Slow Internet Connections

So in mid-August, I noticed the connection speed was really slowing down on my 8500 (i-mate ROM). I always had an EDGE connection, but it was taking a good 45-60 seconds to locate sites just casually surfing the web and synching hotmail. I went to the south of France on vacation and the connection (still EDGE) seemd to be back to it's normal speeds. Returning to Boston, it went back to slow again. Then I went up to Vermont over this past weekend (roaming off Unicel - still had EDGE), and the speeds went up to normal again. Back home - slow again.

Has anyone elso noticed this, and is there something up with the Cingular network? When roaming all is good...WTF?

This issue exists currently with people on Cingular using WM smartphones. It may affect other phones but I'm not sure. Cingular is having DNS issues and it takes forever for PIE to "locate" the web page. Some reported success with changing the DNS settings to 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1, etc. I tried it and had no luck. I finally called Cingular and had them upgrade me to the PDA connect plan so I'd have access to isp.cingular in addition to wap.cingular. I had then credit me the difference in plans (and will do so each month until they correct the issue) and changed the APN to isp.cingular. Now, the problem is not longer present. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Nice to know it's not the phone, ROM, etc. I tried the DNS switch, but it didn't do jack either, so I might be on the phone to Cingular tomorrow for a plan change as you describe.

Note that you'll have the isp.cingular set up as well as the wap.cingular in your Connection settings if you want MMS to continue working.

im having the same issue on tmobile. For some reason my i320 and qtek 8500 are much slower than my pocket pcs (cingular 8125, tytn), its very strange. i dont understand why the smartphone os has much slower internet speeds than the pocket pc os.
