It is official! I found out today that T-Mobile will be releasing the 8705 in addition to the 8100. The 8705 will be identical to the 8700g with the addition of a camera. The 8705 will not have a MP3 player or removable memory. This phone will be available in retail outlets on September 18th. As you all know the 8100 will be available on September 12th. Mark my word, this is my first post and everything in it is 100%.

Thanks for posting. I just called my local T-mobile store and NO ONE in the store knew anything about a new BB coming in. SO if you are 100% positive I think I'm going to return the MDA I bought and buy a cheap phone on ebay to hold me down until the 12.

i can confirm that it will be an HAC version of the 8700g. no word on anything else

The 8705 does not have a camera, it is just hearing aid compatible (HAC). This is the only difference with the 8700.

This is stupidly retarded! How long's T-Mobile had the 8700g, 6 months? If that? They need an updated version like they need a Sidekick 4 (which is rumored to be coming out much sooner than would be appropriate)!

If anyone needs an updated 8700, it's Cingular! After all, their 8700c is rapidly approaching its first anniversary (it launched November of '05) and is weakened by its use of outdated EDGE data technology. Verizon's about to launch their THIRD 3G (EV-DO)-enabled BlackBerry, and Cingular STILL doesn't have one that works on HSDPA and/or UMTS! This is unacceptable to me, especially since Sprint has ruined Nextel! I'm ready to jump ship to another carrier, and Verizon's 8703e will be the first 3G-enabled 8700 in the States. If Cingular had a 3G 8700, they'd get my business, since at least one of the GSM 3G technologies supports simultaneous voice and data useage, which will be the most revolutionary thing to happen to mobile data networks since, well, the introduction of the BlackBerry! But without that feature, and without a 3G 8700 at all, Cingular can't effectively compete with Verizon for my business.

First thing, why do you care about 3G so much? Its only available in select markets and costs a fortune. I still haven't figured out the entire fasincation with people and 3G services. Yes you can do voice and data at the same time, but I've travelled all over the place and I've maybe seen one person use their voice and data at the same time. As for video calls, take a hint from Europe, as most people won't use Video calling as it's way toooooo Costly. As for internet speed, how much video, porn and music do you plan to download on your device? I can understand thethering, but since most 3G internet plans are well over 80 dollars a month, I'd expect that it's not worth it. And like I said above, unless your in a major market, Ie SF, LA, NY, etc, then you can kiss any 3G usage goodbye as 3G is not currently available in any of the other markets. You might as well stick with edge.

I use it for tethering.

The cost isn't that high.

Verizon sells unlimited EV-DO for $60/month
Cingular sells unlimited UMTS for $60/month

Actually, if you already have a Verizon PDA or RIM data plan, you can tether with EV-DO for an extra $15/month.

Or you can learn how to configure your PC and BlackBerry for tethering yourself, using FAQs on RIM's website and BlackBerryForums.Com, do it WITHOUT telling your carrier, and pay them NOTHING extra!!! *evil grin*

You already pay anywhere between $20-$50 a month for your BlackBerry data service (depending on who your carrier is), why should you then have to pay them an extra $60 a month for the privelege of using it as a wireless modem for your laptop? That's just them being greedy! So, just don't tell them you do it! As long as you're not stupid enough to use it to do things like constantly download huge bittorrent files, they won't be able to tell you're using the device as a modem for a PC!

As for why I want the ability to use voice and data simultaneously, I'd think that would be self-evident. Currently, when you're using the data features, it prevents you from receiving phone calls that might be important, like being online with dial-up service. But with that capability of GSM 3G, it's like having a broadband line at your house, where you can be on the phone and internet at the same time! So, if I'm at work, using the BlackBerry as a modem for a laptop, and an important call comes in, I won't miss it! That's why I'd want it!

As for being in a major market, I'm in the DC/Baltimore market, which usually is one of the markets that gets the new stuff early. We may not get it as early as LA or New York, but we typically get it fairly early.

I agree that paying an extra $60/month on top of the fee for blackberry data for tethering isn't reasonable, but...

It's an extra $15/month on VZW to be able to tether (feature: BROADBANDACCESS CONNECT UNLIM PDARIM). That's not really that bad. $30/month for the BB data plan. $15/month to be able to tether. The total of $45/month is actually cheaper than the monthly fee for an aircard.

As for unauthorized tethering, I imagine that at some usage threshold the carrier would decide there is something abnormal about your blackberry usage and either terminate service or impose some per MB charges. I'm not really interested in taking that risk for a mere $15/month, although I imagine that getting away with occasional tethering wouldn't be a problem.
