You don't have to know anything about phones to sell them. If you can read the signs that say FREE or point people to the RAZR, you are half way there. The other half of the customers will buy whatever you tell them to. Customers are like sheep so you have to be like a sheperd. How are you at controlling herds? Do you freak out easilly when people throw LG phones at you? Oh yeah - then there is the people that already know more than you do about phones and are going to buy whatever they think is best.

Can you stand around and listen to tons of complaints, dumb questions, and people who can barely function in society in the hopes that you might sell one new line? Can you do all of this while trying to add $15 worth of features on their account that they probably do not want? Can you also do all of this while a guy named Joe comes in and has a broken Analog phone and has went over his 90 days on his prepaid line and wants you too fix it all and buy a phone card? But wait - here comes Sarah with her 6102 with the busted flip demanding immediate attention because it is Cingulars fault her phone is broken. Wait, you are 'Cingular' - it is your fault! Why did you break Sarah's phone?

If you can do all of the above mentioned things, you are off to a good start. But you have to be able to deal with computer systems that do not work properly (POS, OPUS, take your pick) and always crash at the wost possible times, customer service reps who are not helpful at all, and a big box store down the road that sells everything you do for half as much. Oh, and if your store does not sell enough then it might be closed and you might have to work at that very same big box - good news is that then you wont have to actually 'know' anything.

While you are doing all of this, make sure you are 'ON' because any one of these 'sheep' could be a secret shopper and you had better get a 90 or above or you can say hello to the fry station at Burger King (thats next to the big box store)

Really, the job is about being able to multi task irritating situations, equipment, policies, and people and little to do with a knowledge of cellphones.

Hope this information helps.

There are two types of agents people should deal with. (plenty of types of just stupid ones, but really only one that cingular wants)

First is the intelligent kind that knows boatloads about the features, what each phone is capable of by memory (ie-does it have 850? can it tether? does it have bluetooth? GPRS? EDGE? Does it store SMS's on the SIM card or phone's memory? Can you customize ringtones by person or does it have to be by group? Can you change the SMS alert tone? Can it be MP3?) and can tell you how the towers work, why 850 is better than 1900, etc... BUT they'll be less willing to swallow the BS Cingular corporate wants them to and will hugely resent the SS and probably not make it very long. If you put this person on Zoloft or Prozac or something, they might last a year or so.

Second is the "smart" type that will happily eat all of Cingular's BS and ask for another spoonful while scoring 100's on the SS tests but not know diddly why a customer would be better off with the phone or service they really need.

If you're reading hofo, suspect you are the former, and too smart to put up with it for very long.

And those of you that would like to kill my dog right about now, understand I REALIZE I'm generalizing and know that there do exist a few people that can do it all, and you may be one of them.
Anyway, what was my point again? Oh yeah... The job might appear glamorous for some reason or another, especially if you're the first type and love the gadget-factor of the job, but observe long and hard what the average day is like before you jump in the water of phone sales.

Oh, by the way, the Zoloft helps with conscience problems.
