That is some fine looking unit. If only I could get a prepaid data plan that worked out cheap I'd snap one of those babys up. As far as I know to use the gps I have to be 'online' on my handset?

You only get charged for the time if you're using CSD. Switch to GPRS, problem solved.

I made this trip tracking thing when I drove to Ottawa and back. It used a Bluetooth GPS module, my MacBook, and GPRS to post the data live. Some friends and family were tracking my trip as I drove, it was pretty cool. I want to cut the MacBook out of the picture because it's just unnecessary. The problem is I can't find any decent and not expensive Java Bluetooth libraries for Eclipse for Mac. I don't know if the offerings are any better for Linux. Most of them are Windows only which is absurd and I'd rather not write the software than use Windows.

On the way there: http://mgmp.net/~mroach/gps/view.php?trip=3
The way back: http://mgmp.net/~mroach/gps/view.php?trip=4

Here's the setup in the car:
My Garmin Bluetooth module is up in the front there and my handheld is in the foreground.

My MacBook on the seat

I'm thinking that if I do this again, I may put my FireWire iSight on the dash and have my posting script take a picture and upload it with the data so that when you click on the little cars, you can see a picture of where I was.

The best solution would be if I could control the camera with Java and write a program to do the GPS position posting as well as snap a pic and upload it. Cell-GPS would be even better because then I would just need a phone.

how can se phones use this? K790?

i cant wait untill ill get my holux =)

If I only get charged for data I might mess around with this a little. Is it possible to have the phone shout directions at you like a gps navigator? I've seen a friend do this but with a symbian phone, so I'm not sure it would work on my k800i

what i dont understand is why it uses data... GPS devices never use any kind of online activity... for example, i bought my Garmin eTrex for a couple hundred dollars a few years ago. it doesnt connect to anything exept the sattelites, it doesnt connect to the internet or anything. so what would be the difference? wouldnt it be the same exept instead of having its own display (being too small), it sends the coordinates via bluetooth and fully displays a moving map on your cell on a Java based application? thats what i would think...

It needs to download maps from the net. Since the maps isnt stored on the memorycard

uh... well they come on SD cards for certain handheld GPS devices. why cant we do that for MSPD to have on our phones? or better yet store the maps ON the phone. dont they have Google Maps for phones? im sure this can be done somehow...

I got the Holux GPSlim 236. It's a TAD bit bigger than this one, but that's ONLY because the battery is bigger. It's exactly the same hardware wise, but the one on this thread has a smaller battery, hence it is smaller. I prefer the GPSlim 236 cause I can use my old nokia 6680's batteries

There are GPS navigation softwares for phones that come with maps to load on the memory card or on the phone, but you got to BUY those.

The free navigation applications dont offer maps to save on memory. They require constant GPRS connection to load the maps. There is no way around that, and you cant save Google maps on memory... unless you take a screenshot, but then it's only a picture, and pictures suck for navigation.

With live GPRS with google map, you can zoom in and out and get a different level of details ont he map for each zoom. A picture will only get you pixels made bigger.

You can buy TomTom if you dont want to use GPRS, or Route66. The free ones require GPRS, or they suck.
