E61 vs. Treo 650

Boy, the E61 looks nice. But can I achieve this functionality?

- Seven (doesn't list the E61; which model is same?)
- Chatter (for an IMAP server)
- Directory Assist
- Flight Status
- mVoiceMail (to listen to .WAV attachments)
- PDANet (for use as a modem)

well the treo doesnt have wifi~

Hi,

Having both a Nokia E61 and a Treo 650 here is what I consider the good and bad things:

Good Things About The E61

As mentioned before the E61 has WI-FI which is a nice.

A metal case and keys as opposed to plastic on the Treo.

The E61 has a internal antenna and is thinner then the Treo.

Better sound quality.

Bad Things

No touch screen

The volume keys and joystick are plastic and the joystick seems to be on the loose and mushy side.

Firmware updates are only officially available through Nokia service Centres. If you buy the phone where no service centre is available or the phone is not officially sold you will be out of luck. There are ways posted on how to flash the phone yourself but getting the latest firmware can be a pain, and you run the risk of turning your phone into a brick.

A lot of people have had problems setting up VOIP, although this has been reported as fixed in the latest firmware by some people.

A Limited amount of software available, old S60 software will not work.

A Lower resolution screen.

iys sad that s60 wont get a touchscreen anytime soon, else they'll OWN!

Nice post. I guess I could easily live with those bad things if I could get Treo functionality out of the E61 with apps that did the above.

I forgot to mention that the BlackBerry Connect software didn't come
pre-installed on my E61 but I managed to get a copy off the web by doing a search. The reason I mention it is if you go to Nokia's Business Solutions site they ask for your cell provider name and phone model, then when you select the file it will ask for your location, email etc. I don't know if Nokia checks to see where your IP address is coming from. I have seen certain sites do this and say that the content is not available in your area, such as streaming video sites.

I don't understand why Nokia is so anal when it comes to stuff like firmware updates and so on. Having owned SE phones and being able to flash my phone using their update service was great, much better then having to go somewhere to have it flashed.

you will be able to get nokia fw upgrades eventually..thru nokia updates. I hope they are doing it like SE thou and not forcing u to update it thru wap (althou having wifi on the phone helps )

EDIT: just found it...

I've had both, and they are both nice phones. The only drawback for the e61 is the lack of software out there now, but that will change. You can pretty much run anything on a treo though, but like said above it doesn't have wifi and the e61 is the best qwerty keyboard I've ever used.

Cool! If you had to pick 1, which would you pick?

On the E61/E62, do you have:
- push email
- connect to laptop as modem
- listen to .WAV attachments

I just got an E61 to try out and it's a great phone! The major, major drawback for me is there is no camera I like to snap pictures here and there and being an SE loyalist I feel deprived

i think it is nokia's counter to the m600i/w950...they dont have cameras as well, BUT the e61 has wifi

Posted by: outsider

Yeah its definetly quite a similar device to the m600, but that whole key sharing keyboard (and no wifi/camera) of the m600 doesnt do it for me. Guess SE didnt want the m600 to get close to the top of the line p990.

I see the similarities to the w950 aswell, but I would place the w950 as just an advanced music phone rather than the pda/phone bit of the e61/m600

i would rather get n91...4 gb hd AND wifi

Hi

Apperently the Nokia update checks what SIM your using before updating and if the provider is not approved it will not update. This means for someone like me in North America where the phone is not offically sold by Nokia the update service will be useless.

i think it checks the serial # of the phone to determine which region the phone is before it updates. Alot of ppl updated their n70 and its not a NA phone. So i think u should be fine~

I'm on T-mobile, and I updated mine just fine through the updater.

I don't know about Chatter, but Seven is supposed to work. Nokia has a download for the Seven client on their site. The phone supports Push email through Intellisync, Blackberry Connect, and a ton of other BES-type servers (including Seven). You CAN tether it and use it as a modem, both over bluetooth and with the cable. I do it with mine.

WiFi rocks, and the built in SIP client works great with my Asterisk server. I can have my home phone number anywhere in the world with Wifi, and make calls back to the US for free.

I had a Treo for 2 days and returned it. It sucks compared to the E61.

Do you happen to have the address for the Nokia site? I've looked, but can't find links for the Push e-mail options.

In terms of the firmware update for the E61, I tried doing it and it said that there's no update for my phone, even though I know there is. I don't know what it is, SIM (I'm with Fido in Canada), serial number, location, etc etc. Regardless, it's frustrating.

Couldn't help but notice that no one really answered your questions. Everything you've asked about the E61's capabilities are possible. Push email, modem for a laptop, opening .wav attachments, flight status (Worldmate), and it'll probably cook you breakfast too if you treat her right.
