Palm Treo 650 dead?

My coworker has a Treo 650 that isn't working well at all. It seems the keypad may be shot or there is somekind of major software failure.
Basically, the phone can turn on when pushing the power (hangup) button and then asks to unlock the keypad by pushing the center button which again, works fine. But once past that, you can't navigate anywhere without using the stylus pen. And as many of you may know, it's impossible to navigate everywhere without useing the keypad at least a few times.
We've tried hard and soft resetting it and still nothing. He just got the pda which is a hand-me-down from our boss so could he have accidently turned something off which disabled use of the key pad once the phone is on?
Is this common problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as he's kinda bumbed and really needs it working. Thanks

Does everybody understand the problem or was I too confusing or vague with my description?
If anybody has any suggestions to offer, we would greatly appreciate it. Obviously the phone is out of warrantee and we are trying to avoid going to a Cingular store but will if we have to.
Thanks again.

You would have better luck at a palm site (like palminfocenter.com or treocentral.com) than here.
If you have done a hard reset it should wipe the device to "like new" state. Look at this web page and do the "battery disconnect reset"
http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/...01,Case=obj(887)
That wipes every setting back to "out of the box" state. If the treo still misbehaves you have broken hardware.

Thanks for the info DJS TX! Unfortunately, nothing worked so I am assuming the phone is just fried.
Something weird did happen however. The "Battery Disconnect Reset" that you recommended I do was not for the 650 but was for the 600. Since the main total reset for the 650 didn't work I decided to follow the instructions for the 600 for the hell of it. The instructions called for holding down the "K" and "Backspace" Buttons while pushing the reset. It's supposed to turn the screen black and the only way to revive it would be to connect it to the charger.
Well, after I pushed K and Backspace and reset the phone, it just acted like a soft reset and after a little flikering of the screen, it went back to the phone menu. HOWEVER, I now got my keypad functions back. I could now navigate fully. BUT as soon as the power shut off again, when I turned it back on, there was no keypad use again. Now everytime I do a reset holding K and Backspace, I will regain keypad functions until the power goes out.
What's also wierd, is that I have full control with the stylus and even the keypad when it's working. So at certain times, the pda works 100% and then bam - keypad is shot.
Anymore suggestions?
Thanks again.

Take it apart and see if you can re-seat the keyboard connector.
Or buy a broken screen model on Ebay for cheap and cannabilize parts.
You've got flakey hardware. If it is out of warranty, you've got nothing to lose by taking it apart. Blow it out with compressed air and see if you can figure it out.
Or, send it to me and let me play with it
