This phone is driving me crazy.... Need an answer if you have one...

I just bought a v710 (Alltel) phone from ebay. I am currently using Verizon wireless for my service. My phone is working great except I really want to update the software/firmware to the newest version. I called alltel and they will not touch the phone because I am not using their service. I called verizon, but they will not touch the phone because it is an alltel phone.

What do I need and how do I update the phone myself. I don't want to do anything to the phone except want an alltel store would do to update it.

Please help..and make it as simple as possible. Thank you.

Last question... will the new firmware let me do bluetooth file transfer?
S/W version: 8700_01.40.4P current?

Nope, V710 bluetooth is only limited to headset and a few others features. No OBEX for file transferring.

But the V710 can be seem edited to do File Transfers via Bluetooth using Moto Phone Tools (aka MPT)... as MPT makes use of "modem like commands" rather than Bluetooth OBEX File Transfer profile.

The alltel v710 firmware does NOT need the seem edits, as Alltel did NOT disable this feature on the phone like Verizon did...

rlrhk,
You're not going to have much luck... in the CDMA world, we are limited... we can't easily exchange firmwares, back them up, etc...

In the GSM world, they have the tools which make it possible to backup the flash/flex from a known working phone into a file that can be used to flash another phone... They even have the ability to add hacks and fixes into that backed up firmware calling it a "Monster Pack." In the CDMA world, we don't have those same kinds of tools... and those that exist, do NOT currently work to backup the flash into something we can use.

Currently in the CDMA world, the only way for us to get firmware files, is for a copy to be LEAKED to us.. The "Leaked" firmwares are files that are basically "stolen" by a Motorola or wireless carrier employee, who then posts the file on the internet for us... So we can't always count on this ever happening, nor can we have any expectations that a particular firmware will actually get leaked, or when it will be leaked.

And so far, those leaks are only the "flash" not the "flex"... because of the missing "flex" some essential parts of the file system are missing... so going from one carrier's firmware to another's does not always work properly.
