IBM Global Services and Sony Ericsson Deliver Secure Wireless e-business Solution for the Enterprise Market
Monday February 17, 3:01 am ET
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 2003--IBM Global Services and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications today announced the companies have agreed to provide secure end-to-end solutions to the enterprise market.
Based on open standards, the solutions combine IBM's proven delivery capability and Sony Ericsson's versatile P800 smartphone and are aimed at helping enterprises securely extend their wireless e-businesses solutions to their corporate processes to improve workforce mobility.
IBM Global Services will become a preferred integrator of Sony Ericsson's new P800 smartphone, enabling them to integrate it into the mobile business solutions they deliver to corporate users. IBM and Sony Ericsson are working together to help enterprises increase the business usage of advanced mobile handsets and increase productivity in mobile work environments, such as field and sales force applications.
The applications taking advantage of the secure mobile infrastructure include:
Field Force Applications; such as viewing and selecting on a number of stored work tasks, using the integrated camera facility of the P800 to capture work task related images and linking back to finance and client information stored on corporate servers.
Sales force automation; order management, including preordering and stock control, using the improved screen facilities to view orders/items and using the mobile device to record time and travel information for a mobile sales representative.
"Sony Ericsson is very pleased to work with IBM to bring systems integration to mobile solutions projects," says Jan Wareby, Corporate Executive VP, Head of Sales and Marketing at Sony Ericsson. "Advanced Mobile handsets such as the P800 can form a powerful extension to the traditional corporate IT infrastructure and facilitate improved workforce mobility by allowing the mobile worker ready access to critical information at the point of need."
"IBM Global Services looks forward to extending its experience in designing and deploying reliable, secure and scalable enterprise wireless e-business applications through the use of the many advanced features included in Sony Ericsson's P800 smartphone," said Lars Alm, General Manager, IBM Wireless e-business Services. "By leveraging IBM's worldwide consulting and industry expertise, customers will benefit from IBM's user centric design of field force and sales force solutions that will allow them to better compete in the dynamic workplace of the future."
The Sony Ericsson P800 integrates a phone, full PDA-functionality, Internet access, camera, video and music player and communications features in one device. It runs the open operating system, Symbian OS and can be customized with corporate applications or games based on Java and C++. For memory extension, it utilizes Memory Stick Duo(TM), which makes it possible to easily back-up files as well as transfer documents, pictures and other files between the P800 and a PC. The P800 started shipping in Europe, Asia and Middle East at the end of 2002 and is currently being rolled out on further markets.
