GPS, anything with a SirfStarIII chipset, just depends on your needs (physical size, vs battery life, vs GPS mouse capable if you need that). The Holux GPSlim236 is very good, as well as the GlobalSat BT338 and BT359. I just bought the BT359 and love it, much smaller than the BT338 and still has around 15hrs of battery life. Holux also has a new unit out that's about the size of a USB flash drive, but I believe battery life is short (< 10 hours). Not too many reviews of it yet and it is probably still a 'pre-order' item.

Software, depends on who you ask and if you need EU or US/NorthAmerica. In the US, navteq map based products seem to get the best reviews for accuracy, as well as Copilot (their own maps).

I just bought iGuidance V3 to use on my laptop (you also get a PPC version in the bundle) and I'm very happy w/ it, but since I don't have a PPC or PPC Phone and do not plan on buying one, I will probably opt for Copilot Smartphone soon.

In the US, options for Navteq based products are iGuidance, Mapopolis, Destinator, Route66, and maybe some other players I'm forgetting. You can read a ton on these at pocketgpsworld.com and gpspassion.com.
