Get white housing for w810I from http://cnn.cn/shop/sonyericsson-w81...sing-p-980.html

Posted by: getagrip15

Has anyone bought one of these? How do they look in person?

Posted by: p51d007

I haven't bought the white, but if it is the same quality of the k750i cover set, then it should be really nice. I swapped out the back cover of my 810i for the
back cover of the k750 to protect the lens. Excellent workmanship. I'm sure it was a genuine SE cover, not a knock off.

I beg to differ on that. I got the k750 back plate set and the quality isn't all that. The stamping around the chrome trim that surrounds the lense was way off. Half of it wasn't there, and whatever was there was off center and not really legible. It looks so bad that I am not even going to bother with the swap, I just put a lens cover on the camera and I am going to leave it at that. I will host pics later tonight and let you know if I get a reply back from CNN as I emailed them last night to let them know about the poor quality.

Posted by: sk88

most of their housings are of excellent quality, and they're identical to oem orignal ones, i've bough quite a few of them, will be uying the w810 white housing soon.

Posted by: glorfingal

already ordered the white 810i housing - I'll post some thoughts, findings
and piccies when it arrives (end of the week hopefully !)

From a 750i back to full white with black bits hhmmmm ........

there is not such thing as a genuine or OEM housings....sony ericsson does not make housings for ppl to change...all housing u see on there or anything are aftermarkets unless someone took it off from an original phone then its OEM.

Posted by: MrDisco1

are there any detailed instructions on doing a case swap for the 810i? when i snapped off the case and unscrewed the 2 torx screws i couldn't get the front plate off.

Posted by: glorfingal

I have to say that the white housing I've just got from cnn.cn is identical
in quality to the 750 back I had and the original black I've just taken off, in other
words excellent and as close to OEM as you're likely to get. If I had to guess I'd say
it's been made in the same plant as the originals.

Posted by: trunkzz

got mine in today

mixed and matched cause i don't wanna screw up my phone like i did with my k750

Posted by: Ben-

@seL

Oh, now that you mention it my ring stamp around my lens is kind of cut off too haha. But i doubt theres really anything they can do about it but maybe send you a new but better printed sticker? lol.

I'd say stay away from buying cases that just came out from cnn as their first batch's quality is not always their best.

hah..i gt myn yesterday and did the exact same thing, i just changed the front and back, gonna take it to a pro to change the middleplate for me..not very good with all that stuff....but the covers are of exceptional quality (neva used dat wrd b4..but i mean it!)..once i change the middle plate, i wudnt be able to tell between a factory white w810i or mny, cuz my sis has a wite one.

Posted by: glorfingal

Did an almost mix and match - I only used the buttons from my black one - I
thought they looked sharper than the silver ones !

Posted by: sk88

@ gloralfinger

that looks nice..did you do the housing swap by yourslef, and is it easy taking everything out and puttin it back 2 gether, i just changed the front and back on myn

Posted by: xmankinetic

I posted a how to take your w810i apart with pics in the main se forum look out for it.

Posted by: glorfingal

@sk88 - Did it myself ....
once you've taken 1 phone apart it's easy. The tricky part is working out how
the thing comes apart (and thanks xmankinetic for the guide), after that just be careful
and make notes (for reassembly !!)

Posted by: xmankinetic

No problem glad someone will use the guide

Posted by: hybrid.09

This phone (K700/K750, W800, W810) I found are the easiest to take apart, really fast and no worries about something going wrong.

Posted by: MaleNurse

I just changed mine to the white and it looks great. It was somewhat hard and a little frusterating but if I tried it again it would only take me 15 mins now after doing it once. The only problem I found is the buttons wont light up and I spent a lot of time checking connections. However, I believe i found the problem. On the original case theres a foam seal that covers the lcd screen and separates the light sensor, I couldnt get this off to put on the new case. The light from the lcd is probably affecting the light sensor because I put my old front plate back on which still has the seal and the lights on the buttons worked fine, also the volume was louder. The seal also probably projects sound from the speaker. Anyway cnn has the seal on their website for a buck so I just ordered one and hope it works, if not I can live without lighted buttons and slightly lower volume.

Posted by: glorfingal

@malenurse - thanks for the seal pointer :-)

Posted by: xmankinetic

are you talking about the foam inlay? mine came with that already from dennis

Posted by: MaleNurse

yup, my housing from cnn definitely didnt come with that, no problem tho, i just ordered one

Posted by: BlueToothDecay

i had just ordered the white OEM from cnn and im trynna figure out what size screwdriver to order. they have all these t#'s. Which is the one to get? the 6? and should i order the inlay aswell?

Posted by: B0000rt

My black full housing kit from CNN.CN came with a T6 torx screw driver!

Posted by: BlueToothDecay

I see... the website doesnt really explain whats coming. so i figured i had to order the t6 seperately... i ordered the white one.

Posted by: 810iRookie

my black w810i arrives tomorrow! i got it from cingular and they only had it in black... im new at all this modding stuff, so do any experts think i should do it myself?

Posted by: sk88

i had the white back and front plates on mine, i just changed it back to black and now my screen wont work, it just stays on the white screeen? , can anyone help me?, i didnt change the middleplate, just the front and back and the screen is not working...thanks

Posted by: y2bandit

Check the cables/ribbons

Posted by: phattbam

oh no the WSOD(white screen of death).. Some others just flash it and it's enough to bring it back to life. good luck

thanks for the replies.. dont know how it could be a cable or ribbon bcause i din't change the middleplate, but i'll check..its definately not WSOD, cuz the phone works i can call it, and it rings, and i can make calls (i'm so used to the controls i can do it without a screen!)..any way can anyone post a picure of what cables or ribbons i need to check, maybe i was to rough when taking the front plate off...

thanks again for the replies..i love howard forums...alot of nice and experienced phone people on here

Posted by: phattbam

I would just slowly trace back to what you removed in the process of swapping plates and checking all the ribbons. one to check is the one sitting underneath the keypad.. it's a tricky one if I remember correctly.

i never remove anything becuz i left the middlepart because i didnt want to spoil it,all i did was take the back cover and front cover off, but i thin whiles trying to pop the clip when taking the front cover off i mite have dun something..it would be very kind if anyone coud post pictures of any ribbons or cables i should check. thanks again phattbam

Posted by: glorfingal

@sk88 - the one for the screen is on the left side when you view the phone
screen and keypad facing up. It's just under the top left corner of the keypad
platform so in taking the front off you could nudge the connector slightly loose.
If you look at your phone with the cover on the connector is under the "calls"
button and joins the screen to the pcb.

I haven't got a picture of it, but there's a guide for the 750 that does.

nothing seems to be wroking its definately not WSOD, because i can call it and talkk etc..but the screen is white at all times, i checked the connectors under the keypad, but no luck..can anyone help me? thanks

Posted by: glorfingal

right the only other things could be a damaged lcd/flex or the keypad and/or it's flex
BTW this could also have become loose during a fascia swap - but it's a REAL fiddle
to get back on !!!

check your PM

Posted by: glorfingal

Right for any who need it - this is a set of pictures of my 810 during a front
disassembly ( I was changing the foam seal ) thought they could help all :-)

Posted by: sk88

thanks for evryones help, from this thread and the other, i took it to a phone shop and they've booked it in for a checkup will let everyone know what was wrong, hopefully they wont lie to me that its something worse and charge me for a new screen or something...thanks again for evryones help.

Posted by: sk88

turns out i broke the screen ribbon, and i might have to buy a new screen

Posted by: glorfingal

get one from cnn.cn - they're a snap to fit (well hopefully not !!) :-)

Posted by: sk88

i dont want to spend that much money on it, £25 for screen, £20 for fitting, i already spent £17 for housing and £8 for debranding,,,,so if i fit it that would be £70...so i think i would be best sellin it on ebay.

Posted by: glorfingal

@sk88 - £20.00 to fit !!!!!
Takes about 15 mins ..... heck I'd change it myself. The only real pain is
keeping dust off the lcd before you get the front back on.

use tape to remove all dust and fingerprints

Posted by: glorfingal

@phat - yeh, and scotchtape is the best - no sticky marks !!

Posted by: slim724

I just ordered white housing and silver K750 back from cnn, has anybody else tried the silver K750 back with the white housing combination? If so please post pics! I'm afraid it might have a little too much silver for my taste since the middle is also silver.

Posted by: phattbam

use the black middle for it? as it's like a gradient of colors

Posted by: slim724

Anybody know if the w810i white housing from Cnn.cn comes with the nylon mesh attached behind the speaker grill?

Posted by: phattbam

I'd like to know that as well. that way I dont need to remove the one from my black one..

Posted by: RCubed

Yup it does!
It just doesnt come with a foam insert.

Posted by: phattbam

foam insert? where is that found on the phone?

Posted by: gerardcon

Wirelessly posted (SonyEricssonW810i/R4EA Browser/NetFront/3.3 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

My sis is going to love these!

Posted by: slim724

Foam insert that goes between the LCD and housing, it wraps around the LCD, and earpiece speaker, absorbs shock and helps keeps dust off LCD, also heard that it helps with earpiece volume since it focuses the sound forward towards your ear. I bought one with my housing because someone posted earlier that it didn't come with it. I think it's about $1.99 at cnn.

was it necessary to order it? cant we just use the one from the original housing? I don't recall needing anything when I did the non OEM white housing swap before selling it.

Posted by: slim724

I didn't know if it was attached to the housing with glue or sticky tape and I ddin't want to chance damaging it, so I bought bought one since they are so cheap.

Posted by: phattbam

it's 1.99? for some reason I read it as 11.99.

Posted by: Rundell

Its actually only $1.00

Posted by: glorfingal

they are very easy to damage when trying to get them off the original housing (yes
I broke mine !!!)

They also block the light from the lcd getting to the light sensor and
confusing the poor little thing :-)

Posted by: slim724

So the foam inlay from cnn doesn't have a cutout for the light sensor? Also, wouldn't blocking the sensor just make the display always at 100% brightness?

Posted by: MaleNurse

The foam inlay from CNN is just like the oem foam inlay, it has all the needed cutouts. It doesnt block the sensor from all light, it separates the light coming from outside the phone from the light coming from the lcd screen. Without the inlay the sensor always picks up light from the screen and the keys will never light up even in total darkness. My white case from CNN didnt come with the inlay so i bought it separately and now everything works perfectly. Also the volume is much much louder as the seal projects the sound from the speaker to your ear.

hey guys i order my white housing from cnn.cn my question is if you choose the regular air mail $5.00 shipping is there a way to track it and do you know who is it sent with, its been 10 days and i have not recieved it, thanks in advance

Posted by: phattbam

I dont think you can track any of these. but it's usually fast within a week since I'm on the West coast of the US.

Ordered mine late night on 10/18/06, it arrived via USPS ON 10/25/06 using $5.00 shipping, so approximately 7 days H.K. to CA.

Posted by: slim724

Finally put the white housing on today, and it is of exceptional quality, fits like a glove, and the keypad feels very nice. My front faceplate did not come with foam inlay, or mesh for the earpiece, luckily I ordered the foam inlay when I ordered the housing, but I had to remove the earpiece mesh from my original housing, which wasn't that easy! Mesh WAS included on the back portion of the housing for the loudspeaker. I previously had the K750 backplate mod, and my phone was squeeky, creaky, and hollow feeling, which gave it an overall impression of a cheap phone in your hand, which prompted me to buy a K790a. After the swap, the phone is super solid, and silent! No more creaks and squeaks! And it definitely doesn't have that hollow feeling anymore! The current color scheme is, black middleplate, black circular fascia (around the camera lens) white front/backplate and keypad.

Posted by: slim724

All pics were taken with K790a

is there anyway to use a orange middle piece? if so, which model do i need to get that from?

thanks

Posted by: catson2006

I am on the verge of purchasing this kit, but I don't think it comes with the torx screwdriver? Where can I get that and other needed tools for the swap?

RadioShack carries a nice kit with every bit you could want, I think it was between $9-$15, a can of compressed air (to blow away dust) and a sharp blade is always nice to have if any trimming is needed like with the K750 backplate mod. My white housing from cnn.cn came with a 3.5 in. T6 for free!, and the tip is magnetic too! Also, be sure to buy the foam inlay ($1.00) with the housing because it may or may not come with one, and it is extremely hard to remove from the original housing without damage.

Posted by: djego

Finally got my white housing today , after 23 days of waiting for it i had to go pick it up myself at the post office, but it was worth the wait, i just changed it very easy to do thanks for the guide xmankinetic, looks very nice, just wanted to let you know

Posted by: Tehy

White W810i looks great!

Posted by: brealmp3

i'm ready for my orange middle section to get here. then i'll decide if i'm gonna do the white front and back.

Posted by: viper_09

im a noob on this site, but how do you just change the housing without changing the middle?

Posted by: phattbam

you need to remove the 4 visible screws on the back of the battery door. that would allow you to pry off the back piece. Then for the front you just need to pry that off carefully and you're set. the middle piece stays in tact unless you want to replace it.

Posted by: gaogi

I bought this housing off eBay, and was wondering if the cnn.cn housing are of better quality than this?

On the cnn.cn housing, does the light bleed through the buttons like the picture attached? Notice how the #1, 7 and * button compares to the rest of the button, these are how the button should handle the backlight. The rest of the button seem to have the paint sprayed too thin, and a lot of light just bleed through (especially the C/right soft button, which is really bad...)

If the light doesn't bleed through like this one, I may consider replacing this eBay housing with the cnn.cn ones. Thanks.

Posted by: phattbam

that does look different. can't remember if that was how my CNN one was.

Posted by: sk88

thats definately different, the cnn ones make your phone look like the proper white version, from your picture it is nt visible what colour the frame around the screen is, but its meant to be a grey/silver colour, and those keys definateky let in to much light.

Posted by: sk88

the cnn keypad lights are all equal, and look good, if its just the keypad which is troubling you y nt jus buy a keypad frm cnn

Posted by: palex2862

sorry to say but it looks like a cheap fake to me, was it from hong kong by any chance?

Posted by: gaogi

Quote:

It was purchased from eBay, and was shipped from Hong Kong. The camera button doesn't fit right, so the shutter is half pressed all the time, so the phone gets stuck in "Press * to unlock keys" and it's impossible to unlock the keypad.

I have sinced purchased a cnn.cn housing (for twice the cost!) and it fits perfect. The lights don't bleed through the keypad, and the finish on the housing feels a lot better.

Lesson learned: you get what you paid for. Buy cheap, buy twice.

Posted by: trunkzz

anyone confirm if the w800i middle piece would fit?

Posted by: RCubed

confirmed^^

Posted by: sk88

yes it would fit, i think u need to shave off sme clip tho. Theyre several post on hofo on how to fit the w800i middle case on the w810i

Posted by: dawinger

i voted black... cause it's free

Posted by: P5010

cnn is based in HK btw.
