Qtek 8500 / Cingular 3125

What differences, if any, will there be between buying a Qtek 8500 or waiting for Cingular to release the 3125?

Are there any bugs in the 8500 that are expected to be fixed in the 3125 or are those just software issues that can be updated once Cingular release the 3125?

How do you go about updated the software once the Cingular phone is released?

Thanks,
Brian

I like the idea of being able to use Cingular's warranty exchange rather than sending it off to Imate/QTek/HTC... That is enough of a reason for me...

I agree with you 100%. I had purchased a Qtek 8500 when they first came out and very quickly found out about the deep sleep / missed calls issue. Luckily I was able to return it as I only used it for one day. I don't like doing things that may potentially void the warranty, so for me updating the ROM is not an option.

If you buy a 3125 then you can do the warranty exchange thing with Cingular. If you are like me, that don't have the patience / time to try to program the Cingular settings into the phone, then the 3125 will be a better option as everything should work right out of the box.

Any idea when the Cingular 3125 will be released? There seems to be multiple dates floating out there.

I wish I knew! I am dying to get my hands on one. I guess the initial reports of an August 8th launch were premature. Some here in HoFo who seem to be in the "know" claim that the earliest we could see the 3125 would be sometime on September. Apparently the headset is still on field testing and assuming there are no problems, it could be released in September.

I called around my local stores at the beginning of the week and based on the responses I got the September estimate makes sense. Let's just hope that it is September as in first week...and not September as in "early October"...

I agree. I have been waiting for a phone like this to come out for a long time now. I cant wait to get my hands on one

Have any of you actually used the cingular exchange warranty service? I'd way rather use HTC's warranty service of which is in a different country, and I've never owned an HTC phone until now...

I can recommend that if you ever have to use Cingular's warranty exchange DO NOT send back your old phone immediately, especially if it still can make calls but there's just something wrong with it. I received 4 refurbished razr's before I finally had one that worked properly. I'd rather pony up another $400 for a brand new phone than deal with their outsourced warranty line. I literally wasted a total of 12 hours of my life fighting with them to get me a phone that worked, of which I can never ever get back.

Regarding deciding which to buy, the 8500 I can buy it now phone, or the Cingular version which no one really knows when it's going to be released. The pro's of the 8500 is that you can get it now, and there is a band-aid fix to the only real major bug that I've seen reported. The bug is a nasty one, as it misses calls and doesn't report voicemail waiting once the phone falls into deep sleep. There's a program (freeware I think) called stay connected that keeps the phone from falling asleep, and for me personally, it has totally resolved the miss call issue. The phone is too new for me to know if this actually has a negative effect on battery life. I personally plan to pay the 40 bucks to unlock the phone so I can load the Cingular rom and try it when it comes out. The other pro, more of a personal one for me is that I have minimal reasons to deal with Cingular's help lines.

The missed call issue appears to only be a problem in the US, and that very well could be the reason for the delayed release of the Cingular hardware. If I was HTC I'd be much more concerned about fixing the Cingular device before I worried about the 8500, considering the sales from Cingular will likely be 10,000% more than the Americans who want the new toys now. With that in mind I'd expect the Cingular hardware to come out before a US 8500 fix.

So it really boils down to patience... do you want the new toy now? Or can you wait?

Btw, if anyone in the norcal area needs a backdoor line to cingular message me and I'll give it to you. Not sure if I'm allowed to post a non-published number. It used to be an AT&T backdoor that's still active...

I just got a message from a friend of mine who works in the engineering and testing department of Cingular that the 3125 has been dropped from Cingualr's line up. It didn't pass the test as far as Cingular was concerned.
I trust my friend so take it for what it is worth.. I hope he is wrong because I would have liked it as a backup phone to my 8125.

This better not be true.

There is no reason why this phone would not pass Cingular's testing, but the crappy MPx220 did.

You are an idiot....

No offense...

But your friend should be smacked... What is his name? I will fly where ever he is and do it... The phone hasn't been dropped. The phone hasn't really even been delayed much... People just anticipate an earlier release than was every suggested much like the MPx220 and 8125. I believe I was saying this when both of those phones came out also... Blah blah blah. I'm over it. I'll get it when it comes.

No sense on calling him an idiot. That's acctually rude.

But I like the idea of doing something to his friend. If we shoot him, he will never be able to comfirm whether this is true or not, so we can go on with our lifes just like yesterday.

Now if his statement turns out to be true...
