Does your Qtek 8500 do THIS?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Now that I've had my Qtek 8500 over a month, I'm fairly disappointed in it. I'm still using the original ROM, though, and am using StayConnected! to avoid the "missed call" issue.

My problems are mainly with the phone aspect of it:

1) Calls often "go silent" for several seconds to a few minutes (not a true dropped call, but neither side can hear the other). Usually it's difficult for me to even disconnect the call if I try when this occurs.

2) Sometimes I'll call my voicemail, only to find that I can't seem to tell it what I want to do (eg, 7 to archive the voicemail, 9 to delete it). I have Cingular service, BTW. After a bit, the voicemail starts asking "are you still there?" and will eventually disconnect.

I think that perhaps I live right near where a couple of cell towers overlap (is there a website to check this out? I seem to recall a website that would show a map of cell strength, at least, but can't remember the URL), and that this is causing the issue.

I never had this problem on Verizon with my Kyocera 7135 . . though there were a couple of areas where I could GUARANTEE that I'd get the phone call dropped when I drove through (near Fairfield, between Dallas and Houston, for example).

3) It seems to me that the Bluetooth is also sometimes problematic (I have the HS700 by Motorola) and causes static, etc. This could sometimes be the actual cell connection, of course.

Anybody else having these issues? If so, did going to the Imate ROM help at all?

QTek 8500 rom has all sorts of problems with Cingular service. Before I reflashed with the iMate rom, though, the sound quality problems you are discussing did NOT effect my 8500 with cingular service. Did this problem just develop or have you had it all along? Do you need a new SIM card? Is your phone under warranty and can you return and exchange for a new unit? Not guaranteeing that would work, but I haven't heard of any sound quality issues as you describe.

It's a new SIM (didn't have Cingular service before). I'm past the "free return" stage. But if I could prove it defective, it should still be under warranty, I'd hope. I think the problem was always there. But early on, it wasn't quite as aggravating as it is now.

One reason I'm afraid to flash to a new ROM is precisely because this would void my warranty. I was hoping that Qtek would have a new ROM out one day soon.

You can find the Cingular Coverage Viewer HERE .

In terms of getting static with the H700 headset, I read somewhere...maybe even here on HOFO or in Howards other site www.howardchui.com that the first batch had the static issue, mine certainly does. Maybe you have one of the first H700s with the static issue then.

Found it, it was on the following link:

Marianoz, you will find a long thread in I believe the bluetooth forum that discusses the H700 as it pertains to the serial numbers ending in A, which were the early batch vs. the B serial numbers, which came later and addressed many of the problems that existed with the early models. Unfortuanetly, when you buy one, you cannot see the number as it is on the side to the unit itself and is not visible until you carck open the wrapping.

Most of the problems with the A model were static related and they did not work very well with CDMA phones. I had two: one from my wife's CDMA Razr and one for myself that I used on an S200, Smartflip, and now a TyTN with no problems. Her's did not work well and when I exchange it with Moto, her quality improved dramtically. I was not having too many problems but did have some static. With the B model, I have had no problems and also use it on the TyTn and previsously the S200 with MS VC with the hack and can activate it via the BT unit by the single press, as it was designed. It also worked flawlessly with the i-mate smartflip.

If you have an A model and want to exchange it, call Moto on an 800 number you can get from their web site and get to the bluetooth area. You'll find a lot more detailed direction in the discussion thread I mentioned above.

I know a lot of people trash this unit, but it has performed well for me, especially after getting the B serial number model.

my qtek doesnt do that, but my h700 is staticy and i had sold a few of them to friends and they all had problems.

i would flash my phone with the imate rom. i have the smartflip rom runing on my 8500 and it works great. i love wm5 smartphones, but they do tend to act up once in a while. i had the imate rom running fine for at least one month with no problems until recently. the phone started giving me all kinds of problems for 2 straight days. i reflashed it and it works great again.
good luck

Thanks for all the great info. I just went to my car to look for my H700, and as I suspected I have a serial number ending with "A". I do get some static problems, no too bad. I always thought that the batteries were running low and would just charge it. Also, I would try to use the phone on the same side that I was wearing the handsfree. So I guess I will be calling Moto pretty soon to work and exchange.

I really my H700 as well, but the static is kind of annoying, mind you it doesn't happen all the time.

I have an 8500 flashed with the iMate rom and I still get problems 1 and 2. Sometimes the keys freeze on my phone at random. I have to reboot the phone for the keys to start working again. The quasi dropped call problem - I'm having this but it doesn't seem as if the call ever ends, I can't hear anything and neither can the other end but yet the call stays connected. I have cingular here in Philadelphia.

don't know why, but i have never had any of these issues on my qtek8500. flashed to imate for the extra space and features and have never had any issues. I wounder if there is some build quality problems with some of the earlier phones

After about two weeks of not using my phone (switched back to my semi-broken 9100) I decided to reflash my 8500 and maybe it would work. Well that seemed to be wishful thinking as it 'dropped' the first call today. I was on the phone for about a minute and then the line went dead, still registered as 'connected' but I couldn't hear anything. I'm so frustrated with this god damn phone, I'll never buy another Qtek again. This is basically a $400 paper weight.

Thanks for the info on the H700 . . but it appears that mine is of the B type.

The writing on mine shows:

06113N
H700
SYN1311B
Made in China

Sounds like not many of us are having the problem. Maybe I should just utilize my warranty and ask for an exchange.

I have non of these issues with the iMate ROM. I only ran the QTEK ROM a few hours - enough to validate the missed call problems.

The Bluetooth call quality (and stereo audio) have been good also.

I have been pretty happy with the 8500 with the iMate ROM.
