w810i Ringtones?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: strangemusic

hello!

It seems as if half the sound files defaulted on my w810i are not usable as ringtones, nor are any of the mp3, m4a, etc... files I upload or drag-and-drop to the phone. The manual doesn't seem to address this.

What gives?

Posted by: strangemusic

nevermind, i got the DRM packager.... ARGH thats annoying.

Posted by: nmayooran

Hey how is the DRM packager.. did tht worked for u .. like the file with a .dm extension worked for u as a ringtone ? ..

Posted by: Hitman187

Posted by: nmayooran

Posted by: p51d007

Wierd......I've got an unlocked 810i, and any mp3 file I send to it works
perfectly. Is the DRM problem only with "locked" or "branded" phones?

Posted by: strangemusic

yeah, I think it's a thing with Rogers Wireless...

Posted by: Hitman187

The reason why we can't set an MP3 file as a ringtune is this. I found out cuz i e-mail sony ericsson company, this is what they wrote back

"Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.
A recent change has occurred with mp3 and game restrictions on phones sold through Rogers Wireless and Fido Mobility. These changes restrict the ability to use MP3 music as ringtones and some games will allow the user to reach the first few levels and then ask the customer to download the remaining levels at a cost to their Rogers account. These restrictions are imbedded into the phone and CANNOT be changed in the software either manually or through a Software Update.

This change is not specific ONLY to Sony Ericsson phones, but to every brand of phone that Rogers and Fido sells commencing July 2006.

As part of Sony Ericsson's commitment to excellent customer service, we offer a wide variety of mobile products to suit your lifestyle. If you require more information, or have any other questions, please visit our website at h**p://www.sonyericsson.com or call us at 1-866-766-9374."

What A Bunch Of B.S.

Posted by: XxCanada

Posted by: Logi7

unbrand you phone

Posted by: XxCanada

how would i unbrand a phone that is right now locked with rogers that is blocking me out from using the ringtones

Posted by: pkjr703

does the software to unlock the phone to have mp3 as ring tones work for a mac?

Posted by: ryju

Seriously if you just follow the instructions in that link up top you can get it to work. The software, the DRM software, is available for Mac and PC and I just used it on my Mac to create a .dm file from an mp3 file. I had to change the delivery method to "forward-lock" from "combined delivery." Then I sent the dm file to my phone and it works!

This is on a Sony w810i

Posted by: sdt8391krt

I also had the same problem with not being able to set my mp3's as my ringtones on my cinguler locked w810. I figured out that the problem is with the size of the file, you have to reduce the file size on your computer and maybe only use about 30 seconds of the original mp3 then save and send to phone. I have already used 3 different mp3's as ringtones now. And if you are still having trouble you can always download onto your computer one of those mp3 to ringtone converters just to make the process easier. Hope this helps!

Posted by: dream5hift

whats the max length i can use?

Posted by: sdt8391krt

The max lenght is around 30 secs. or about 220kb for your ringtone. It maybe a little more but this is the largest I have tried so far. I have already set 4 MP3's as my ringtones.

Posted by: xtremesniper

I just got off the phone with both Rogers and Sony regarding not being able to set PREINSTALLED m4a files as ringtones. Rogers had no idea why m4as are being being able to be ringtones, so they forwarded me to Sony Ericsson. Sony told me that as long as the m4as are DRM protected, the phone won't play them. So whatever, all in all this is ******** and I'm going to get my phone unbranded soon.

This is my question. I downloaded the DRM software and updated all the settings in the program. I'm assuming the date that is set is the amount of time to the file is valid to use. Is that correct? Well, anyway it created the dm file on my computer, but once I transfered it onto my phone it wouldn't work. I used the usb cable that came from the phone and drag and dropped the dm file into the ringtones folder under sounds. Is that the correct way to transfer the file or do I need to tranfer it another way. The phone would still not let me use the dm file as a ringtone.

Posted by: xtremesniper

For my w810i I use Combined Delivery with a start time a day before I made the .dm file and until 2009. I change the address thing at the top to something stupid like "Random-site@anything.com" and then I make it and it works fine for now. Experiment. Some people have better luck with forward-lock, others combined delivery.

Posted by: customxspunjah

Shoot i tried every combination ever and it still wont play. do you absolutely HAVE to shorten the lenght of the song to make it usable? Is there anyone that has used a full song for a ringtone?

Posted by: jeffrohurt

Hey. I've been able to put on 30 second ringtones at about 400kb using the DRM packager. One mistake someone made was putting them in the ringtone folder. Don't. There is a folder for audio, I think, which has the ringtune folder in it. Just put it there, not in the ringtone folder itself. They also have to be on the phone itself, not the card or they won't work. I've put on some beauties . All my lady friends just adore them

Posted by: customxspunjah

how did u shorten the songs to 30 seconds? is there a progarm i can use?

Posted by: lookalikeJIN

i have the same problem...

Posted by: Phone Diva

You all should really unbrand your phones. I have unlocked/unbranded and didn't have to load any DRM onto it!

Is this a Canadian provider thing only though? I didn't even have to do that on Cingular.

Posted by: lookalikeJIN

thanks... i found the DRM thingy...

Posted by: vadek2

Ok, to get ringtones to work on the ericsson:

Shorten the file to about 10-30 seconds (Is us MP3Trim)

Run it through the Sony DRM Packager (Just put your email, set the start date to the day before and set to never expire)

Drag and drop it into the ringtones folder.

If all your having problems with is the ringtones, you should not unbrand/unlock the phone as this will then make it unsupported by your wireless carrier. (Meaning if something else happens, they will give any settings that might be needed and send you to sony)

Posted by: beret9987

lol. I was one of those people that had issues with ringtones and in general the flash menus that I didnt have so I de-branded my phone. I'm actually looking for a firmware flash for the cingular stuff just in case i need it.

Posted by: customxspunjah

you can actually do that?
go from unbranded back to cingular?

I can use generic mp3s cut down for ringers stored in sunds as my ringers just got mine today already love it :-D

Posted by: SunnyGi

You guys are awesome!!!!!! I thought I was going to have to unbrand my phone from Rogers to get my mp3 ringtones to work!!!!! This method is quick and easy!!! Thanks soooooo much!!! I'm pumped!

Posted by: RBlade

did you accually get this to work? my phone has blocked all mp3 files including the factory rings and the new ones i download from the rogers mall

Posted by: SunnyGi

Yeah It worked for me. I thought I was going to have to unlock the phone but it works!!! Download that sony DMR packager program, install it. And then open an mp3 file that you have already shortened to a small file size. I used "combined" and my own email address and used a start date of yesterday and no end date. It converts it to a .dm file. I uploaded it to the ringtunes folder ON THE PHONE not on the memory stick. Make sure you are uploadind the .dm file and not the .mp3 file. It doesn't alter the mp3 it creates a new file. Should work. I'm with rogers and it worked for me!

Posted by: aliencds

i just gave my dad my samsung d807 and got the w810i.

do i need to do this for the cingular sony?

does unbranding the phone kill your 1 year warranty?

Posted by: iampaul70ca

I guess this is just one of the surprises that the folks at Rogers forget to tell you when you buy a new phone. lol. I was actually directed to this site from one of the techs at Rogers. Let's hope that the DMR packager works for me.

does anyone knows if the w810i reads the mp3 files in chinese character on the phone? mine doesn't and it is bugging. is there a program or ways to have the w810i recognize the characters. It shows up in my PC and Itunes but not on the phone. any help would be appreciated. thanks

Posted by: gusto5

the DRM packager should work absolutely fine for rogers branded phones. All i did was package the mp3 as a FULL 3 meg file, and then threw it onto the memory stick. and presto.

Chinese shows up in mine...but it's unlocked/unbranded, i'd tell you the firmware if i knew how to see it.

Posted by: hope2004

I have a sony ericsson w810i that was locked to rogers and i used the Drm packager. It worked fine for me. I thought it was a bit of a pain so I just went and got the phone unlocked and now i can apply mp3 as ringtones no problem. The only thing you have to keep in consideration is once you get your phone unlocked is your phone warranty will be void.

Posted by: AE92Truen0

i dont think the drm packager works for cingular phones, only rogers. I have cingular and have tried all combinations for the drm and they still havent work. While i keep seeing rogers people say it works for them.

anyways, i think its too much of a hassle to flash/unbrand my phone, so i just went with the cutting method. At least for my phone I found that any length works...as long as its under 600kb. i had a file at 609kb...didnt work. Cut it till 599 kb and it worked so yea, just my 2 cents

WOW, this worked very well..the only problem u have to do it shorten the files...MPTrim works perfectly for that... thanks man

hm this isnt working for me. can anyone help?

Posted by: t0nee

alright i figured it out but this is pretty lame. the limit for a file size is 600kb and u can set it as a ringtone. if it is bigger than that u can't set it .

Posted by: biggy-T

dose any one have an easy way to use the mp3 as ringtones. the DRM Packager is not workin for me.

Posted by: t0nee

look at one post above you. is there any other way of doing this without having the 600kb limit ?

Posted by: biggy-T

do you know what program to use to make mp3 smaller

i have a song that is like 300 KB and it dont work

Posted by: saivior

Okay, if you want to use a full song as a ring tone or not deal with anything else - Debrand it!
If you have cingular, the file size has to be under 600kb, only (no drm).
If you have rogers, you must use the drm packager, and have it under 600kb.

Posted by: cjben

i figured it out!!!! finally. I relized that you can record audio using sound recorder in the games section on your phone and use them as ringtunes, so I checked it out and found it used AMR format. so I converted an mp3 to an AMR and boom, I have a sweet ringtune!

Thank U! Thank U! Works perfect on my cingular phone. Didn't have to debrand or anything!

Posted by: JasonAttard

Ok DRM Packager worked simple enough for me.
Using version 1.35, on a Rogers branded W810i.

1. Start DRM.

2. Go to options, config, set DRM method to combined. You can set where the DM files are saved too.

3. Hit add, choose your files.

4. Go to options, rights. In the rights section, go to play tab, and make sure enable rights is checked. I didnt set anything else. Hit OK

5.Hit Create DRM content. Should work.

Then just a matter of transferring to your phone.
