8125 Edge Connection Setup

I have set up my Edge connection on my Cingular 8125. I am having problem with speed on it. Other threds have mentioned a proxy trick or using alterative DNS.
I tried the proxy trick and it really did not help much. My qestion is that is the proxy trick just disabling it?
And are their any other settings I can modified to increase the connection speed.
