Anyway to use web w/ Minutes -not- GPRS?

OK, so this might be mega-n00bie turf here, but what the heck. I just got my P800 from BreezyJR here. (By the way: Transaction went completely incredibly smoothly - do business with this fellow if you can!!)

I'm on AT&T WS. I haven't signed up for GPRS (M-Mode), but from searching the AT&T forum, it looks like 3 Cents / KB. I think. Could be. 2 Cents with the $2.99 plan, and on and on.

I read the T-Mobile thread, and to be honest, ignored it (since I don't have T-Mo), and since my phone seems to be connected auto-magically! I was able to surf to my own home server quite seamlessly, so I figure there's nothing left to do, right??

Only thing is, is there any way, any speed, to use the P800 itself to dial a number and use the cell-phone minutes that I already have? What about WAP? There's gotta be some way I can burn up my extra minutes with this thing, right???

Understand, this is coming from someone who's longed to use his cell phone as a modem in the past, but I've never had one capable of it, so I've got no experience or knowledge either!

I'm sure to share my experiences in the next week or so, but so far, so good.

PS: Anyone else get incredibly slow sync speeds with Outlook in XP? I downloaded the latest software, but MAN! it's slow (compared to the slug R380 software even!)

@plympton

Why not ask BreezyJR to provide you wtih tech support in setting up a CSD connection for your p800 Gee, if only you would have purchased the P800 from me instead, I would have been more than willing to walk you thru it myself.

First of all, in order to use your cell phone minutes for web connectivity, you need to connect to the web via CSD (circuit switched data) which is like a dial-up connection on your cell phone. Im not certain if AT&T supports CSD since I do not have AT&T. Contact AT&T to inquire on CSD.

If AT&T supports CSD, you may use your PC's dial-up ISP account settings on your P800 to connect to the web. Your P800 will dial-up to your ISP, connect to your ISP, and you will be billed per minute.

Yeah, but he had the developer kit that I was drooling over. :-).

Anyway, that kinda explains why I can't connect right now - I set up my dial-up connection (verified that the phone number was correct), and had the phone dial the connection, but no-go. It said that it couldn't connect.

The next trick, of course, will be to connect the laptop up via minutes via the phone.

After that, it'll be laptop to phone via bluetooth, but I'm not holding my breath!

I also had a Metrowerks developers kit pre-commercial P800 and CSD worked well on it. When establishing a CSD connection, make sure the speed is set to 9.6 kbps Analog.

AT&T does not have CSD lines....so your SOL as far as using minutes out of your plan. Simple as that...

I know your pain, I too have been waiting forever for this to happen, but if it did, it would definately stir a big uproar in accounting when all them minutes without limits customers dropped their data plans for csd.
