Motorola L6 (No connectivity?!?!)

Hi, I just received my phone today in the mail from eBay. When I bought it, the seller specifically said that it was already "unlocked" and all I had to do was take my sim card out of my old phone and plugged it into the L6 and that was it. But when I started it up, I can't get it to connect to my network.
The question I have for you guys is how can I check to see if this phone is really unlocked? And if it’s unlocked why is it not connecting to my network and how can I CHECK?

It might not be set to the correct band for your carrier. Go to the network settings and do and automatic network search. The band selection should be in the network options as well. I don't know if they have this setting or its all done when you hit auto search.
