Help with Wi-Fi on 8125

I'm very new to smartphones and their wi-fi/internet workings, so please bear with me. I just bought the Cingular 8125 without a data plan. But I would like to occasionally surf the web. I'm told I can use the wi-fi function on the phone (at no charge from Cingular) to connect to the internet, if I'm located in certain hotspots. But I'm having trouble doing so.

I turn the wi-fi setting on and the phone detects a network. But when I trying going to websites like yahoo, ebay, etc in IE, I get an error message (".....page not found....").

Do I need to reconfigure settings in "Connections" or "Wireless LAN"?? If someone could please walk me through this process, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

See if this will work..

1.) "Wireless LAN"-->LEAP tab-->New
You will enter information about this wireless network such as user/pass, SSID etc..

2.) "Connections"-->Advanced tab-->New
Enter name (anything you want) for a profile and under Proxy Settings place a check mark next to "This network connects to the Internet". Don't worry about the other settings.

However, I would be more worried about #2 since the 8125 will display the SSID if unhidden and all you will need is the user/pass. Keep the profile you created selected.

A Cingular customer service rep said I needed to be on a data plan (which I am not) to connect using wi-fi. Is this true?

Thanks,

Ray

Nope. Sure isn't. Sorry they told you that, they may just not understand Wi-fi, seeing as how its not actually supported through Cingular.
