want a PDA/Smart phone...not happy with cingular's offerings

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

hey all. i am in the market for a PDA/smart phone and there's nothing that cingular offers that interests me. i don't like the Palm OS, don't care for RIM since they don't have a camera, and i'd like to have a phone with Windoze Mobile 5. i've seen a few phones from t-mobile that interest me (and are quad-band), but i'm scared to buy.

i know i'd have to buy unlocked.

so, let's say i buy one and pop in my SIM card and get all my settings configured (where can i do that anyhow?)...what kind of charges will i be looking at when using the internet? will i need to get a plan from cingular? will the pay-per-kb charges kill me if i don't?

i'm very happy with my SE W600, but i am wanting a phone with internet access. any news of a SE PDA/smart phone on the market anytime soon?

ANY help on this topic would be much appreciated. thanks!

Wirelessly posted (whatever the next lines says: HTC-8100/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

first off the w600 has internet acess. class 10 edge, if you wanna view full web pages why not try out opera mini. its a free java app. plus you will only pay 20 dollars a month for unlimted data. if you bought a pda you would have to buy a pda plan wich is about 40 a month. sonyericsson does have a pda phone the p990 i think thats the write numbers. but if you want a windows pda take a look at the tytn (hermes) or may the the star trek

Posted by: callisto9

hmmm. mini opera you say? might have to check that out. yeah, i do know about the SE P990, but it's not for me. too big/ugly.

so, the cheapest internet/data plan for a smart phone (unlimited) is $40?!?!? that blows. but it's $20 (unlimited) for WAP on my phone?

Posted by: JeffreyCentex

Smartphone Connect is $19.99
PDA Connect is $39.99 (or about that much)

For instance, if you get the Cingular 2125 or the upcoming StarTrek phone, then you can use the smartphone connect plan.

For the 8125, you are SUPPOSED to get the PDA Connect plan at $39.99. Many are using just a plain MediaNet or Smartphone Connect plan, though....

alright, now i am getting confused. what's the diff between a PDAphone and smartphone? if i were to get an HP phone, would it be a smartphone or a PDAphone? and which data plan would i have to get?

and what the HECK is the star trek phone? sounds awful.

i guess maybe i should just opera mini and get the $20 media net plan, eh? that might suit my needs. my SE W600 just does about everything else.

The HP 6xxx and the Cingular 8125 are PDA Phones (Windows Mobile 5 - PDA Edition)

The Cingular 2125 and HTC StarTrek (WM5 flip phone - 3125, I believe - see one of the sticky threads on this forum for more information) are running Windows Mobile 5 - Smartphone Edition).

The easiest way to tell - if it has a touchscreen, then it is supposed to be on the PDA plan.

Ever considered a Symbian phone? The Nokia e62 should be coming out in the next couple months...the 6682 is a great phone, and cross my fingers the Nokia E70 might be out too.

He said he wanted a camera so the e62 is out for him...the 6682 is a good phone, but the amount of problems I've had with it doesn't want me to recommend it to another person if they aren't a technophile. The E70 seems like the better bet thus far.

(E70) Here's hoping for an North American Version soon!
plus flip out keyboard goodness!

The 6682 is a wonderful phone.... I havnt had problems yet (I also keep the phone in prestine condition and it sits in a krusell case) I'm looking at the HTC Hermes/TyTn/8525, the Nokia e62, and the outdated cingular 8125.

thanks for all the help and advice. i've looked at the nokia 6682 numerous times, but i don't know. might have to have a 2nd look. i am just not impressed with cingular's phones and i don't want to go the overseas/unlocked route - i am fairly technie, but frankly, i just don't want to mess with an unbranded phone right now.

i think i'll load up the W600 with some games and opera mini to hold me off for a few more months.

Maybe she just prefers multimedia. Or maybe more choices in manufacturers. Even with HTC's empire, there are still other choices for Windows Mobile devices. How many manufacturers make BlackBerries? Perhaps as many choices as those who make Nextel iDen phones.

you all know i'm female, right?

my dream would be for my W600 to have a bigger screen and...wait, maybe that's all i am after. i wish SE would make a less-ugly PDA phone. or a smart phone. with quad band. and a camera. and a toaster.

Sorta? Brother don't hold back, missing camera and ESPECIALLY WiFI, it's worse than a 6682 in my opinion!

you know it! my giveaway is that i list my BF's phone in the top of my posts. but yeah, i know this forums is teaming with men. you can smell the testosterone a mile away.

i am very intrigued by the nokia 6682, but if i remember correctly, there was something that turned me away from it. i think it was something that someone told me about the OS. hmmm. i'd like to get one to mess around with...but unless your, oh, say, engadget, you don't just get cellphones to mess around with and test out.

when i think about it, my SE W600 has everything i need, really. i have NO complaints about the phone, for my purposes. i'd just like a bigger screen, which is maybe why i was looking at the PDA market. well, that any maybe a QWERTY keyboard.

let's face it, yes, i'm a girl and i get bored with my cellphone every 10 mos.

just look online. there are bunch of them SE p1000(symbian),Moto Q, HTC tytn, mio 701 and eten 500-600 series(with gps sirf starIII), hp 6900 series just too many to mention all. it is up to you what you want to use it. My opinion HTC tytn and mio 701 are the best ppc on the market but its just mine opinion, decision is yours. Good luck, Marek
