Alright so I got my 2 year upgrade today and the stupid cingular website won't allow me to view what my options are because it claims there aren't any cingular stores in my area.

I want a new phone that I don't have to pay alot of money for and thats nice.

As of now, I have been looking at the LG CU500 and Samsung's D807.

This is what I'm looking in for a phone...
1. plays custom mp3s for a ringtone.
2. decent camera (this isn't that important cause I already own a 7mp digi cam)

I really like the razor from what I have seen, but everyone and their mother owns one so I would like something different. the LGCU500 seems like a nice choice, but I don't have 3g or unlimited data package etc etc, and I don't really care to have it either, so would this phone be worthless for me?
The other option would be the D807 but from what I read, you can't use you're own mp3's as ringtones?

There must be a Cingular store somewhere near you, unless you live in the middle of nowhere. If you can't find one on the website, maybe call CS to find out where the nearest one is, that way you can see the phones in person.

I have the LG CU500 and my Samsung D807 is set to arrive today. I could probably provide a basic comparison between the two later today, if you like, and answer any questions you have. I hope.

Khadgar346,

first, to answer your question about MP3s as ringtones, yes you can do this on the D807. I think the only limitation is you can't use (like the LG) MP3s as ringers for message alerts. For me, this isn't an issue, but I know it is for quite a few folks, so I would understand if it were a dealbreaker for you.

I find the call quality thus far on the D807 to be quite good. Loud and clear. Quite a few Samsungs I've used in the past have had some sort of background noise issue, like hissing or buzzing. The best Samsung I've used in this regard actually was the C207. On the test call to my work VM, there was a bit of buzzing, but it seems like just about every phone does this on that call. I had a 10 minute conversation this morning on the D807 and was pleased. I haven't tested it yet in a loud environment. The LG does alright in noisy places. I need someone to call me here at the office, aka the metal fortress of doom, in order to determine how good the audio and reception really is since this is definitely a fringe area.

I like the screen quite a bit. The T9 on the texting is my only complaint at this point. I am having some trouble understanding how to flip through word options and as the seller didn't send me a manual, I haven't had an answer readily available. I will download the manual tonight. The keys on the top portion of the slider are a bit stiff, IMO, but I've used much worse and I suppose when you have such a small phone, you have to make flat keys. Heh.

I love the blue backlight of the D807's keypad. It's a bit cramped for me, but I had a w600i and found that a bit cramped initially, but adjusted in a few days.

I like that the microSD slot on the D807 is easily accessible, you know, hot swappable. On the LG it's tucked up under the battery, which can be a bit incovenient. Of course, it's nice that both phones use the same removable media. Makes for an easier comparison.

This Samsung UI reminds me a bit of the SE UI from two years ago. Quite a few nested menus...it takes quite a few steps to do things, it seems, although I'm discovering there are shortcuts around this, so that's good. It seems like it takes fewer steps to accomplish something on the LG. And yet, it's still the familiar Samsung UI.

Bluetooth is great on both, at least as far as pairing and transferring files. I was amazed with the speed of moving ringers and my phonebook from the LG to the Samsung.

I was surprised by how quick the Samsung loaded up MediaNet. I'd say almost as fast in EDGE as the LG. Which is pretty impressive because the LG gets online quickly, even in 2.5G.

I've not yet taken many photos with the Samsung. I think the LG takes pretty good snaps for a cameraphone, of course, given enough light. I will try and take pics with both tonight for comparison's sake and load them up on photobucket.

OK, that's a good start. I can't comment on battery life yet on the D807. I'm getting two-three days on a single charge with the LG. I would expect about the same from the Samsung.

well I bought the D807 today. Thanks quil for the compairing the two.

I'm really enjoying the samsung alot, I still need to add my mp3's and wallpapers etc but from what I have played with I'm happy.

This is a phone I def have to take care of tho... I can tell the screen can get scartched so easily. Thats not good for a drunken college student like myself hah

The whole thing can get pretty scuffed up. My used ebay D807 though "used for just a few months" shows the wear. Don't put it in your pocket it if you can help it. And definitely get screen protectors for it, whatever brand you prefer.
