarding the Toshibas , or if you are interested in other Japanese phones too and phones in Japan, check out the Sharp subforum also.

Get yourself a memory card too. I would recommend a minimum of 512MB, 1GB if possible. 2GB are the biggest cards around, and although not supported by Sharp handsets, they work fine in the Toshibas.

Also, I purchased mine in Hong Kong in Sin Tat Centre in Mong Kok. It's water goods though, if that is an issue to you.

HTH,
Dan

904T works great for both fido and rogers.

Posted by: mobile_noob

thanks for ur replies
i got myself one in wan chai
and im currently using it with a new world card
so wen i go to vancouver, will i need to unlock it again?

sweet, im with rogers.. so can i just plug in the sim card and use?

Posted by: Squall828

Yes you can, but I am not sure if all the functions are unlocked. I have heard people have trouble using GPRS on their 904T. By the way, how much did you buy it for? I am looking for a new phone in Hong Kong too.

Posted by: asmok

You don't need to unlock your phone again when you come back to Canada. Just plug in the sim card and the way you go. You should be able to get roaming signal when you put the rogers sim card in the phone in hk.

GPRS works fine with Rogers and Fido, but I don't think you can receive MMS proberly as with most japanese phones.

Posted by: Junglizt1210

Yea the roaming icon appears...... If you can use a New World SIM in it , it means it's unlocked. Also, I don't think buying phones in Wan Chai is cheap.... lol. Certianly I worked there for 2 months and the phones could be found a little cheaper (about 100-400 HKD cheaper) in Mong Kok. Having said that, there are also very few phone stores in Wan Chai that sell phones..... I can think of a few off the top of my head, theres several in the Wan Chai Computer Centre, and theres also some at street level around that area outside it... but they aren't exactly speciailist phone stores, jsut catering for the foreigners I suspect...

i got mine for 2160, there was a store that offered 2080 but it only came in silver.. i got red
also, i went to sham sui po, but not many stores have it... the ones that do offer like 2600 or 3000

btw, waht's GPRS?

Posted by: Junglizt1210

GPRS is the thing you need for data. It's a technology and you use it to access the web etc.

uh oh... i transfered some songs using the beat engine program
the songs are successfully shown on the phone but it says that it cant play the file. also, (transfering by usb) i clicked "yes" to transfer music and then the screen displays "communicating..." however, it doesnt stop. and wen i remove the cable, it says like not successfully transfered or sumthing like that (i think it actually says "cancelled")
so did i do something wrong? whats wrong? is there sumthing wrong with the phone?

edit: haha, nvm.. i got it, it was cuz of the phone number setting thing
do u guys find this phone quiet? and doesnt vibrate enough? like if ur on a busy street (say causewaybay or mong kok) can u hear ur phone ring if its in ur pocket?

Posted by: mobile_noob

omg.. i thot i got the song transfer thing, but for some songs, i still cant play ><

Posted by: panerai7

You gotta make sure the bit rate is 192 or less and the number under tool>settings in beatengine is identical to the one in phone's menu>phonebook>mydetails. And you should be fine.

Yeah the vibrate is kinda low, but i love the fact that it vibrates to the sound

Posted by: mobile_noob

ok.. so if the bit rate is OVER 192, what can i do? how do i make bit rate smaller?

Posted by: asmok

Use iTunes to convert it to 192kps AAC

Posted by: panerai7

I use soundforge. open your mp3, click save as and choose bit rate 192. you're done

Posted by: mobile_noob

u can transfer AAC to the phone and it works?

so do u guys find the phone quiet?

Posted by: Larrikin

Yes it is pretty quiet. I expected a much louder sound out of this supposed surround sound experience. Even with headphones in the the sound is still pretty quiet

Posted by: mobile_noob

here i have a few more questions...
1) what settings do u use for the camera (for best quality)?
2) wahts IC-appli? V-appli?
3) what is CAST in the entertainment section?
4) how to delete recordings?
5) how to use the number memo?

umm, i think 5 questions for now, post some more later ^^
thanks in advance

Posted by: panerai7

1. fine, intense color, everything else default - but don't expect miracles, not a 903sh camera, no matter what settings you choose

2. ic-appli, v-appli, v-cast: all Vodafone Japan services, don't worry about them, can't use them

3. what do you mean delete recordings, highlight, options, delete...

4. select number memo, and it will show the last few times you punched in any numbers while in call. by the way, i don't like it - reveals your voicemail password that you typed to get your voicemail.

Hope this helps and you're welcome to ask more ?

P.S. My phone is plenty loud if using beatengine upload

Posted by: mobile_noob

thankz for ur reply!

for the camera, where do u get intense color and whats flicker aadjustment under screen settings?

as for recordings.. i go tools > voice recorder > recordings
when i highlight the file and click options, i only get
1. Play
2. Memory Card
3. Sort by >
4. Details

whers delete?

and what do u mean by
"P.S. My phone is plenty loud if using beatengine upload"

Posted by: mobile_noob

btw u guys say for ringtones, use WSD
so after converting.. how to transfer?
same as songs?
using beatengine with usb cable and transfer music files?

Posted by: yangj08

If you use ringtones, you don't use Beat Engine. You should still do as if you were doing beat engine upload (choose "music transfer") but instead copy your ringtones directly to the phone's "Sounds and Ringtones" folder (Under Private->Vodafone->My Items, I think). Oh- while V-cast and IC-appli are Japan-only services, V-appli just means Java games, so you can download normal Java games to the phone (with memory card or WAP) and they'll show up under V-appli.

Posted by: asmok

Or you can just put the memory card into your computer and copy it over to (drive):\PRIVATE\VODAFONE\My Items\Sounds & Ringtones.

Posted by: panerai7

I meant when I use beatengine, the ringtones are very loud or at least as loud as i heard them on other phones, however d600 is insane - it screams (sorry out of topic)

Posted by: mobile_noob

hwo do u transfer ringtones through beatengine?
i drag them onto the folders whcih comes out to be not realli loud..

Posted by: yangj08

Songs transferred through beat engine can't be used as ringtones. Only MMF and MIDI files can be used as ringtones (have you tried raising the ringing volume to the maximum level?).

how can u transfer ringtones (mmf) through beatengine?

and yeah, i tried raising to max lvl... its only lvl5 and still really quiet!

Posted by: lifeintheeast

will this work with t-mobile in the us?

Posted by: yangj08

Yes, if unlocked. Oh- and like I said before, ringtones can not be transferred through beat engine.

Posted by: mobile_noob

but panerai said he did it...

Posted by: yangj08

I'd love to know how- if panerai can enlighten everyone here as to how he set a song transferred with Beat Engine as a ringtone, I'd like to try the same thing.

i am sorry, was typing late at night. Beatengine i meant was for transferring music and it is pretty loud, louder than 903sh. WSD was for smaf/mmf ringtones and they're also very loud.

i was just trying to make a point that the phone plays loud music/ringtones. again sorry for misleading

Posted by: mobile_noob

so ringtones converted through WSD comes out just as loud?
great, i shall try.. but WSD onli converts music from wav
i have mp3 file songs

Posted by: panerai7

first you have to convert mp3>wav with another software, like i think MediaPlayer will, i use soundforge8 myself, but i think MP will work, then you open that wav file with WSD, make sure MA-5 is selected, edit>sample type... and so on. make sure you keep checked "convert to mono" or it won't work.

Posted by: mobile_noob

i think in the 904 review thread, ppl say that u can pick ma7
damn, it has to be converted to mono?
doesnt that make the sound worse?

Posted by: yangj08

Mono doesn't really make the sound any worse- I certainly can't tell. Also- MA7 ringtones are bigger because it uses audio quality that's closer to the original WAV, so you'll only be able to get in like 10-15 seconds with MA7.

Posted by: mobile_noob

wen u say bigger, u mean the filesize?
how about the sound?

Posted by: yangj08

The sound is supposed to sound just like an mp3- but the *filesize* is bigger for the same amount of music. 30 seconds (it still has to be mono) turns out to be 298KB in MA5 while it's about 650KB in MA7. For reference, the filesize limit is 300KB.

Posted by: mobile_noob

btw, can this phone play music videos?
if so, how?

Posted by: yangj08

This phone can play music videos, but they have to be uploaded in 3GP format. Toshiba's version has a .3g2 extension, and has to be converted with a 3GP converter.

Posted by: mobile_noob

do u transfer through beatengine?
which 3GP converter is recommended?
so say i have a movie or sumthing, i can convert to 3gp format and watch on my phone too?

how can i convert using windows media player?

Posted by: panerai7

NOOB>> do you read the answers to your own questions? and i feel like the level of questions is going down hill, next question - "how do i turn on the computer?"

just kidding

Posted by: mobile_noob

ya, i am noob... read my name
so how about answer the ques?

Posted by: panerai7

Ok, how about reading the manual for the phone, most answers are actually there. Full English manual can be read here http://www.vodafone.jp/english/prod...4T_e_manual.pdf
Enjoy

Posted by: mobile_noob

uh oh... my internal camera seems f'ed up
its all fuzy and everything looks red-ish...
any1 know how to solve this?
is it cuz i dropped it too many times? ><

Posted by: mobile_noob

hmm, sometimes its fine
but sometimes i still have that red color problem thing...
does this happen to anyone else?

Posted by: yangj08

I wouldn't know- maybe try to make sure you haven't turned on any picture effects. If that fails, then take it in for repair. For example, the shop I bought it at apparently has some insider connections somewhere in Japan because I get the full warranty period for free repair even though my phone is gray-market. It even covers things like water damage. Of course, not all shops do this (insider connections are hard to get, I presume) so your mileage may vary.

Posted by: mobile_noob

yea.. well i bought the phone in hk and they have like 1 yr warrenty i think..
but im in vancouver

oh yeah, and its only sometimes that its like that... sometimes, its fine ><

Posted by: mobile_noob

so has any1 had this problem?
umm, anyone drop it say more than 5 times and have no prob?

Posted by: panerai7

Try moving the phone around so the internal camera can adjust to the surroundings, btw do you even have a 3g service that you can use video calling with where you are, because otherwise that camera (internal) is useless

Posted by: mobile_noob

what do u mean by moving it around + adjust to surroundings?

another problem... i dont know why i can't zoom anymore... is ther an option?

Posted by: yangj08

My camera gets like that sometimes when I take it from darkness to bright light, or the other way around. It has to adjust its exposure (and maybe some other things too) when conditions suddenly change. That may be why it only happens sometimes. Also, I don't think that it can zoom- it uses digital zoom so it won't work in full resolution (it should work in lower resolutions like 2MP or 1.3MP mode, though).
EDIT- Only now did I notice that you said that it was fuzzy. Have you checked the macro switch(above the camera lens)?

the guy lives in Vancouver and NA 3G isn't compatible with the rest of the world.

None really. All the shops are more or less the same, if you want trustworthy, best bet is to buy from a proper retailer like Fortress or Broadway rather than the small shops in Sin Tat... but then neither sell imports, water goods or greymarket goods. All the shops in Sin Tat are more of less the same to be honest, my best advice is to ask around for the price, and then ask about warranty. NEVER ask if the phone is locked (there are some models that can't be unlocked... and you should know these off by heart before you go there) because if you do, they will charge you more because they know you are stupid. And when you're stupid, they will charge you for unlocking it (I'm speaking from experience here....). In Hong Kong, most likely, if a phone can be unlocked, then it WILL be unlocked, sure there are a few cases where this isn't the case, but as a general rule of thumb, if it's sold, then assume you can use it in Hong Kong (and elsewhere). If you don't want to ask if you can use it or if it's unlocked, you can always ask to try the handset with your own SIM/USIM card.... most likely, they will be happy to let you do that if they have enough stock (so they don't have to open a new box).

Posted by: Junglizt1210

oh yea, and sometimes, they will reply, oh but the box is sealed and i don't want to break the seal - just go elsewhere if they say this. Best to try out a phone before you buy, right?

I just ordered a 904t and have Just a Couple of Questions

1. What are the GpRS settings for Rogers in Toronto.
2.Can I load programs onto the phone such Opra browser and such
3. How does the Silver Version of this phone look in your hand

Posted by: chinpokomonics

Thanks for the advice. Will be in HK next week, gonna look for replacement for my 803T (I really miss this phone,), may get the same model again, still doing my homework. Don't think anywhere else will sell 803T but Sin Tat, even SV dont have this one anymore.

Thanks again!

1) not sure. I don't use Rogers.
2) Yes, I have done so. browse to http://mini.opera.com on the browser and download there (it should say it's not supported, but it still works)
3) No idea, I have the red one.

There is an upgrade to the 803T (Japanese version) -it's the 705T. There are HK versions I think it's called TX60 for 803T and TX62 for the 705T but not sure. Smartone-Vodafone carry the updated version.

Posted by: Jmask5

Thanks man but lets say the program is a .jar file then can I get that to work. And if anyone knows the answer to the rogers question that would be helpful. I think we should make a stick with 904t questions like these it would be helpful for everyone. Anyway the TX62 is not an upgrade to TX60 the camera for example is only 1.3 megapixels on the TX62. Maybe there are some other things that are improved but still the 803t looks much better in the Looks department. Stick with it.

I made an "official 904T" thread (see my signature) but obviously someone decided to get detracted and create this thread. it's inferior to mine rofl j/k
