So i have an opportunity to get a tmobile pearl when it comes out.... my question is that if I get it unlocked, could I use it on cingular... I currently have a blackberry 7130c on cingular... what would I have to do to make the pearl work on cingular????

If it's unlocked there is no reason why it should NOT work, EXCEPT for the 'service books'...

Posted by: BlackBerryFinch

Yes it will work just fine. Only issue is by time someone is unlocking them it will probably be available on Cingular.

Tmo customer service will unlock 1 phone every 6 months so hopefully they will do that plus I'll be able to get it cheaper cause my buddy is signing up for new service

Posted by: aznpharm

Also wouldn't it be a matter of Cingular just sending the service books to my number?

Posted by: nyguy

a word to the wise, you need service with tmo for 3 onths before they will unlock your phone....found this out the hard....and expensive way

Yes, but, I've seen instances where for some reason it does not work. This mainly happens when a provider does NOT sell a particular device...

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but don't you need to load the carrier-specific OS on the handheld for it to work correctly? And since Cingular doesn't have the Pearl, and wouldn't have their version of the OS, wouldn't one be SOL?

Posted by: naviwilliams

Yes & No, this is where the service book part of my reply comes into play.

If the handheld is unlocked it will work. Sending the service books are a breeze.

The tester of the Pearl on the MarketWatch.com website said that she put her Cingular SIM card in the Pearl and it worked instantly (see her review of the Pearl). Could it have been a fluke because it was a test unit.... That would be too good to be true. If not, where can we get it unlocked? I know that for Nokia there is usually an easy way (no cable necessary) to unlock phones. What about for BBs? How do you go about doing so? Is there a free website that explains how to?

Carrier-specific OS is not a necessity. I use Bharti's OS for my 8700c and Vodafone's OS for my 7290 -- both are on Cingular. Both work fine. Service books are pushed to the device when it registers on the carrier's network. In some cases, service books aren't pushed out but they can be manually pushed.

Guess it's up to your willingness to take the risk... Probably the most important question is who you're buying from, and if they take returns.

Posted by: aznpharm

well it'll be from tmobile... i figure if I can't finagle it i'll just sell it on ebay??

Posted by: rubytuesday

I was just at the tmobile store and tried to put my Cingular SIM card in the Pearl and it came up invalid SIM. They are NOT unlocked so you will need to find other options. FYI.

Definitive answer: got my pearl today... Gonna unlock it.... Yes you can't unlock it through tmobile, but you can unlock it through GSM phone source but its not cheap... Ah the price of being ahead of the toy curve

I found 2 places that sell the Pearl unlocked through Froogle:

http://1electronic.com/product_info...roducts_id=4558

http://www.e-digital-electronics.co...roducts_id=4880

I haven't actually purchased from these retailers so I can't personally vouch for them...

Never underestimate supply and demand...never.

I just purchased my pearl blackberry today from t-mobile. I use cingular service and got the pearl unlocked this evening. It works great; I'm still playing around with it. One issue I did read up about is the MMS does not work properly....

Posted by: dallaslfe

who did you get it unlocked through Husef9926?

I may get mine unlocked also. For some reason I am getting very poor signal with t-mobile. It seems strange though because I didn't really have a problem with t-mobile on my sony phones and most of them were only tri band.

As far as MMS have you tried switcing the network settings to WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and CINGULAR1 ? I believe that all upper case is important.

What was the outcome of this, did you get it, does it work?

the outcome is, it works and it works flawlessly (with Cingular).

I just received my Pearl today and I imediately went to work unlocking it thanks to the guys at gsmphonesource who provided me with the unlocking code for $50.

after that, I went to my BB account and I did a manual "send books" push. three minutes later my tmobile branded Pearl was runing on my Cingular Blackberry service w/o a hitch.

Posted by: xbox360gamer

I've got to hand it to these guys, they are great. I sent off for my Pearl unlocking code around 8:00am yesterday morning. I received the code somewhere around 4:00pm that same day.

this was pretty cool because their own site says that it can take 1 to 2 days for the code to arrive. mine obviously came much quicker.

XBOX,

Thanks for the info. Please excuse my ignorance, but do the service books configure the internet settings for cingular, or did u need to do that by hand?

Everything is working? Internet/email?

go here and log in to your Cingular/Blackberry account. you'll then go to "change handheld" which is where you'll put in your Pearl's PIN and IMEI number. after that, you'll click the "service books" section and select the "send service books" icon. that will send the service books to your Pearl and you should be good to go.

xbox,
