lg vx5200 data cable problem

I recently bought a data cable from ebay and downloaded the software that came with it and then I downloaded bitpim. when I go to find phone it is unable to find it so I add the phone info in the settings. then when I go to the recieve and send data part the following pops up " LG-VX5200 on COM5 : The phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew." I have tried several different COM ports and the same message keeps coming up. Anyone ever had this problem before or does anyone know how to fix this so I can start downloading ringtones and wallpaper fron my computer? Thanks for your input in advance.
