"Format failed" for transflash on V170

I have 2 v710s. My first transflash was a 128M chip, and it formatted fine, and the description reports the memory accurately and the type as TRANS. I acquired a 512M chip. Both phones report it as type TRI, and zero memory. Attempts to format in either phone result in nothing but "format failed, try again". I do not have an SD adapter card to format in my PC, and neither chip has been formatted in a PC. Is there another way to format, or prove that the 512M chip is bad, other than testing in PC with adapter?

I dont know if there is any other way to test it.

I have purchased an adapter, and will test TF card in PC. I think both Motorola and SanDisk must use computers to respond to questions submitted to them, as I asked specifically what the "format failed" error message means, and what the TYPE characteristic means, and got the same canned response telling me to format card as per manual, etc. So I guess they don't know what is going on either.
